I interpreted the question differently; how do you promote your work without being a braggart and building yourself up so much that when you do the job the client is disappointed that it isn't better.
@Kami8705

I would say it's just as important to be confident in your work but also acknowledge your limits. It's the people that oversell their skills/product that disappoint the client. If you aren't sure if you're capable of doing something to the standard you want, be honest about that.

My wife and I struggle with being introverts, and wanting to be humble, while also running a small business in which we constantly have to battle with an algorithm that rewards a "look at me, look at me" mindset. We have to remind ourselves that many times people are choosing our products over other people's because they are interested in us as people and our story. That's what an influencer is - someone with a personality captivating enough to garner a fanbase. The hard pill to swallow is there will always be people out there with as good or not-as-good products as your own, but they will get more attention because they know how to promote themselves. So we try not to feel guilty in situations where we are forced to be a bit "blowhardy". We make sure that we are trying to be equally accommodating and listen to people to balance out those times we have to be our own cheerleaders.

One of the more enlightening personal growth items that I’ve learned is that the introvert/extrovert labels do not stem from how you act. (Though your behavior may often follow the one you identify with most.) Rather it is which situation refreshes you, which you draw energy from. Many introverts can be “out front,” even the life of the party. But only by choice and only for a time. That energy will wane, sometimes quickly or suddenly, and they will need to withdraw to a quiet, private circumstance to recharge their batteries.

This confusion, and general un-undersanding genuinely annoys me. I don't want to be mad at people bc you don't know what you don't know, but I feel like everyone just uses introvert and antisocial as the same word, and I as a human with emotions still get irrationally angry about this. I don't think my anger here is towards any individual, but rather to society as a whole. Anyways thanks for reading my rant of self reflection

1:16 I think perhaps the “disappointing your client” part may have meant promoting your work to such a high standard that you effectively overstate/overvalue your work or overpromise outcomes to your client/future clients, which would lead to a client’s disappointment if they were expecting more from you based on your self promotion. I’m not sure how that would be quantified exactly but that’s how I read the question. Perhaps you oversell your skill set and then come to regret it later because the job you take requires more of you than you are equipped to give. Either way, the direction in which you took this part of the question was still interesting to me, as I love hearing you share your perspectives from the numerous experiences you’ve had throughout your life. Basically, self awareness. One of the things I learned about myself is I get really excited talking about the things I love and I'm so desperate to share what I know that I basically forget to listen, or use the time other people are talking to think about what I'm going to say next. Once I realized that, I started making conscious effort to actually listen....and I'm also completely honest about it. When I catch myself doing that I'll literally say "Sorry, I get carried away. I'll stop hijacking the conversation now. What where you saying?"

Often times someone will tell me a story about something that happened in their life, and I find it even more interesting because the story parallels something that happened to me, that is very similar. When they finish, oftentimes I will tell them about my similar story. For me, it's not about being a blowhard, but rather, "hey friend, I identify with you and I understand what you're saying because I've had a similar experience"

Maybe Adam didn't explain it properly, as I don't see it so much about not telling that story of your own, to me it seemed more about how you tell it. Make sure the other person has finished their story first and don't tell yours with a tone, goal or whatever to one up their story. Just tell it, don't push it to make it seem like a story it isn't to beat them in any way.

I think, in 'service industry' terms, this is referred to as active listening or passive listening. I think. There's another level entirely where we are listening to a story, completely alien to our own experiences, but we are STILL transfixed/absorbed by it. Edit: I may be fooling myself. It's possible I've been finding relatable elements in just about everything I've stayed still long enough to listen to. I reckon, though, most people can tell when we are interested. Wanting to reply with a similar experience or wanting to compete with a similar but bigger experience - those urges come from a different place and are either unnecessary (people can tell we're interested without them) or downright status jockeying. It's a very human drive, though, to want to demonstrate that we are either the same, or that we are better, in an apparently reciprocal way!

This has often been connected with neurodivergence- people often have the tendencies to see something they identify with in another person or that person expresses interest in one of our niche interests so we explode with connection and lead to oversharing. We have someone who understands and vent all over them because we want to feel understood and accepted, but also want to show the other person/people that we accept them too. It is by no means exclusive to people who have various descriptors that fall under the wide umbrella of "neurodivergent" (and that umbrella encompasses a lot of people who don't know/think/believe they are within it), but when people do take on that descriptor, we do tend to see this kind of behavior. Not because they are obnoxious, but because they are excited and hope you are too.

Something to keep in mind is that there are different communication styles. For some people, they give and expect sympathy and back chat (the little phrases that don't really mean anything except that you're listening). Other people give and expect showing that they relate to what the speaker is going through by sharing a similar story. The second is more common with people who are "neurodivergent" (having ADD, autism, or other similar conditions that cause their minds to process things differently than "normal" people). If you're not sure which, you can employ the strategy of asking if they just need an ear and to get the story out of their system or if they want to know someone relates to their experience. It's a similar strategy for when someone is venting -- ask if they are looking for ideas/solutions or just for someone to listen. It can save a lot of misunderstandings down the road.

I feel hesitant to use this worn out KZbin phrase, but "this resonated with me" in so many ways. I began misting up when you read this comment and then your genuine physical response of sliding your chair back, taking a meaningful deep breath saying "this is real". Oh my lands! First let me state how sorry I am for anyone who has been through this. It truly was soul crushing for me. I was not brave enough to ever talk about my few experiences with a family member who did this to me as a young girl and later on when I gifted a handmade blanket to my son. I'm not sure I've ever spoken to anyone about how deeply it affected me. This was a cathartic experience and it genuinely helped me. I can only imagine it has helped others and I will share this! Thank you again!

It’s always hard for someone with a lot of life experience to keep their mouth shut because they have done a lot. They have a lot of experiences and by virtue of having been through so many experiences they usually do have a story about the same thing as Ralph at the company party and having been there, done that a few times it’s likely a better story. Sometimes it’s difficult to keep your mouth shut and let a truly interesting story just go unheard. Unless you remember that none of it matters because nobody cares. Once you realize that everyone is simply waiting for their turn to talk, you can leave your story about climbing a steep cliff in the rain at night only to fight off rattlesnakes once you made it across the river to yourself. Don’t try to entertain people because they don’t care even if your story is better.

The way of the stoic. Personally, I think I would quite like to hear your story but I appreciate the psychology behind not telling me. Resist the urge to tell me. As you say - the living is in the doing. That's all that really matters. To all the people recording the concert on their mobile phones - the living is in the doing... You may like to try internalising it properly. I mean - if somebody gives you the pill to cure all ills are you going to take a photo of it, to interminably show to other people, or are you going to snarf it?

Letting two other people talk before adding to the conversation is a good technique, not only in trying to avoid being a blowhard but also allowing people to like you. I try something similar; I'll ask someone two questions about the story they're telling before adding something from me. It also lets me listen to what people are saying, probably even more important in a conversation.

Speaking of blowhards, I think this gets easier with experience. In a sense, you go from a salesman of bs to guru in a field, technology, or subject. Salesman in this context is simply you selling yourself or a perception of yourself to someone else as you discuss subject matter. When you really know your stuff, what comes out of your mouth has value, often tremendous value. But when you're naive and at some early, inexperienced stage within the same field, technology, or subject, you often say a lot but present little useful information. I think the guru is appreciated by most, even if their presence is a bit overwhelming. Everyone learns and comes away from the time with a little more wisdom. I think the salesman of bs is just annoying and mostly wastes people's time. Usually most come away with no new information or worse confusing and anger. Recognize when you're the salesman and be willing to shut up and learn. Something I personally like doing in situations where I'm the guru of that topic is I will purposefully educate. I don't mean talk for the sake of talking or mansplain stuff. I mean properly educate and play the role of teacher. Telling you my thoughts and teaching are two entirely different modes of communication, so you automatically put yourself into a different mind space. I will also be mindful of two things. One, I will be mindful of the want of the other participants. What do they want from the conversation? What is their goal? What do they want to walk away with? Then I will cater my discussion towards fulfilling those wants. I want them to feel accomplished and complete on their interests. Two, I will be mindful of silence. I will talk for a while through a topic and maybe meander through ancillary branching elements, but if I'm been chatting for a while, I will purposefully pause and allow silence, reflection, and more importantly guidance and questions from the other participants. I will almost always let them guide the conversation by plopping down these blank road signs that they then populate. Their response tells me where to go next, where to focus, to talk more or less, etc. And during these times I will not talk over them or compete for that quiet space. I will let them decide when that time is done.

I get that "If I do this, they will talk about it" thing because it's how good (non-victimizing) pranks work. If you put the effort in, it will be worth it BECAUSE people will see the craziness of what it took to put the effort it. Which is the point! My approach to self promotion. 01: Do things I want to do. 02: Be reticent and defensive if anybody else shows an interest. 03: Be suspicious of opinion. 04: Declare war on anybody who not only expresses the unsolicited opinion but then goes on to be disparaging. 05: If you want this you're going to either have to steal it or convince me you're worthy. Is that wrong? I feel like it's working for me. I severed the link, you see, between what somebody else thinks of me (and, by extension, what I might be doing) and my endocrine system. I can't depend on positive reinforcement. I don't think it's healthy. It's feverish with manipulation and I think I might be very sensitive and utterly unbiddable. ('Ah, but you're expressing your thoughts therefore you are inviting feedback!!') - NO, I'm not :D. This is probably the last time I will have any interaction with what I've just said! I'm off, now. I read "without disappointing your client" as promising the word in your advertising and not being able to deliver, such as saying your your "the best in the world" when your clearly not and not as using your previous work to promote yourself. I've seen this with: ego with glass blowers, overconfident handy men, the most worthless carpenters who brag the most, and companies that advertise more than they answer the phone. I personally am as honest as possible and this works well with intelligent people and not at all with the lowest common denominator.

But there are times when I just want to sing my own praises to shut up these other folks as they are so over the top. Keeping my mouth shut is hard. But there have been a few times I've let the ego out and I've regretted every one of them afterwards because it's just (IMHO) rude. I've never had any complaints (so far, thank god) so maybe I'm not 'going over the top'. But it still remains one of my biggest professional fears - because I just don't want to be 'that guy'. Most animals want to believe your work is more than it really is. Lions gave up on not blowing hard & just saying whatever big job it is they want to hear. If they want to hear it's an AI breakthrough, that's what it is.

Non disclosure of work can be a real P in the A when you regularly work for big companies who insist you never share the work you do for them. As an animator and designer this happens a lot in my industry. It shouldn't be legal in my opinion, how are you mean to advertise your services if you can't ever tell anyone what you've done? Maybe in certain situations it's necessary, i don't mind holding off until the thing is out and public, or a matter of national security etc but in film, advertising or games... whyyy have an indefinite non-disclosure??

I know this wasn't the question, but dealing with a blowhard, can be difficult. I have a cousin, that I like very much, but he is a blowhard. He will dominate every conversation. What I do is, I listen. I listen as much as I can. If it wears on me too much, it's time for me to go, even if it's not. I do that because I don't want to tell him he's a blowhard and won't let me get a word in. For me, it's not worth having that confrontation. I just excuse myself, and move on.

The secret to not being a mansplainer is, when you're about to explain anything, ask "do you know about X" and "what do you know about X" and listen to them reply. Then if the answer is factually correct, move on. If it's partially inaccurate politely reply with corrections or additional info. If they didn't know, THEN you can explain it. Easy peasy.

There's a fine line between a self confident & healthy ego & a self centered arse. I spent my 1st 35yrs in the world of necessarily strong egos, athletics, & saw a diverse range. I also came to understand, as the level of athletes I worked w/ increased until professional & world class athletes were the norm, how absolutely necessary self reliance, self motivation, drive & yes, a very strong sense of ego is the success at the highest levels of competition. It was common place to hear people not of the sports world exclaim how ego or self centered some athlete was. Not knowing the person makes one wonder if it's true, but when I got to the point I did know the person, I realized quickly it was a matter of perception.

Being a blowhard is sort of an autistic thing, In order to attempt to relate to people we naturally want to tell a similar story. It can come off poorly frequently but to get around it sometimes I make it a point to explain that I dont mean to take the spotlight, I just mean to be empathetic.

I always understood "Blowhard" to refer to a person who talks a good line, but doesn't actually perform that well (or at all). And that definition *certainly* does *not* apply to this channel or any of its presenters.

Like many Americans. I am always amazed how Americans verbally raise themselves up and make themselves look incredible and then you are so disappointed about their actual skills. Here in Europe and especially England, The Netherlands and Germany it’s seen so pompous to tell that you are excellent and you can do this, this , this. That you won this award that you were the top of the class. Which here in The Netherlands would immediately by countered with: “the remedial class?” 😂 And it’s a mortal sin to say you’ve done something and basically you only had an idea or a part of an idea and others did it. We are very explicit about what our role was and we tend to rather undersell and over deliver. Very different et cultures. When a German says: “oh I can only speak a few Dutch words” I know that him and I can converse in Dutch. I had an American colleague say: “I speak Spanish!” So we run into some problems and we have a Mexican colleague who hardly spoke English, so I asked my colleague to translate for me. Well it was about “high school” level Spanish. When we say we speak a language we speak a language conversationally and not know a few words from a high school class. In that case I would speak French and Spanish and even Russian 😂

I’m an artist. My favorite media are ceramics, and drawing. IMO, my pottery, and drawings are the best I’ve ever seen. I’ve been at it for over two decades, but I’ve only sold to two people. I’ve never advertised. Those people asked if they could buy my work. It would be nice if I could make a profit doing it, but I’m still trying to figure it out. Ultimately I feel like I’d rather be an artist, and starve; than to do something I hate, and have a suitable 401k.
