Outline & Notes 👇📝 0:00 - Morning 1:17 - Mantra 5:22 - Deep Work Session 1 8:07 - Social media and guitar 9:53 - Exercise 13:03 - Shower 16:48 - Deep Work Session 2 19:30 - Eating 25:03 - Shallow Work Session 28:21 - Reading 0:00 - Morning --- Sleep = 6-8h/night 30 min. power nap during the day. Lex sometimes does sprints, pulling all-nighters. Sleep. Diet. Exercise. --- the essentials for productivity Add passion and whatever else you need to do be happy and keep your stress levels low. 1:17 - Mantra --- Lex has a list containing all of this: 1. Rules & constrains 2. Gratitude 3. Long-term goals 4. Short-term goals 5. Visualize the day 6. Core principles *1. Rules & constrains* - A constant reminder on the current set of rules, constrains, various addictions, time-draining things. Example: social media - He only checks social media when he posts content. No more than 10 minutes. Very important to control. You can also remove yourself from SM entirely. This really brings him joy. He makes sure he exercises every single day. He has a strict diet that he follows. Keto. But he also makes sure to balance things out and eat food he enjoys as well. This is the first part of the mantra. *2. Gratitude* Visualize and meditate on the idea that he might die today. Mostly just breathing in and out. Then pause. Life is amazing. *3. Long-term goals* Ambitions, big goals that he would like to achieve in the next 5 years. He does this out loud. *4. Short-term goals* By the end of 2020 I want to do X. These might be sometimes out of reach, but achievable. _If I really work my butt off, then this is really possible. Let's get to work._ *5. Visualize the day* He literally tries to visualize himself going through the day. Think about a game of Sims you are playing and moving your characters on fast-forward. Both the struggles and focusing on the timing and the beat of the day. *6. Core principles* - Compassion. Empathy. Love Character. Integrity. Strength. Both physical and mental. 5:22 - Deep Work Session 1 --- 4 hour session of deep work. No interruptions. If an idea tries to derail him, he fights it and leaves it aside for later processing. Ideas will always keep coming. Interruptions allowed: water, coffee, bathroom Tries to limit those as much as he can. Ideal: 1 He uses an autonomous standing desk. Sometimes he sits, sometimes he stands. Doesn't wear a suit at home. *SETUP* - 3 monitors - ergonomic keyboard from Kinesis - Emacs editor Drained but happy at the end of the session. 8:07 - Social media and guitar --- Posts podcast. Checks comments from the previous day. The whole experience should be under 10 minutes. 20 minutes guitar and piano session. Music in general. Every single day. 9:53 - Exercise --- 1-2 hours of suffering AKA exercise. Long run. Listens to brown noise while he runs. 2-3 miles into the run ---> switches to an audiobook Currently listening to a book called _Rise and Fall of the Third Reich_ If you do not study history, you are doomed to repeat it. *Current exercise routine* --- - runs a minimum of 6 miles every day - 3-4 miles in he decides how far he wants to go - he usually doesn't feel like running, but he does it anyway and he ends up feeling really good This takes about 1 hour. After that he does a session of body-weight exercises. Now he does the David Goggings inspired Nickel And Dime Workout. 5 pull-ups & 10 push-ups every minute Does 15-20 minutes of that. Hard on the mind, body, but good for the soul. He also does fasting. 14-16 hours. Loves to exercise while fasting. This is a personal preference. Everybody is different. Never forget that. 13:03 - Shower --- Cold shower for the first minute. Plays a 1-minute long song to support the grind. During the shower he thinks about what the next step he should focus on his second deep work session. 16:48 - Deep Work Session 2 --- Another 4-hour session where he continues a particular task, focused for 4 hours straight. Focus on being present. If things do not seem to work. Stay in there. It will come. Some minutes are rough, and the rest are full of bliss. 19:30 - Eating --- He usually eats 2 times per day. He does fasting 14-16 hours. He is currently on Keto diet. 'Suits' his current situation. He eats meat and vegetables. About 2 pounds of meat, 1800-2000 calories per meal. Grass Fed Ground Beef as an example. Cauliflower for veggies. Goes crazy with the carrots sometimes. Party vegetable. Electrolytes. Sodium pills. 1000 mg in pill form. Potassium pills. Magnesium glycinate. Fish oil. First 2 days of Keto brought him headaches. Listen to your body. This is not medical advice. 25:03 - Shallow Work Session --- 4-hour session of relaxed work. E-mail check 3 times per day tops. Video editing. Website design. Hang out with friends. Opens terminal. IF girlfriend THEN girlfriend time. No girlfriend yet. Where are you BTW? Throws in some documentaries, Netflix. He is human. Few distractions. Few breaks. A big fan of a random adventure. 28:21 - Reading --- 2+ hours of reading. 1 hour = scientific paper 1+ of literature (fiction/non-fiction) Every single day he reads at least 1 paper. He is currently reading GPT-3 related papers. He thinks deeply while reading. What are the deep questions to ask? 1+ of literature (fiction/non-fiction) - Right now he is reading the major novels of Dostoyevsky. Does this on the desk or on the bed. After the reading session he takes a pause and does the part of the mantra he did in the morning. ... _END_ Thank you for reading! *Please note that these are some quick notes I took out of Lex's video essay. You should watch the full video for additional golden nuggets and the extended version of each idea! Lex, if you are reading this, thank you for helping me upgrade my world views. I really appreciate what you do. You inspired me to take a more systemic approach while working on _my KZbin channel_ (Robert Blanc) and on my personal research as well. Link to my work: --- kzbin.info Currently trying to combine and produce more videos on mental models, productivity, less confusion and futuristic scenarios. @@nebulousisgod I don't agree that Lex is "very controlled with his emotions" at least not in the way that you seem to be meaning... I think he shows emotion, vulnerability, and sensitivity, compassion, love, more than most any male I've seen (you don't necessarily have to shed tears to show emotion). And it's extremely courageous. His emotional intelligence appears to be off the charts. He really gets the humanity of people, he sees right into their heart, and shows that he deeply cares. Not only does he show the soft/vulnerable side of his nature...he does show anger too... but he is slow to anger (wisely, as one should be). For example, I could see that he was angry with Kanye toward the end of the recent interview...but he does so with "elegance" and still maintaining respect toward others. Again, you could see that as controlled, as I suppose most everyone is in the public eye-- but I don't see it in the way you seem to have meant... ~Peace and best regards....

@@mbrights3158 You nailed it, he has an intense sense of both self-awareness and emotional intelligence. @@catsaresocute650 we all go through life different ways friend. It’s no use comparing, you’re the only one who can judge you. I disagree wholeheartedly with a common feel good saying “you’re perfect just the way you are”. I think no one is, how boring would that be! The biggest help for me over the past few months has been, MOVE FIRST, THINK SECOND. Example: a thought pops into your head. “I should go to the gym”. Before you start thinking about wether or not you actually want to go to the gym, you start performing the nearest actionable step. In my case, writing down “look at gyms” on my phone. Example 2: you come home from a looooong day, you’re in bed already and suddenly think “oh shit I still have to brush my teeth”. Move your body first, then think. You can decide that you’re actually too tired and can bother missing a day, but only AFTER you’ve performed the smallest actionable step. Getting out of bed, or even sitting up straight in bed. Hope this helps! No one is perfect and no one has to be, this has helped em tremendously to get those nagging chores out of the way. The amount of time I usually spend THINKING about chores and other tedious tasks, far outweighs the amount of time the tasks actually take! Which is kind of crazy. But by MOVING FIRST, THINKING SECOND, you get over that initial hump. This is all just a game of recognizing your own unconscious habits and altering them if you want.

Inspirational. Wish I had that kind of discipline. Being single with no kids is great Lex. I remember those days when I had the discipline to stick to routines similar to this. As a single father and a senior, it's not easy to maintain a strict schedule or even have the motivation. Your video has inspired me though to get back to the old (young) me. Thanks!
@Metaroids Жыл бұрын
I just read about Alderian psychology and from what i learned, I can say that you are using your kids (and probably wife too) as an excuse not to do the things you believe you should/want to be doing. Because being disciplined, being hard, its tough. And you'd rather say to yourself "I have my family so I dont have time to exercise or take that extra gig or study a new field Im interested in" instead of doing the hard work. Its not because of circumstance. Its because you just dont wamt to be better.

damn, I am a software engineer and I understand the deep focus, the grind and how hard it can be to be in the zone. I do 2x4h sessions of programming and then I am done for the day. I allow myself to be lazy without any schedule, I might play piano, I might exercise, I might watch youtube for the rest of the day. This here is something different. The guy lives like a monk. Having said this, thanks to the pandemie that I can read and do deep work without the hussle of traffic (or nice coffee chit chat in the pantry in the office). I think companies should recognise and empower deep work.

@szebike4 жыл бұрын
"Depression" just means you take too much time for things with "bad vibes" [sad music,sad media,sad thoughts etc.] stop it and stop thinking about shitty stuff and how indequate you may or may not be just be and let go of those thoughts its ballast you don't need if you start that negative loop again be concious about it and stop yourself like you would stop a dog shittng on your carpet. About that meaning in life thing don't overthink that you are basically the universe observing yourself the small time you are alive is an interesting ride in a somehwat intelligent monkeybody enjoy and do something fun without getting obsessed.
@szebike4 жыл бұрын
@@VashTheDamnFiend There is always a root for negative thoughts and those roots are inside you. Taking substances to sooth them is like taking painkillers while you have a needle in your foot its improtant to think about yourself and about that root you are the master of your brain and thoughts and not your " inner demons". You should pull out that needle first and use substances to boost positive thoughts occasionally if you are stable enough [but I recommend only natural stuff like weed because artifical shit is usally too strong ]. I mean thats what "professionals" tell you anyway (before giving you artificial substances to make you addictet so he can make more money on you). I think as a first step one should avoid watching/playing/reading too much negative stuff without some nice stuff as balance (every time I watch something horrific on youtube I try to load a "try not to laugh video" or catvideo to mix up my mind a bit its a silly example maybe you can think of something mor elaborate ^^) but I usally avoid horrific stuff anyways there is no need to carrry the worlds heavy load on your shoulder. Nowdays all our media is full of negative stuff [horror games, horror movies, horror news is what sells best besides weird artificial sex] no wonder your mind gets flooded with it your output is your input+ your character. Talking with someone about your negative stuff usally helps a lot because by speaking it out sometimes things will loose its power (or you realize how silly it is ) though it is important to not to talk to weird people supporting negaive stuff or trying to manipulate you into doing it more. You can do your best to get rid of the roots of negative thoughts by just letting some things go which you can't change (like loosing beloved ones you can get into a negative thought spiral because its an "unsolvable" problem). And you should shit on th eopinion of othe rpeople [to a certain degree of course] and don'T take yourself too seriously it always helps. Actually every living thing including you is the universe observing itself from inside we should make the best of our limited time and try to enjoy the ride with each other. Edit: I forgot to mention that a workout helps you a lot too to get rid of negative things depending on yourfitness you can start from daily 5 minutes to more (though you shoudln't overdo it I don't agree with that perfectionsim in sports and I think Lex is overdoing it a bit too but if he is happy with it & his body can take it without longterm wearout its OK I think ]. And good natural food is imortant too for the mind like fruits instead of sweets is a great idea.Ok that should be most of the advice I can give you I was there where you were but you can get out of it because its all in your head and you can change it with some pracitce and time. One last and important advice do not compare yourself with others just with yourself and always try tog et better as your past slef day by day. Everyone has different background stories you simply can't compare one human to another [not even twins live the same life] and other peole in social media always look beautiful and happy its artificial and not true.

Shane, the very fact that You are depressive is an almost guaranteed indication of Your amazing mental capacity. Both Lex and Vitalik Buterin of Etherium fame (I just listened to that Podcast before this one) are most likely the same type psychologically as You are. People who are not that concerned with day-to-day but wonder much more about the meaning of it all. I wish I could point You to the source of my insights - but it is all in Russian. The very basic ideas : this type of person was a night watchman of the tribe when humans were still in caves - so they developed certain habits and needs: they want quiet because their ears are extremely sensitive as their job was to listen to the night noises. So if they were yelled at as children or surrounded by noisy environments - it was extremely damaging to them. These people are night owls - so being forces into early rising ( for school or work ) is also very tough on them. They were all alone watching the night sky and stars : from this the keen interest in the meaning of it all and our place in the universe; also not really being a social butterfly. Today many are on the autistic spectrum. (continued)
@svetlanall91413 жыл бұрын
These are the future humans who are being raised by yesterday's parents/teachers who mostly have no understanding of what such children are and what they need. Hence the oh-so-convenient autistic spectrum. That was the bad news. Now - the good news. Without exception these are the brightest human beings we have and, when allowed to develop properly, they are the geniuses of tomorrow. Not saying I know anything about Your circumstances - but the very best thing You can do for Yourself is accept that Your personality is not exactly of this time and place and it is not at all any of Your "fault". Accept and love who you are - just as You are. And try Your best to find something creative to occupy Your mind - the more You utilize Your talents - the better You will feel. Does not matter if it is "productive" or "realistic" or approved of by anyone. You do You. Because it is Your life and Your mind and it is beautiful: capable of abstract thinking few others possess. Use it for the good of humanity and for Your own personal satisfaction. To me the meaning of life is to live life and see what adventures You can have and enjoy and learn from given all the talents and capacities gifted to You. Nobody's approval required. Sorry if my comments are not welcome - I am just so worried about all the wonderful bright boys and young men who are being mutilated by the current societal norms. And I am tired to watch so many of them giving up. Hugs.

Amen. For me a man with a lot of time is a turn off. I respect someone who is always busy just like me and we meet when we meet. Lovey Dovey men are a huge turn off.

as someone who was married for 10 years and then became single again, I can say that being in a close and traditional relationship is a tremendous time suck that only indulges on pleasure and joy of living. this is something you do after you have achieved your goals and are ready to raise children. I did it in an opposite manner, where my family was a priority over my career, and I had to sacrifice timeless opportunities to make sure my children could become competent adults. My children are all grown up now, and I am now just starting to realize what I have missed for so many years, the freedom to develop my mind, my character and to actually make real progress in accomplishing my goals.

@@zalmoxiscat3217 Many women want to be adored and coddled upon, it is just this recent generation of women that spend their lives consuming social media, constantly masturbating and only using men for pleasure. It is a real dysfunction in my opinion.

@@ShaunPrince How can you say that making your family a priority and making sure your children would become competent adults is a time suck? Seriously?! I hope your parents didn't feel that way about you. Sounds like you just had a bad experience in your marriage. Balancing work/career and family is a challenge but most people usually do both.

I've just recently discovered you and your channels. I am so grateful. This video helps me so much. I tend to float and you, by your example, give the inspiration which only a genuine catalyst for good can offer. Yours is exactly the message I need at this crucial time. Today is my birthday. This video has not appeared today by coincidence. It is an indescribable gift. Thank you for sharing your life.

Dear Lex, Thank you so much for making this video and your podcast in general! 🙏🙏🙏 I am just starting my career in academia. I would love to see and highly appreciate videos about your paper reading system and other tips concerning academia from you. Because honestly so few people teach about the "how-to" within that sphere and do it as entertaining as you do. Sending you lots of love from somewhere in the world and wishing you all the best!

I used to function like this. Completely consumed by productivity and optimised everything.... got sick eventually. I was doing everything right but not every body can handle this. And I think you have to see deep meaning in it too... You can't be doing it just for the sake of doing it.

Андрей Бахарковскй it depends on your temperament. If your hyper-conscientious, you will love this type of structured and optimized day. But if you’re not, and most people aren’t, you will want a bit of flexibility and randomness throughout your day.
