adyashanti.org - In this compelling dialogue, Adyashanti speaks with a sangha member about the ‘I got it, I lost it’ phenomenon when it comes to realizing the fundamental reality. Together they discuss the process of self-realization, the shifts of perspective that come, and what to do when it feels like the realization is not present in your life.
Video Excerpted From “The Timeless Nature of Being”:
bit.ly/3814RZl
Quotes from this Video:
“What is it that has always existed?”
“If we’ve ever really actually had some real awakening experience, then there is always something about it that is still with us.”
“At some moment, the fundamental reality can show up as a guy realizing the fundamental reality-and then maybe a day, week, month, year later, the fundamental reality shows up as a guy that doesn’t feel like he’s realized the fundamental reality anymore.”

I give the guy in the audience a lot of credit. He was scared but he persisted. He allowed himself to be vulnerable, and between the two of them, they teased out some beautiful, mysterious truths.

Such compassion for this person; his desire is earnest. He's just trying to figure it out. This process is nothing if not an exercise in coming into humility.

From his words, I would venture he has seen more of reality than I have yet, but to see his desire, and his struggle, and perhaps pain, was to feel compassion. Thank you, Jennifer S, it soothes me to see your compassionate response.

For a long time I made things much more complicated then they needed to be. I am so grateful for the many teachers that have shown me that the Truth is right here. In plain sight. Experientially. Its not lost in spiritual word play. Those words are just more concepts. Just be here. With what is. The unfolding of it all.

to the people calling this person ignorant or unconscious: i would suggest pointing your attention to within to examine whether that judgement comes from an unconscious place itself. i also felt embarrassed for a moment while watching this but looking at the embarrassment made it seem like it's just shrinking away from an experience that doesn't live up to my expectations, be it of language, demeanor or any other attribute, and that made the embarrassment evaporate. after that the guy seemed charming and genuine to me

Waching this unfold I feel I am lifted off the ground, and I rise up. There is no grounding here. I would not call this gentleman ignorant or uncounscious, but I do feel that he shows how perilous the spiritual path can be; it is fairly obvious to me that this person was, at this point in his life, rather confused. This gentleman needs some sober medicine, a talk on mundane and non-spiritual things, a grounded girlfriend. He doesn't need another talk on awakening; so lost in the spiritual, so scary. And yes; that deserves our compassion. I suspect though, that if Adya would have been very sober and down to earth, and would have spoken of eating peanut butter sandwiches, he would have given this gentleman something more than when he decided to engage into spiritual conversation with him.

It’s like looking into the eyes of a man who is where you want to be, who also knows that you’re where you need to be, and looks forward to seeing you realize that. I sometimes think about what I would ask him in person, but when a question comes up, it’s answered. Feels like he doesn’t give answers, as much as tools,to find your own answers .. or accept where you are without them. Thank you!

To judge is to reveal a part of you that is not healed. We are all growing and learning and in this moment in time this man was given some words that will help him along his spiritual path. This video is also teaching us about something within ourselves. Maybe some are feeling the same way as this man, maybe some judge him. To judge him is to judge yourself. Looking within and knowing we are all one, yet we are suffering from neurotic thoughts of the ego. To judge is the ego and it’s thoughts. Unity is seeing everything and everyone as a whole. Our ego tries to claim it and make sense of it but it’s not something you can really put into words or define. It is unconditioned. 🙏❤️

So many judgmental comments void of compassion here. 😔 My heart hurts for him as it has and does for myself. I've been where this guy is in this video, during my first experience of the absolute. In the first moments, I was in a tug of war between the absolute and my mind trying to make sense and articulate all that it meant and would change, to my friends who were far more advanced than I was in the moment. This guy at one point did KNOW and experienced the absolute. It's because of that experience, he feels comfortable having friendly banter and saying "I forgive you", "you should try it sometime". He's literally shaking up there, very nervous, self-conscious, and practically in tears because he knows that no matter what, he'll come across as arrogant to many, many egos when attempting to find the words to give to adya that will confirm his past realization/experience. He's struggling with the reality of ego death, which means he cares what other egos think of him and how he is perceived by his peers. He seeks validation/love from adya and from himself. There is only himself, our self, in the absolute. No higher authority to give him what he can't yet give to himself. Have compassion, realization is embarrassing to ones egoic self. He is well aware.

The problem with so many of the comments here is that it comes from the place of thinking these are two people talking to one another. This is just the same consciousness speaking that listens, just expressing itself different through two different forms. This guy talking to Adyashanti is the way he is and saying what he says because that's the way he's been conditioned and programmed to behave. No real problems here, just two different expressions of life.

Adyashanti's state of being is a better teaching in this fragment, than his actual explanation. Adya just goes with the flow and he's getting a lot of mixed signals from the guy, so he doesn't know how to answer either. When Adya switched from confusion (even slight irritation) to a look of compassion in his eyes that was beautiful to see. The person could've been asked what he really meant with realization. The thing is, the vibe I got from the guy (the awkwardness and distorted being) is something I've experienced a few times myself. I can be compassionate because I know its really uncomfortable, and the words you want to say just won't come out the right way - and can even sound arrogant. One problem I feel is that the guy still has a lot of concepts in his mind of how its suppost to be, instead of trusting in the fact that this is simply what his journey looks like. Theres nothing wrong with going in and out a few times, theres probably a reason for it. Adya hit the nail on the head when he said - just relax - but its too bad no one mentioned the word 'trust'. I feel compassion for the guy, but putting one foot in front of the other we always get there.

Clarity itself is not the experience. Awareness is aware of the experiences coming and going. The culprit here is the conflation of "peak experiences" with awareness. So when the experience goes, people feel they've "lost it". Without realizing it, most people have this concept/picture of realization as an unremitting peak experience - which is only another concept after all. Another thing: what you remember as a "moment of awakening" or "sudden glimpse of reality", whatever you wish to call it, is not IT; it's only memory, a reconstruction, edited version of what happened. And with all due respect to some teachers, I would drop words like "fundamental reality" from my vocabulary, as they all too easily become a fixed concept. It then happens that people, by being concerned with "fundamental reality", start constructing pictures of what that means - and later, fear that they're somehow living "outside" that "reality", which is just more of their concepts. Words like these, taken seriously, multiply concepts and enforce dualistic thinking.

I found this conversation very enlightening. I saw/heard aspects of myself in the inquisitor and it really shed light on how effectively the ego can utilize even experiences of “ego-death”, for its own benefit. I also understand associating the experience of Enlightenment with grandiosity. When, presently, I feel an attribute of the Master to be patience, regardless of life’s current level of stimulation. Adya really displayed this quality exquisitely. I really cherish this valuable talk, though I do admit it was quite difficult at times lol.

imo The desire to do everything possible to get back up there in consciousness itself is what prevents people from getting up there again. That means they are still not timeless, they have a past which experienced something amazing and are now hoping for a better future to experience it again. The only way is to let go, yield, surrender. Just relax as Adya suggested. Do nothing for that purpose, have no purpose. Just be as though you were when you had it. You were full of gratitude, selflessness, blissfulness, work on making all that your quality rather than a tool to get anywhere. Be exactly all that without expecting it to come or not come. Be present and don't worry about it, it's no big deal while being a big deal. :)

Yes, I agree, this is a very wise comment. I once glimpsed reality as this man did, and for the first few days after, I felt exactly how he sounded. "What was that? Where did it go? How can I get it back?" A thousand questions arose and every one of them caused more anxiety. I started to realise then that my attempts to understand what I had seen were actually taking me further away from it. I wonder if it is truly possible to remain in the 'enlightened' state at all times, but as Adya said, all sides are equal. My conclusion then is; whether we are chasing tyres, or grasping the entire elephant, it is all the same thing. It is it. And the more often one can recognise that where they are is exactly where they should be (even when you don't really feel it), the closer they will be to truth.

@@sammoon7897 Well said, my friend. We are always moving towards it. We can do it gracefully by seeing everything as an opportunity to grow. Growing means to constantly work with our thoughts. Daily affirmations and self reflection, we identify our thought patterns that aren't serving us and letting go of it will only get easier with time. We can't just fall into tranquility by being in turmoil or in excess happiness that's why its so important to detach ourselves from it. That helps us ease in and dissolve into it. Enlightenment as I understand it is when one has absolute clarity in non dualistic thought that it becomes choiceless. Like riding a bike, when we get the right balance, the thinking itself stops.

I remember seeing this video 1 to 2 years ago. The question that I have started raising in myself only a couple of weeks ago is what is tackled around the 8 minute mark: what is it in my current egoic experience that was also present or is common with my enlightenment experiences 2 - 3 years ago. The universe is truly a game of forgetting and re-awakening and when one awakens one sees it as The Perfect Game, The Perfect Show: you are as much in it (involved) as you are out of it (not affected at all by the involvement). The timing of rewatching this video comes at such a great time. That is also what I mean with the Perfect Game, it is all perfectly timed. I also had this feeling of “perfect timing” when I had my last (third) experience. I felt I had gone the distance, had gone through enough searching (in frustration), always in the wrong direction in my case, but here I Am Now … finally I found what I needed to find, so near, nothing can be more near than Reality (our real state). Nothing can be more Home than self realisation. Great to watch this video again and see how relevant this 8 minute section is to my own path. I am thankful for getting this confirmation. Life is experience but give attention to what experiences. That is all that is required to “get it”.

This reads like something I would type out and say. The timing thing (synchronicity) has been absurdly evident in excess in my life, more and more through this year after an incredible awakening, or whatever I can call it, at the end of last December. I’ve spent this entire year trying to dig deeper and deeper, going from one source to another trying to get more information, while not practicing the meditations and things I was being taught to do.. Falling in and out of strong connections. Thinking I’d lost it all, to turn a corner for synchronicity to hit me with impossibilities over and over again in short succession in the same days. It’s only become stronger and more often and impossible to deny as the months have gone on. Literal impossibilities mixed with perfect timings, etc. Yet, still I feel like I barely have a grip on any of it, and keep falling back into the exact same processes, etc. There’s too much to talk about, and my mind is always trying to organize or make sense of it all, but there isn’t enough room for all of it to process at the same time, and there are always too many rabbits to chase…. Anyways.. I’m only 9 minutes through this video, but I found your comment and wanted to reply to it. I’ll move on. Thanks for telling your experience for others to relate to. I’m enjoying this video. This guy is awkward, but it’s a good way to break into what many have trouble understanding. My viewpoints are very scientific, making it easier to understand how it’s all one, and I still struggle with his same issues.

Yes, there could be so many experiences that we can share in an attempt to explain our life story. Many years ago I experienced during a few years a few too obvious cases whereby I had pre-cognition. I would get an idea in my head (scientific stuff or a technology matter) and within 1-2 weeks I would read an article about it “comfirming” “my idea”. But this is all part of the illusory story that is our life. But as in your and in my case I see it as signs of awakening getting closer. I don’t see these pre-cognition (and other experiences I had) experiences as awakening itself, but definitely as early signs. I don’t think I really attempted to explain my awakening which I also like to express as a glimpse of Reality. But in truth I can’t express what Reality is, despite being able to express many non-dual experiences that came and went. So for me, I don’t claim that the non-dual experience of e.g. “all is one” or “I am All” or “I am nothing” and many other types of non-dual experiences is equal to the experience or the knowing of Reality. Reality is like something so evident while at the same time unknown. Reality is immediately a paradox (of experiences) as soon as we try to express it. So any attempt at trying to understand Reality, while one abides as Reality, is turned into a certain non-dual experience. Reality is something omnipotent while any attempt at expressing turns into an experience. But to return to what I wanted to say: when I had my last set of non-dual experiences, I also had the insight that nothing that I had ever done or experienced in my life were of any value in reaching the insight that my true nature is that of the timeless Reality. But when looked upon awakening from the point of view of the person (ego), there is the effort of trying to become enlightened. Everything that has happened to me, is seen as valuable (to the person) and non-valuable (to Reality). I may have interpreted your message incorrectly, but I got a little bit the impression that you had a very big experience but you seem to doubt it a little bit whether it is awakening. You don’t need to clarify if you don’t want to! But I can maybe illustrate it by showing the difference between my last two non-dual states. I will only mention two very specific insights I had in these two separate occasions: In my second experience I had the experience of seeing Reality (the real essence) in everything, every object around me. There was also the sense of “everything is me” or “everything is absolutely the same real thing/essence”. Strangely enough, this wasn’t as deep of an insight that I had during my last and third experience, which was that I finally knew that “I (but also all) is Reality”. I always tell people that non-dual experiences/insights can be or are sometimes soooo close and soooo specific, so one really needs to have a very specific non-expressible “OMG I am This/Reality” kind of experience to come to full understanding, if even for a limited time. That is where I (even as a person) know I got The Truth and I am 100% sure of it. No one, not even a permanent enlightened person can’t fool me and that enlightened person also doesn’t need to explain me the person is back “in me”. But every path can be vastly different from mine, but it ends in a non-describable knowing “I am That/Reality”. Maybe this wasn’t necessary to share, but feel free to ignore all this or continue this kind of exchange. I am available if you want. Peace

@@oerantia9126 This is why I wish there was a way to bookmark, or save, comment places so I can come back at a later time and really get in-depth after rereading and analyzing the whole. You are correct in your assessment of my experience to an extent, but there’s so much I’d like to respond with here. I don’t have the time right now, nor am I in the right frame of mind. Thanks for taking the time to be so elaborate, and I will try to come back very soon. I crave someone to speak with about these things I’ve been trying to grasp, and the experiences I’ve had, and continue to have, as they have increased over time, as my wisdom and knowledge has. We aren’t at all common.. and even those seemingly interested don’t have the understanding, or experience, or intellectual knowledge and desire to get very far without only regurgitating what they’ve been memorizing from KZbin channels. Thank you.. hopefully I’ll be back to this soon.

There's no one to forgive other than yourself by yourself to yourself. Awakening to the unconditionally ever-presently primary nature of what is aware to its existence (expression/life/content) is a bit like a light switch has been turned on - but not because what is aware turns it on, but because what is aware ceases holding it off. Contrary to belief, belief is not the only way for the switch to be turned on and kept on, but the only way to force the switch off and keep it forced off.

Those greatly deluded in realization are ordinary beings. Those who greatly realize delusion are enlightened beings. No one can ever be in an enlightenment “experience” all the time. Thats just an experience. Thats not enlightenment. When we assume thats enlightenment, we automatically assume that this “deluded” state isnt. Not trying to be hard on this guy. I have often felt that way myself. Sometimes the best thing you can do is just let go of those experiences. You find that holding on to them wasnt keeping you from loosing anything. This experience right here is just as real.

I found self realization or enlightenment and it stayed for a long time, it was permanent it seemed, but i lost all earth desires and one i missed was lust... I could no longer feel anything i kept trying to peek back into the ego and not being able too. I then questioned is it worth it, was it worth it. To me it felt like ok so ive achieved but nothings changed lol ... It has and it hasnt but to me living the rest of my life in that state felt awful.. i resented it .. So yesterday i felt i lost it, but hey i got my libido back lol.. I felt like i couldve stayed there but i wouldve literally had to live a life like a monk. I have a family i cant just wonder of into some mountains have a sexless life doing nothing but meditating praying and being peaceful.. To me i think people lose it when the dobt do the work and desire worldly things, if your heart desires it, then you cant stay there. Its hard to actually desire it though whilst there i had to force and trick myself let put it that way. Im glad its shifted, cause unless i was going to become a teacher like this, a guru or a sage.. it was a pointless state and unreasonable state to stay in.. now i feel im back to normal except i dont need to be in that state whilst i was there im already reprogrammed, and understand how to be.. Unless youre a teacher or old age single i think to keep searching is silly... Once youve found stop seeking stop asking questions, once youve found you already know. Now we rewired and prepared how i see it.. I no longer seek anything i have no more questions, i know all i know and i also know somethings i will never know. Im ok with that lol

I don't know what to make of this. It's almost as if Adyashanti is consciously trying to humble and/or confuse the guy. His tone and choice of words reflect borderline annoyance and no effort to see or understand the other persons point of view. There are no questions, he lets the guy stand there in his uncertainty, not knowing what to do or say. It all seems very strange. If this is some sort of method of teaching, I do not understand it.

Agree. And I also sensed some superiority. Like the unenlightened questioner was left to flounder and ultimately drown in his confusion to affirm the teacher's sense of himself as being Enlightened. It does not convey True transcendence but a mind operating from duality.

I think it’s important to see that all the teacher sees is himself trying to convince himself that he’s a separate self. It’s like wearing a red hat and telling your teacher you don’t see the red hat although it’s super obvious and no question that there is 100% a red hat. It does no use to the student for the teacher to play along with this story of the separate self.
@DanBanan69
@DanBanan69 3 жыл бұрын
@@EdgarRamirez-so8ec That does not explain the teacher's tone and choice of words. In the situation with the red hat, the teacher should be comforting and supportive, and not annoyed and confusing. No matter how ignorant or "stupid" the student is, the teacher should always respond with understanding, because the teacher was once a student himself.
@EdgarRamirez-so8ec

@@DanBanan69 one time when I was in a very similar situation, I came to my teacher asking about self inquiry. And I had already had an awakening but I had “lost it”, when my teacher asked “who is it that thinks they lost clarity?” And I answered” well I don’t want to lie and say it’s awareness because right now I really feel like and Edgar” and he responded with “ooohhh you don’t want to lie to me? Okay” and the class started to laugh and then I understood his reply and I couldn’t stop laughing. “See you’re trying to convince us that you’re an Edgar, but you’re not trying to lie to us, I’m not gonna let you do that” and although he was very stern and had a very similar approach to Adya, it snapped me out of that neurotic though pattern. Sometimes you gotta get the zen Bitch slap.

@@EdgarRamirez-so8ec Good thing that worked in your situation. But such approaches are very dependent on minute details in the overall behavior of the person. Very small changes can make a person go from compassionate but stern to coming off as a douchebag. I see your point, but I still think adyashanti was unecessarily confusing and seemingly annoyed, and it did not seem to help the person in the video any.

"Everything about me is timeless.........Am I right?" The point is that it's just a concept. His reaching out for reassurance only proves it. Clearly, he's very uncertain, and has a lot of anxiety. One needs to go step-by-step into all the confusion, and drop "I was never born". These are not only concepts, but distractions from those tendencies which currently dominate his thinking. (Jiddu Krishnamurti's approach is very much on target.) A self-realized person would never ask "Am I right?".
