adyashanti.org - How do you rest as awareness? Do you have to do anything to rest as awareness? Adyashanti invites you into this exploration of what it means to ‘rest as awareness.’ As you relinquish the mind’s desire to constantly be doing or understanding something, you can step out of the egoic mind state and into all-inclusive awareness.
Video Excerpted from “Rest As Awareness”(DVD #48):
bit.ly/2vaPw9r
Quotes from this Video:
“’Resting as awareness’ isn’t a state of doing, it’s a state of being.”
“Awareness isn’t being the watcher and it’s not really being the witness -- both of those are things that egos do.”
“If resting as awareness actually happens, then at some point it will dawn on you that you and awareness are not two different things.”
“Awareness is much more what you are than all the ideas that you ever had about yourself in your life.”

He hits the nail on the head. Existence exists without your help. So resting as awareness doesn't mean that you are doing anything. I've always seen it that way. Glad to hear someone articulate it this well

So in other words, awareness is not of the mind. I can see that. The mind can only ever refer to the past. I love that he brought up that sense of nervousness that the mind feels at this suggestion, since that's exactly what I was feeling at that moment. I figure that that's a good kind of nervousness to have, it means I'm on-target. I feel like if he didn't put this out, that would have remained a subconscious nervousness, for me. The fact that he pointed it out really gave me the opportunity to spot it and notice that it is a good thing.

@@josephoutward Obviously you haven’t experienced it. You’ll never believe it until you do. Nothing I say can change that. Personally, last May I was having an anxiety attack, I searched KZbin for a random meditation and accidentally ended up discovering that I am not the mind. Not only am I not the mind, but the mind in itself is not an entity. I saw this directly, and walked around for 8 whole days in clear knowledge of this. I had no idea that this was even a possibility until it “happened” to me. I’ve never felt so peaceful in my life. Now I’m just trying to get back there. I’ve had at least another 5 experiences every bit as reality-shattering as this since last May. So, do I believe this stuff? Belief has very little to do with it. I have experienced the truth of the matter directly and whatever beliefs I held at the time had absolutely no bearing on it.

I am seeing the magic of these insights played out beautifully in the dark souls one universe. The initial prison cell, the walls and halls of the asylum, and the asylum boss all as images of the doing mind and the ego awareness as the "chosen one " It holds up all the way to the end game and new game plus. What a fabulous zen koan they snuck into adolescent minds

I read Emerson translated by Sam Torode into the sayings, language of today, not as flowery, but the message behind the poetry is exposed. Jesus, Buddha & many other known & unknown to history & what they believed is the same message. What l really agree with because l had the same view is Jesus didn't actually see the universal mind, God. It is a knowing, a switch after that realisation of conscious awareness, our true selves, it's a different vibe, a dropping of the luggage we hoard during our lives & try on 1000's of times even though we hate them & don't fit, but try not to wear their wardrobe out for everyone to see & judge, comment & so have a different set of clothes for each occasion & how we want ourselves viewed. Just be your self & we don't need to be a Buddha, even though he wanted & knew we all could be. If we live true to ourselves and follow the one Commandment, treat others as you would like to be treated, Commandments aren't from God for we are born innocence, aware & the commandments we know without being taught for the Universe asks nothing of us, good, bad, indifferent, free will to choose your life. Why does God let bad things happen, she doesn't, it happens because of us, not God, free will, we reap what we sow, not from God, the devil, us. We have no sin & we are lost, a lost child when found is enveloped in Love, care & is made to feel safe, not punished for that would be cruel to punish a lost now found child. 🙏

Relinquishing the doer doesn't mean you can't go to the supermarket. It's an ontological state, no matter WHAT you do, a state of Sat-Chit-Ananda..

egos can become skilled at being fake spiritualists, saying all the right words, but that is not what we are talking about or focusing on in this moment of teaching here. being real and natural without applying a practice to achieve perfect best functional success in this moment. choosing a spiritual community to be a part of and be inclusive within and grow. and sustain your own personal life as the exoteric practice with this community and in the esoteric realm participating in the community meditation and reading and satsang.

I listened to Allan Wallace the other day and i couldn't but cringe every other 2 minutes, the amount of unjustifiable leaps in logic in that man's mouth. And while saying all those things, with a perfect bold and clear face he kept asking the audience: "Isn't it perfectly logical? You see this is science of the soul, like Galileo did with the starry sky". The sad thing is that he's a very pleasant and charismatic person, making his talks very enjoyable, but if there's anything that opposes enlightenment that's dogma, superstition, intellectual dishonesty and most of all charisma. Truth doesn't need charisma, confabulations and lies do. Adyashanti, on the other hand is one of the most lucid and profound bearers of eastern wisdom there are. He cuts straight through every ego-friendly superstition and other adornments enjoyed so much by the ego, which doesn't make his talks so appealing but they more than make out in honesty and clarity.

@@josephoutward Like cognitive scientists John Vervaeke says, there are several types of knowledge, but the vast majority of people are hooked only on "propositional" knowledge. This is the kind of knowledge you’re encoding in symbolic statements. But however important, and it is important, this type of knowledge is very shallow. As a caricatural example think of someone who has read some new age article and took from it the following propositional knowledge "I am the universe!" (It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, it will serve my point regardless). This knowledge won’t change them one bit, except giving them the temporary "good feels" whenever they think it. But give them cancer or just steal their bike and they’ll wail and mourn exactly like any other egocentric individual. Funny thing seeing the universe wailing that it got cancer. Might as well take that proposition and write it on a piece of paper and put it in the shirt pocket, instead of your memory, and it will have the same effect on your identity and experience. But then there are other types of knowledge like procedural, perspectival and participatory. The first one has to do with the non-explicit non-propositional instinctive way in which we know how to behave and integrate with the world-knowing how to swim, how to drive, how to kiss (your child, your wive, the one with which you’re having an intense sexual relationship). The other two are very hard to explain. Perspectival knowledge is also a knowledge that is NOT coded in language. It’s the instinctive knowing you have that changes the internal attitude/orientation you have within your experience, thus changing the "geometry" of experience. I remember being in the kitchen with my extended family reunited for the holidays, and even though we were all exactly in the same environment, due to their particular personal perspectival knowledge, everyone was experiencing that same environment as a different reality-each was relating to the same context in different ways based on their inner perspective. Important note here: you can educate these types of knowledge but they aren’t under your conscious will; most people don’t even realize they have these aspects of their minds. My nephews and parents had no idea about themselves deploying perspectival skills, just like an armadillo who has rolled up in a defensive attitude doesn’t have any idea that it deployed an evolved instinct-they just engage in those things reflexively, without any meta awareness. And the last one, participatory knowledge, is how you see/feel/know yourself to be part of Existence. Some feel themselves to be nothing more complex than "workers and family men" (like my dad), others feel themselves as children of God, others feel themselves to be manifestations of God, or one of the endless forms bustling forth from the great Dao, or physical mechanisms evolved by darwinian evolution, or being no one (having an enlightened allocentric conscious experience instead of an egocentric consciousness), etc. Imagine how different JD Rockefeller’s experience of who he was, was to Thich Quang Duc (the monk who immolated himself in protest of vietcong persecution). This fundamental way of experiencing who/what you are influences all other stances, goals, desires, reactions, etc you have. Participatory knowledge does evolve or changes drastically but to a much lesser degree. Precisely because these types of knowledge aren’t verbal types of knowledge, you cannot easily convey them to other people like you convey propositional knowledge. If someone enlightened tried to convey their participatory and perspectival knowledge to someone else they would have almost no other options besides language. And the minute they would engage in language they would be constrained by language. They would have to make a mockery of their experience by saying things like "i feel like i am the universe" which is a very misleading sentence. I’ve heard teachers that these teachings are like constant nudges, none of them individually accurate, but collectively trying to orient you towards realization-and once you have it you know that all the words used were terribly wrong. The best way of using words to point to these things is by being poetic, by trying to point to things beyond the words themselves. But people are habituated to clear concrete shallow straightforward propositions, so this vague nebulous poetic stuff appears as nonsense. Alan Watts said: *The Teaching is like a finger pointing to the Moon (which in eastern literature symbolizes the metaphysical truth/or mystery). But in order to see the moon your gaze must let go of the finger and see beyond it. The point is not in the pointing. People though are captivated by the finger, they admire it intensely, suck on it for comfort-that’s what Christians are doing with their bible and rituals. They never suspect the beyond to which those things are pointing.*
