You don't understand how much I needed to hear someone else with a similar story to mine. I came out of high school with a 4.0 unweighted after doing the IB program and was entering uni with a full ride as well. I just finished my first semester of university and I underestimated all of the courses I deemed to be "easy A's". I tried so hard but ended up with like a 2.9 and now need to raise it to a 3.3 this coming semester to keep my scholarship. Honestly, I was scared shitless before this, haven't been able to sleep for this whole winter break, and after hearing this, I finally feel like it's possible. I am an 18 year old Biology student at Georgia State University and Fall 2019 (Aug-Dec) was my first semester as a Freshman. I graduated from high school same year with a 4.73 GPA and from Dual Enrollment with a 3.88 GPA (transferred those credits). I was unprepared, i wasn't energetic, i was working, and i had to commute from home to school to work then back to home (a max of 13 hours without sleep). I wasn't as motivated to complete work and go to class every day because i was so tired, so I failed the semester with a 0.53 GPA (earned only 6 cred hrs out of 15 cred hrs). It brung my gpa down from the 3.88 that was transferred to a 3.3 gpa. And since those credits were transferred, I am classified as a Junior (🙍🏽). Words of advice...do not skip years of college using credits you have earned..only use credits you think will be most beneficial. You will miss out on a lot and if you can't handle the pace, you will be certain to fail. Also, be organized! Make a way. I have 42 more cred hrs out of 120 to fulfill and i have to take those classes again that i have failed. I have financial aid, the federal grant and Hope Scholarship. With that, you can't mess up. And the medical school i am aiming for is Emory Medical School. You have to have all the required courses, 3.5+ GPA, letters of recommendation, volunteer experience, 515+ on MCAT, great personal skills, etc. For those that want to be in the medical field, take your time and take advantage of what you are given, choose your teachers wisely, and have fun. Your brain will overload if you do not keep things in order and knowledgeable. Also, get well rested. Bless those who are struggling and want to pursue a career in the medical field. Your time will come, if you know it is for sure the right path for you.

Thanks for your video. I am a Highschool senior what year would you say I should apply for Medical school? I am also so scared of the Mcat because I didn't do well of my SAT I was around the 1000s. What major do you think will better prepare me for the Mcat?
@AaronTrillo4 жыл бұрын
Apply for medschool when you feel ready for medschool. There is not a "time" you should apply. SAT isn't the MCAT so stop worrying about that. Take the MCAT once you have taken courses in all the MCAT subjects and have had some dedicated study time. Any science major will probably help for MCAT. Biology, chemsity, biochemistry. You should still have dedicated study time specifically for the MCAT though.

Hello, I'm from Nigeria trying to get admission in the US to study medicine and a family friend is helping out and he asked what I wanted to take in pre-med which prompted my research for what pre-med was, in Nigeria it takes about 7years including residency. So when I started seeing 11years on Google in the US which included 4years of pre-med I became a little bit worried although I'm passionate about this I don't want to spend an eternity doing it... So firstly what scares me is the whole MCAT exams it's all new territory for me I really don't get it Secondly what is pre-med and how long does it really take to do medicine in the US Thirdly we don't do interviews in Nigeria so what exactly is this interview about what am I preparing for like an oral exam or they just want to know about me. I think I need your email for further assistance seeing you're relatable.thanks
@AaronTrillo4 жыл бұрын
In the US you need to have a bachelors degree to apply to medical school. You must take the pre-requisite courses to apply. Medical school will have this up on their website. The MCAT is a standardized test, you must take it, you should study hard for it etc etc. Interviews are about why you want to be a doctor and what you have to offer the medical community as a person. I have a BUNCH of vidoes on all these topics so go ahead and watch them. If you still have questions go ahead and email me kaddy! aarontrillo.yt@gmail.com

I’m in first year and I’m going through a similar situation. Only Difference is is that I’m actually studying very hard for all my courses however still not doing well. It’s because during exams, I often get anxious and choke. It makes it really hard to remember what I studied and do well. I never used to get test anxiety but I think it’s because of the huge weight and limited time for exams in uni. I feel pretty discouraged but I still wanna try and get back on track but I’m not really sure how I’m my situation. Any advice?

You need to get comfortable "testing" it sounds like. I think you should attempt to incorporate more practice questions into your study routine, quiz yourself with your friends. Ask yourselves random questions about the material. Also, ask you professors if there are any old test questions you can have access to? Or where they would recommend you get more practice questions from. Hope this helps.

I wasn’t the best high school student besides my senior year so I didn’t have any plans to go to college. I opened up my own small business and ran for public office at the age of 18 years old. But my parents and grandparents pushed me to at least start community college. Wellll, after being pushed I didn’t want to let them down so I went ahead and signed up for classes for a semester. I absolutely didn’t care at all (2017) and had a lot of personal family issues going on, so of course I failed my classes besides history. I dropped out of community college and decided to stay involved in local government and just work. Well now it’s almost 2020 and I’m 20 years old. I’ve thought long and hard about what I want out of life and I’ve always loved science and anything to do with medical and have decided to start over and give college at a university a try. I know I can do it because when I’ve put effort into any class I’ve always received an A or B, and now that I’m older I’m more disciplined. Do you think that one semester at my community college will effect my chances of even looking towards medical school later down the road, if I retook the classes I failed and improved and received decent (A-B’s perhaps one C) my next four years in my undergrad?
@AaronTrillo4 жыл бұрын
I think if you can convince admissions that you are NOW prepared for medical school then regardless of your past you can do it. You say you want to do medicine but have you actually shadowed a physician at a family office, or in the ICU. It sounds great and all but if you do not actually know what doctors do day in and out. "Thinking" of being a doctor is way different then "KNOWING." I hope this helps. If you do decide to get into this amazing field I wish you the best of luck and it is time to GRIND!

You and I are very different. I didn't get through high school in a breeze. I struggled with math all four years the most. History wasn't my strongest subject, either. My strongest was English, but biology was my favorite science class. I love to write, but I know I can't make a living off of that right out of high school, so I turned to science. I took anatomy my senior year in high school because I thought it would help me, but I honestly forgot most of everything I learned in high school in general. I decided I wanted to be a forensic pathologist at the last minute and decided that that is what I would do and I could write on the side. But, to be honest, I'm scared. If it's one thing I don't like, it's wasting time (which is ironic because that's all I do). I'm just like, what if I get into this, and find out I don't like it? What if I change my major last minute because I had hopes for the longest that I could make it? What if this path isn't for me? What if, what if, what if's all over. There are so many questions. There's also the issue with money. I don't like wasting that, either. I guess what I'm trying to say is how do I know if this is the right path for me, or should I change and try to find something else? And how would I do that? This school isn't very diverse with a lot of things, considering this is an agricultural school. I don't know. I might change my major to English, but no job that I can get interests me. Besides, I feel like I'll have to read so much, but I just like to write. I'm sorry for this long comment.. but thanks if you read it.
@AaronTrillo4 жыл бұрын
I read the whole thing. Shadowing a forensic pathologist is the only way you could know, and even then. During medical school most students change their minds. Its ok to be scared. You are still young and have sooooooooooooo much time. Stop trying to rush your life. If you dont like it then change it later. I know the uncertainty is hard but there is absolutely nothing you can do until you actually try it out. Being uncomfortable leads to so much growth. Be ok with it.
@lonnisplace14594 жыл бұрын
@@AaronTrillo Okay. Thank you for the advice. You're right. There's just so much I want to do and explore and experience before I make up my mind about anything. Aaron should not look back. Every medical student should be continually moving forward. But you need to learn how to use your time and how to learn. Rote learning is obsolete because the electronic media can help retrieve information quickly. However, you still need to go through your learning material and notes because you will need to know where you read it before and then go back to check it. Surround yourself with other devoted students and reinforce each other, cooperatively and not competitively. It is the endurance rather than the IQ that matters. Above all, enjoy yourself with the time, which is also due to the companionship around you.

However, my general chem grade from the first semester was what really destroyed my gpa, and it is already haunting me. Is it wise to retake the course and get the hopeful A to replace it, or better to focus on acing the rest of the pre reqs and leave the one glaring bad grade so I can show med school apps I’ve improved?
@AaronTrillo4 жыл бұрын
I would just focus on getting good grades from here on out Marine. If you are already doing well performing well in upper level courses will far outweigh a freshman C. Medschools weigh GPA by semester usually. 1X for freshman, 2x for sophomore, and 3x for junior and senior.

Had a pretty similar situation to you. I’m currently a Pre-Med, but my first two semesters of college were not good. Kicked it off with a 2.3, and then my second semester with a 1.8 after it was said and done. My first semester was pretty much the same problem as you, I didn’t have the right materials and strategies to study. The second semester, I had to have a surgery to remove a wisdom tooth (won’t go into much detail but it was not in a convenient spot, so they could only remove the one). That cause me to fall behind, and fail one class. Although none of these classes so far are science related, I’m reserving to take those at a four year university, as I’m in technical college at the moment planning to transfer. It’s a much more cost effective method for me lol. Not to mention a couple semesters I had to miss due to a surgery and experiencing a near death illness. Although my last semester I aced all my classes, once there wasn’t anything standing in my way. I’m not sure if medical schools like that much error in the beginning of an academic career, but I hope they see my effort and grades going forward. Thank you for the video, you gave me a lot of inspiration to pursue my passion.

I've been able to mix some hard classes with some easy classes but that won't always be the case. Thanks for this inspiring video! My first semester at college wasn’t that great and I started thinking that I will never be accepted in medical school. I’m a sophomore now and this video makes me want to work even harder. Thanks a lot!!

Raixie, you are very welcome! I took a break and am now responding to all my lost comments! I remember feeling that same way. You can do this though!
