AEF NADC Eagle Nest 2021: What's Gotten Into TFL?

This great video pop up in my feed & of course I had to watch it again … I remember this & we nest watcher’s were really excited about this season starting . seeing TFL getting interested in the nest again then, poof she was gone 😢no fighting that we know of ,no reports of injury it was a huge blow… Thankfully Mr. P has attracted a new beautiful mate ( Lotus) & and she was a great 1st time mom.

Thank you for your question. I am an AEF Volunteer and part of the NADC Eagle Cam team. A leg band is almost the only way to be 100% positive on an ID. Lacking that, we look for identifying marks. Some of TFL’s marks are: a two-toned beak (darker at the front), indentations on the top of the cere, creases along the back edge of the upper beak, a thin black line along one of her tail feathers, and speckles in her eyes. We will also look for behavioral clues, like how she interacts with MrP. Have we ever been wrong? Of course, nobody’s perfect, but we make every effort to get it right and have even corrected ourselves when further review proved our initial ID incorrect. As far as whether this bird is the real TFL, our 15 team members all agree this is her. Thanks for watching.

Hi Rhonda. This nest is constantly being monitored. Mr. P and V5 make daily visits to the nest and have been mating often. Since V5 appears to be a 4th-year eagle, we don't know if she is mature enough yet to reproduce. Full maturity is considered reached at 5-years, but it's not unheard of for a 4th-year female to lay eggs. We have an Event Log for this nest that is updated daily with the comings and goings. It is currently a continuation of the 2020 log until our new website is ready.
