this *is* actually practical, with a matrix display you wouldn't get these nice diagonal lines which help a lot with legibility

i don't totally get the point, i mean it has very nice aesthetics, but using a 5x7 dot matrix would've been just way more simple

I think style and aesthetics was the purpose, so they don't have to rely on things like a full pixel display

Since this was made by a railway, my guess is that they needed big text with really good readability, which you lose when you scale up low resolution matrices. They needed text that could be easily read close up and from a distance. Now another solution was to scale up the matrix display to 11x15 for example, but then you get even more segments and still worse readability for diagonal segments. It was probably just the cheapest option with best readability. Again, it's just a theory

Just like 25 segmeted displays it can display the letter “þ” capacle of showing captal and original lowercase letter “þ”

Not sure how useful this always is. I don;t think I’ve ever seen this is in person. It’s mostly in Europe best I can tell, with a few American systems using it as well.
