"We yearn for freedom, we react vigorously when we perceive that our choices have been curtailed, and then we are paralyzed by indecision in the wake of seemingly endless possibilities because we are not choking on choice". Lex says nothing at the most brilliant and articulated philosophy of our time. And then, "Choice is a first world problem". !!!

@RADAR According to science, a happy fulfilling live is driven by long term happiness sources which are usually the same ones that gives us a sense of purpose, i.e. raising a child, creating a family, finding purpose on your job, having new experiences, etc. Not everyone wants and not everyone can "follow their dreams". Also dreams and passions are not permanent, each person can create or change their own passion. I don't want to have children, nor live the "common life", but there's no need at all to be condescending and bitter towards those who choose to raise children and have a family, or those who choose the comfortable life. Doing this only affects yourself since you're raising the expectations for your future and removing kindness from your life, which also according to science is also a source of happiness. Check out Berkeley's content on the science of happiness.

A great aim for life is to do life affirming things and work towards betterment of yourself, there isn't much more you can do. Chase something that will be worth the pain and suffering the end. The meaning of life is to live in a way that means something to you. Define your own values and virtues, and live by them.

"Do something" ok great got it. Not said with a huge amount of conviction either. Perhaps really what Sheldon wanted to say is: "Don't worry about it, because your idea of self-concept, or the effort you put into XYZ is arbitrarily defined based on hundreds of factors outside of your control" - but he knows that is damaging and a hopeless statement, one which will push you further away from your tribe (even if socially constructed) . Although, it could be argued, that REJECTION of ideas of self-concept and nihilism in that sense is the same as pursuing 'meaningful life', but more edgey. Better way to orientate your life is to have interests, and relentlessly pursue them, even if it is an 'arbitrary construct' because that is what is propelling humanity forward?

The meaning of life is simple: "Survival". Every living being needs to do this first, everything else is choice.
@alichamas63
@alichamas63 3 жыл бұрын
@@OsvaldoBayerista Yes it is. The question of the meaning of life seeks to define an objective or goal for existence. Survival is the ultimate base objective of any living being, so this definition satisfies. Your objection seems baseless.
@alichamas63
@alichamas63 3 жыл бұрын
@@OsvaldoBayerista @E R I disagree. I believe you are deconstructing too much. The definition satisfies. Thought is required for survival, simply because it manifests as an impulse does not disqualify it as an objective. It's the ultimate.
@alichamas63
@alichamas63 3 жыл бұрын
@@OsvaldoBayerista humans are animals underneath. When our lives are threatened our number one objective is survival. I think you are failing to see that because you are analysing at too high level an abstraction around thoughts and personal choices. Survival is what living creatures are meant to do. Everything else is a lovely abstraction on top. Look at the base instincts of most mammals, to procreate. This is survival. It's built into the system we inhabit with others.
@alichamas63
@alichamas63 3 жыл бұрын
@@OsvaldoBayerista my friend if we're going to talk about thought let's spell it correctly. It is "th" not "t". Regardless, you're entitled to your own definition of life's meaning. I remain happy with mine.
@alichamas63
@alichamas63 3 жыл бұрын
@@OsvaldoBayerista all good my man, I hear you. I guess what I'm ultimately saying is that there is no theological or metaphysical purpose, this is a layer which we add on top of the ultimate purpose/meaning of existence (life) which is simply to survive. You want a purpose? That's it. If you start going to higher abstractions like human metaphysics then in my opinion you're in the realm of non essential choices of meaning.

How do you know "life doesn't have one inherent meaning?" From what source can you assert that? Or did you just pull it out of your ...?
@gomiladroogies5951
@gomiladroogies5951 Жыл бұрын
When we say things like "meaning of life" what we're talking about is self-esteem. We all find ways to build our self esteem to convince ourselves that we're doing good at life. Now the problem is that this is largely cultural, so some cultures might focus more on piousness to be holy and devout, to some it might be to be strong a warrior, to others its to be famous, to some its their looks and to be liked. Different cultures have different values leading to different meanings. None of these meanings are really meaningful, it doesnt actually matter if youre famous or a great warrior but we have evolved this coping mechanism as a self defence to protect ourselves psychologically. We have the inate trait of self preservation but we unlike animals have the intelect to know we will die no matter what we do. So we use self esteem to protect us from the fear of death so we can live long enough to reproduce. We see people who get their self esteem destroyed they surrender to death and kill themselves.
@hanskung3278
@hanskung3278 Жыл бұрын
@@gomiladroogies5951 Well that's a first for me, self esteem being synonymous with life's meaning, is that what you meant to say? Because later, more accurately, you said self-esteem is a buffer, denial, against death anxiety.

@@likatari8638 I believe there could be no answer, at least none we know of. People have been trying to figure out what is "best" for the longest time. You can't calculate everything in advance, but you can bet on something you see as being better in comparison to other options. Funny thing is that you can be horribly wrong, BUT you can also be right, way beyond your wildest assumptions. Moreover, how can one even be sure about what is best for them? You are not in control of your life, roughly speaking, no one is. So what if you fail miserably? You are not dead. Well, you could be, but if you aren't, then it's not the end, and who can tell what awaits you. Maybe it's the only way to acquire skills necessary to pave a road to a better life. I think which choice you make is irrelevant, the fact that you make a choice is important. Everything is going to change, and you will make thousands of other choices in future, but you have to start somewhere.
