I have to recommend getting the proper tool for certain tasks. Snap ring pliers, jaw pullers, manual impact driver, sandblaster, soft jaws for the vice, a way to mount and hold spinning items for sanding, etc. I only say this because naming your channel "the restoration guy" would imply some level of expertise or professionalism, but there were a lot of shortcuts and questionable methods used in this video.
@TheRestorationGuy
@TheRestorationGuy 4 жыл бұрын
I cannot contradict that I am really not fully professional equipped . But I'm trying to change that for future projects. Because of my name, which is really funny, I thought it sounded more like an amateur than a professional . Thank you for your recommendations. I really appreciate that you take the trouble to list everything that needs improvement.
@ixamraxi
@ixamraxi 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheRestorationGuy No problem, no one has all the tools right away when they first start out. ( I didn't know how new you were at this) With respect to the name, i think using "the" in front is what implies some measure of authority, as it implies you've been doing this a long time and have established a reputation as being "the restoration guy". The list I gave is by no means exhaustive, its just the tools that would have made this particular restoration much easier on you, and more professional. Since its ultimately a tool for personal use, its not that big a deal really, but if you were doing the restoration for a customer... It could be worthwhile to have a short disclaimer at the beginning of your video, or in the video description at least, explaining that you are still a novice at some of this, or at least not a professional restoration expert, so they aren't expecting more than you can give, while you are learning the craft. Thank you for taking the recommendation in stride, with humility and grace. You get a thumbs up from me. Cheers!

25:50 Your earth chassis connection is not good. You need to use a split washer above the cable end (to keep pressure always) and a star washer below, for a good electrical connection, Scrape the paint around the screw until you see metal. The way you have it, vibrations will make it get loose over time. Loved the video, hope you get another 30 years of use of this grinder!

Nice video, nice work...but PLEASE get some tools! Those old fashioned wood shaft screwdrivers seem to be the best you have. The socket wrench and the spanner? From the chrome shine I guess its super market crap. Good tools usually do not shine (but not-shiny tools arent neccessarily good tools). The wire pliers? Throw it right away! The worn out screws? Throw them! I guess they are all standard screws. Don't clamp screws or threads in the vise without protective cheeks. Do not sand or paint machined surfaces! Not so important at this device but as a rule of thumb. Please, this is not an offense, I appreciate all the effort and time you spent to creat content for the people out there.

Subbing. There are a few things that I didn't enjoy and I leave here for you to consider: Using the vice to secure the screw, without any protection to not damage the treads. Not using a proper tool to remove the circlip and finally, the type of paint. If you had used hammerite metal paint the end result would have been awesome. And I guess you know this, you really need a sandblaster, even if just because of the mesmerizing effect that it makes when people watch something being sandblasted. :)

well, loving restoration, but hardly usable for proper operation. With a "Steinmetz circuit" (three-phase motor operated with capacitor and 1 phase supply) you lose more than 30% power and the starting torque drops to a few lousy percent. You can also see in your video how long the rotor takes just to get going. With minimal load, it immediately loses speed and just because you have a fairly large flywheel mass here, it happens a little more slowly. Nicely done restoration, but the motor needs a 3-phase supply and no Mickey Mouse replacement.

Love it, but when you replaced the power lead, the earth lead should be the *longest* wire so that if the cable gets pulled out, the equipment (and you) are protected as long as possible. Love your work!

Woodruf key? / I shall refrain from using the phrase butchery. Circlip pliers can be sourced very cheaply. Pullers can also be sourced quite cheaply - you have some already and you know what they are - there is no need to engage in such crude practices when suitable tools are available.

Enjoy all your videos, but on this one, I caught myself wincing a few times. First, when you removed the paint from the inside of the grinder; second when you began using filler on that amazing texture on the surface; third when you selected a colour other than original (which was so great). Like I said, great videos, but my 2 cents on these few details. Keep up the great work.

Good to hear. Most people don't like the paintwork. The problem is that hammerite doesn't have the largest selection. I thought the vintage green would fit well and of course I have to prime for the spray paint. But thanks for your criticism, I probably have to stick to the original color more in the future.

22:34 why do you use pliers for crimping, when at 23:18 you use a crimp tool? Pliers will result in an improper cold weld and air in the joint, eventually leading to corrosion and failure.

Degrading a proper Drehstrom (three-phase) motor to the amateur single phase existence by a defiling capacitor. Not ok. If you're starved for real power, upgrade your workshop to a Real Workshop, where machines are three-phase, like Tesla intended. And if you are going to jury-rig it anyway, those lugs are for spade connectors, not half-cold solder joints that still are going to heat the poor capacitor beyond its rating. OTOH, might as well have soldered, since most spade lugs are crimped, and a linesman plier is not a suitable crimper for that application. Finally, where is the strain relief? You can't go putting a thin three-core cable in there where there used to be a proper 2,5mm^2 4-core cable without fitting a properly sized strain relief. As rebuilt, the cable is flapping about and will put stress on internal connections , especially since it is now a movable appliance and not a fixed installation as it was intended to. The thread for the strain relief is most likely Panzerrohrgewinde and those still are readily available. Nice outer finish, though, and all those things. As with most restorations on the tube, it's form over function. The use of pop rivets for the Typenschild is a pretty degrading thing, though. There are proper rivets available.

Agree, a motor designed for three phase should powered by three phase . With the so called "Steinmetz Schaltung" the motor lose 30% torque . If there are 3 phase available in the building I would install new cables and suitable sockets to run the gear. There are lot of good old Industrial machines for little money which all of them want 3 phases. So it is a good investition to wire the shop up. If non 3 phase power available, the better way to run it on single phase would be a VFD, offered always pricely on ebay. The capacitor seems to small, the motor need to much time to run up. The rule of thump say 70 µF per kilowatt motor output power (230V mains) There was a bad idea to remove the internal wiring diagram , I would made a photograph before I done it. The grinder is probably made at the end of the 50th or the beginning of the 60th

Hi Restoration Guy. Great video! If you add a line that says 0:00 Introduction to the start of your list of timestamps, the timestamps will show as true chapters within the video. Also moving those motor end bells involves moving the shaft within the bearing - so it makes it much easier to to clean the shafts as much as possible of rust before doing that. Cheers, Craig

That restoration is really good... great second life for that machine and it will probably still last longer than anything you buy at the hardware store now. Just one point: The run up is too slow, even for a capacitor circuit. The motor draws A LOT of current during this phase and might get damaged soon because of that. During opweration the rotation makes counter induction to limit the current flow. But when rotation is low for too long - like here - the windings can quickly overheat. Your capacitor is too small for the motor power. Use 70uF per kW. And make sure your motor is wired in triangle (which I think you did, but I won't rewatch now.). I'm not yet sure if I like the filler to make a baby butt smooth casing. Scratches and dents in such machines are honorable battle scars, that make part of the feeling working with vintage machinery. It sure looks nicer, but it's not "true"... What I don't like is your electrical work. Soldering the leads to the capacitor is botch work. Get a pair of crimping pliers and do it right.

For most parts of this video, “never do like this” comments should be provided(bolt in vise gripped by thread - omg). Not good paint quality as result a lack of filler. The lack of a lathe is very noticeable in such work too. Destroying the schematic inside instead of restoring it is a very *very* bad practice. Enough but not good.
