Working with a friend (who had a lot more confidence than me) we stripped out the busted gearbox of a heavy old Holbrook lathe, to repair the reversing mechanism. It did not use many ball races, just bronze bearings all over the system. The solidified grease and oil was older than either of us. In order to do all this we had to remove the belt drive system, in it's heavy cast casing. That part alone was over 200Kg. We managed to fix the bodged up parts and get it all working again, as intended. It is still a good lathe with a taper turning attachment and reversing on the fly. It is amazing how solid and well made these old tools are. Once they are cleaned, with fresh bearings, they work like new.

Hi Restoration Guy. Great video! If you add a line that says 0:00 Introduction to the start of your list of timestamps, the timestamps will show as true chapters within the video. Also moving those motor end bells involves moving the shaft within the bearing - so it makes it much easier to to clean the shafts as much as possible of rust before doing that. Cheers, Craig

So we regularly witnessed huge motors, some approaching 1000 Kg arriving, some burned out and being stripped and rebuilt It was fascinating. 25:50 Your earth chassis connection is not good. You need to use a split washer above the cable end (to keep pressure always) and a star washer below, for a good electrical connection, Scrape the paint around the screw until you see metal. Subbing. There are a few things that I didn't enjoy and I leave here for you to consider: Using the vice to secure the screw, without any protection to not damage the treads. Not using a proper tool to remove the circlip and finally, the type of paint. If you had used hammerite metal paint the end result would have been awesome. And I guess you know this, you really need a sandblaster, even if just because of the mesmerizing effect that it makes when people watch something being sandblasted. :)
@TheRestorationGuy4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much and thank you for your constructive criticism. Yes, because of the screws and the locking ring, I agree that I could have done better. I am also a fan of Hammerit. The problem is that they have a limited range of colors. Because of the sandblaster, I still have to see how I can organize it from the squareof my workshop is already pretty full, but yes, people love it and I think I will get one in the future because removing the paint is always annoying.

I have to recommend getting the proper tool for certain tasks. Snap ring pliers, jaw pullers, manual impact driver, sandblaster, soft jaws for the vice, a way to mount and hold spinning items for sanding, etc. I only say this because naming your channel "the restoration guy" would imply some level of expertise or professionalism, but there were a lot of shortcuts and questionable methods used in this video.
@TheRestorationGuy4 жыл бұрын
I cannot contradict that I am really not fully professional equipped . But I'm trying to change that for future projects. Because of my name, which is really funny, I thought it sounded more like an amateur than a professional . Thank you for your recommendations. I really appreciate that you take the trouble to list everything that needs improvement.
@ixamraxi4 жыл бұрын
@@TheRestorationGuy No problem, no one has all the tools right away when they first start out. ( I didn't know how new you were at this) With respect to the name, i think using "the" in front is what implies some measure of authority, as it implies you've been doing this a long time and have established a reputation as being "the restoration guy". The list I gave is by no means exhaustive, its just the tools that would have made this particular restoration much easier on you, and more professional. Since its ultimately a tool for personal use, its not that big a deal really, but if you were doing the restoration for a customer... It could be worthwhile to have a short disclaimer at the beginning of your video, or in the video description at least, explaining that you are still a novice at some of this, or at least not a professional restoration expert, so they aren't expecting more than you can give, while you are learning the craft. Muchas felicidades ¡¡¡

I got same set of hex keys. It's great way to keep all main sizes together. Easy to use for tight bolts and of extra good quality. Made in West Germany. That don't make those today. Looking better I think your is not absolutely same is mine. You have 3 lines of texts I got 4. Is it last line W-Germany?
