Hi Kalia, I just wanted your viewers to know that 3 years ago, you and a number of other knife makers online inspired me to get involved and start making knives. After I watched you make the KHO hunting knife I made one of similar design for a brother as well as a number of kitchen knives for 4 other siblings all out of 1084 steel, using a filing jig. It wasn't long before I purchased a bench top grinder made by Ryobi which saved a lot of time and was much easier to use, with practice. I made a coffee can forge, which works well for small knives but I send out my larger knives to a heat treater now, an even heat oven would be great but beyond the budget at this point in time. A very good friend built a 72 x 2 inch linisher for me recently, in exchange for a series of knives, so now I will be able to make some heavier and larger gear. So keep up the great work and I hope you eventually obtain a degree of wealth you truly deserve with your knife making career. Making things with your hands is truly satisfying and a god send if someone wants to buy them.

On International Woman's Day, I salute you. Kaila, you are an example that other girls and women can look up to. Could you please do another KZbin explaining WHY you decided to be a Knife Maker?? While you are at it, tell us WHY you got into doing the KZbin series. And, finally, HOW did you get on Naked and Afraid? You are such a beautiful, strong, independent woman. Again, I salute you. Thanks.

Am really a fan from India and really am a knife addict, although its damn expensive addiction since we dont have any standard/ quality knife maker or culture in this country. Your channel really gives me a honest and great tips when I try to use really prehistoric manual tools that are available in our local hardware store to make knives out of blanks that I buy from various USA based website. Keeping giving me and others like me inspiration, and practical honest tips or tricks of the trade that none or most of the DIY videos from popular experts actually show. So kudos to you.. KEEP UP

It's a great hobby. You can make gifts for others. You can sell a few and use the money to buy more supplies and equipment. If you get bit by the bug, you can "find" more money in your budget and add to the hobby. make 1 knife. then make another just like it but use your lessons learned to make the second one better. Then do it one more time. The 3rd knife should be better than the first two and you will be on your way!!

Spring steel is a great steel to work with for beginners. The down side for spring steel are holes and usually heavily pitted rusted surfaces. For those using a forge, the pitting is no problem. For Stock removal folks it can be. good stuff!

why do people knock or trash talk railroad spike knives so much? if you case harden and temper your finished knife blank properly, a railroad spike makes a great knife that has a very hard case with a soft interior that is very tough. I have had railroad spike knives case harden to 3/32nds of an inch deep with a HRC of 67 and had to remove some of the hardness.

Another possible option is the plans for sale by USA Knifemaker. $25. The grinder is a no weld grinder (they suggest bolting everything and show how). I built 3 of them. I have a welder so I didn't use the bolts and so can't comment on how well it works. But the frame and box tubing components is as cheap as you can get. then buy your own wheels, find a motor and pulley system... anyway... it's an option and mine works great!! Ive been making blades for over 40 years, this is now my primary grinder.

Consider making your first one as a hobby. keep the first one. then make 2 more of the same knife but use what you learned on the first one to make better knives. After those first 3 you should have far more information about whether or not you think you would like a self supporting hobby (sell knives to buy more tools and materials) or begin your own business.
