Our government needs to do better by our service members. They need to do better about education on mental health benefits and getting people easier access. Upon my return home from Afghanistan in May 2021 it took almost a year for them to get me and my buddies into “reintegration”. By that point, people could have died had they not been seen by a civilian physician. We need to do better. Serious kudos to these medics for the way they handled this. Used to work at a convenience store and had an older Vietnam vet who would come in to hang out most days for an hour or two. He'd stand around and converse or read his paper and greet customers. Every once in a while he'd come in looking disheveled and unkempt. Those days when the change machine would noisily dole out coins or someone jangled their car keys, he'd get down in a stance like the gentleman in the video, ghost gun pulled from its ghost holster, ready to take on an enemy. He liked to gather veterans together to go to funerals for other veterans who had little to no family. He passed away last week and seeing this video made me miss him that much more, for we have so much work to do when it comes to caring for our mentally worn down veterans. The Veterans Administration has ruled that service dogs have not been shown to help Vets with PTSD. Therefore, only a handful of Vets get dog from the VA. It's B.S. I know, it's a $$$ thing since trained Service Dogs are expensive.

@@jonnwray960 the only vets that get service dogs usually are blind or deaf from service, or they were severely wounded during service
@jonnwray9603 жыл бұрын
@@joeswansonthesimphunter2612 Sorry Joe, that's not a 100% correct. Yes, blind, deaf vets get service dogs thru the VA, the VA contracts with a legit service dog training group near it's medical facility. The same goes for seriously wounded vets as well as you mentioned. For years, the VA has claimed that their was no evidence that service dogs were any help to the disabled. The real story is that the V.A. didn't want to spend the approximately $25K per trained dog. Just recently, Congress grew tired of the V.A.'s B.S. and ordered the V.A. to immediately supply vets with dogs. There is a program that has been a huge success for the vets. In some prisons, inmates can volunteer, and if selected, are matched up with a dog to teach the dog to be a service dog for a vet. It is a win-win-win situation. First, the dogs come from county/city pounds, humane shelters, rescue shelters, etc. So the dogs get a 2nd chance at life, they will be well cared for in a new home, and they will have a job to perform..........dogs are happy when they can work. Next, the disabled vet gets a dog, trained suited to their needs and disabilities. Then, the inmate..........he/she gets a rewarding task to perform. The dog is with them 24/7, the inmate feeds, trains, plays, sleeps with the dog. The inmate learns responsibility, a skill that can transfer to the outside world. The V.A. wins, only a handful of staff will be needed at each prison. The staff will be needed to train the inmates on how to train the dogs, how to care for the dogs physically, supervise the program, purchase and distribute supplies, and make progress reports to the V.A. I know a great deal about the service dog issue.......I have a service dog, and I was lead to her by the V.A.
@derekv85342 жыл бұрын
@@jonnwray960 also need to point out the stipulations to qualify for a service dog are pretty extreme. The veteran has to be verifiable clean and sober for atleast one year. The veteran has to have their own home or live with someone who has been designated as a caregiver. If the veteran has a history of suicidal thoughts they must be deemed to no longer be any threat to themselves. The list goes on, which sadly drives away applicants.

I hate sentiment like this. I'm a grunt and I know pogs who been through more than some grunts. In the infantry anything can happen to anybody...combat role or support. And even outside of the infantry. Mortor IDF on a FOB can have people pretty messed up as well...that happened several times during GWOT bro.

I worked with a gentleman at a dominos (he is a delivery driver doesn’t need the job does it for fun) but he was a ranger in the army got out after I think ten year and he has ptsd and he is a recovering drug addict and when we would talk sometimes he would drift off in a story because of the stuff going through his head. I have so much respect for those in the military because of my family members who have been in and because I shall be a service member after I graduate college. Thank you to all service members we don’t do enough for you guys

Thank you for including non-veterans in your comment. I'm not a Vet, but about 1½ years ago I was in a rollover car accident and suffered a TBI. As a result of the accident I now struggle with PTSD. Before my accident I'd heard about PTSD and flashbacks, but I never really understood what it meant or what it involved. I didn't understand how vivid and real feeling a flashback could be. Thankfully my episodes are becoming less frequent, but during particularly bad ones it takes over all my senses and it truly seems like I'm back in the middle of my accident. The first time I had a flashback it was terrifying. Mine is only from a car accident, I can't even imagine what these veterans are going through. I'm exhausted right now after going through a particularly bad episode this evening that was triggered by seeing a really bad rollover crash so fresh that no police or EMS had had a chance to respond yet even though the fire station was only 2 blocks away. I'm glad I have a better understanding of PTSD, I just wish I could have learned about it a different way.
