Good tips. The rest of our friend group have gone off to do Milford and got Grab one vouchers, I definitely imparted my knowledge of the free carparking a 30 minute walk away, that walk is a really nice bush walk too.
@brettmcgirr2 жыл бұрын
Yeah thanks Shannon! There's only 12 mins from the free car park to the paid one so it didn't add much at all.

Thanks for watching, appreciate it! It’s a beauty part of New Zealand down there! Make sure you give yourself extra time for the drive too, there are a couple of nice spots to stop along the way including around the tunnel where you will probably see the kea 👍

Did Milford a few years ago, honestly can't remember if we had to pay for parking or not... but I guess there's is a lot of infrastructure that needs to be kept up. Anyway my philosophy is just pay up and enjoy... no grumbling allowed!

Haha yup! I can only imagine the cost for maintaining that road in and out of Milford! Plus there is free parking if you don’t mind the extra walk 😉

Thanks again guys for another informative video. Wish I'd seen it before I went in to Milford for the first time 18 months ago - especially about the parking! We were on a schedule, but next time I will certainly be making a more leisurely trip. You're right about the rainfall Chelsea - it's the wettest place in the country. While the rest of us like to measure rain in mm or inches, locals in South Westland are proud to measure it in metres (sometimes more than 7 in a year). Looking forward to Doubtful Sound video - it's on my list for this year.

Amazing how much rainfall they get huh! At first we were worried when we saw all the black clouds when driving in but in hindsight I think that is just Milford sound haha, gotta have rain to see those fantastic waterfalls 😀

Tip 6: If stopping at Homer Tunnel and you have roof vents, make sure they're closed. We had a bunch of people pointing at our roof to which a Kea was removing the wire mosquito gauze from the roof vent and ended up with a hole. 🤦🏻

Thanks for the informative Vlog; I'm planning a trip too. 4 adults and 2 kids (4 & 7). As a mode of transport, would you recommend a Campervan or a 4WD? Remoteness/comfort/road traction etc.

Campervan will be fine, road is sealed but is a little windy in places 😊 take your time so you can stop off and enjoy yourself along the way, lots to see on the road

@@AdventuresWithRosy Remarkably so! I've been to a 117 countries yet I repeat a New Zealand trip every year starting in the Fjordlands because there's just nothing so wonderfully natural like it. Later this year, will be trip 7 back.

Hi, does it mean that we don't need to book it online beforehand and just wait till rainy day and go without booking, the cruise ticket is always available to purchase on the spot? btw, we will be traveling on early Feb.
@Zack-yx5nl14 күн бұрын
@@hourui8858 You don't have to book your events so far in advance. Having been to NZ several times, most of the hostels have booking capabilities for you the day before and often for less than what you'd find online. If you are going in February, you shouldn't have much of a crowd issue although the crowds will be a bit more than in early March when I go. I'd watch the weather leading up to about 4 p.m. and if it shows rain in the morning, go to the Milford. I'd also suggest you drive there from Te Anau. Also, booking tickets for NZ, I'd suggest doing during their New year sale, which typically starts between January 5th and January 20th. Prices on tickets from LA to Auckland average about $800-1000 round trip on Air New Zealand. One thing to note is Air NZ economy seats are as good as business class on Delta and American if not a bit better. Flying out on a Tuesday or Wednesday will get you the best pricing.

I’m planning a 4-5 week trip to see both island in November 2025. When do you advise on booking hotels and activities? If I book in advance it doesn’t offer me flexibility if weather changes the circumstances. Should I just pay when I do that activity? Or book online? Paying at the venue offers flexibility but don’t want to miss out if no open spots. For Franz Josep hello hike will there be a high chance that I have to reschedule? Your advice is greatly appreciated!
@AdventuresWithRosy3 ай бұрын
I think definitely book your hotels, for Milford Sound there are quite a few different boat operators so you could probably book a week or so in advance, so once you get to NZ check the weather and then book your activities I reckon. I’m not sure how busy the helicopter companies are for Franz Josef but they probably won’t be super busy in November so you could book a few days out. I’d book accomodation ahead of time though just so it’s secure 😀

Sandflies - I dosed on Vegemite for a week before going to Milford Sound in the hope that they didn't bite and I had less bites than anyone else in the car. Coincidence? Who knows.

You could be onto something! 😅 when I first read your comment I thought you rubbed Vegemite into your skin! That would keep the sandflies down for sure 😂

Milford Sound (Correctly fjord) is one of the most isolated places in the world so don't have expectations of Vegas. The bus day trip from Queenstown is an absolute horror. Exhausting. Instead stay at Te Anau. We left Te Anau early like 07.00 and caught the first cruises for the day. Then take your time getting back to Te Anau. And the Te Anau caves trip is great too. Comments about the keas (birds) are all true.
@AdventuresWithRosy3 ай бұрын
Yeh I think I’d agree on the bus, I’ve not done it but it looks like a very long trip. Good idea to stay in Te Anau like you said, it’s a nice spot and it allows you to take your time going into Milford Sound
