He’s so easy to dislike, but he’s actually such a nuanced character as well. Look at his life as we’ve seen. Constantly doubted, overlooked, and forgotten. Then, he pairs with Vhagar and feels like he belongs, finally finding a dragon, and one of the strongest at that. Then, as he said to Cole, he was the one who took his position as a successor seriously, while aegon didn’t. And he took it personally he was never even considered by his mother or father. I believe him acting the way he does, is him lashing out for never receiving the love his siblings had. He’s desperate to prove his worth when he already has. But few to none acknowledge it and I think that makes him internally angry. He wants validation and has never gotten it, so he chooses to rule from fear rather than gaining respect from his steadfastness and intellect.

@MegaAvalonn2 ай бұрын
He's a classic case of the forgotten and overlooked middle child, who works very hard to achieve everything he has sought out for. He was also bullied, even by members of his own family, because puberty came to him later than most. Add this all up, along with the fact he has the temptation of using the largest and frankly meanest dragon of the age, and it's easy to see how he ended up this way... He's a tragic villain.
@marydetrevil8272 ай бұрын
I think many people forget the fact that Aemond didn’t expect Aegon to appear in Rook’s Rest. So it wasn’t his plan to steal the throne from Aegon by burning him. The important thing about Aemond is that he is still dutiful and does so much to win this war. As you said he had no path, no purpose as a second son before and war became the space where he could prove himself. He was patient and dutiful for all his life, containing all the rage he had inside. He went through unfair things yet he accepted them. And now we just see how he started to lose his temper, this rage starts to overwhelm him. First with Luke, although he didn’t mean to actually kill him in series. Then with Aegon and Sharp Point, and then with Helaena. With Aegon I see it like Aegon was interfering Aemond’s strategy that he created carefully. Adding all the humiliation Aemond had from Aegon before it just made him lose his temper once again. And with Helaena he was just desperate and for reason, as he said now they were in such circumstances that their very lives were in danger. Love the character and the actor 🥰

@philzh79732 ай бұрын
Shamelessly copying and pasting my comment from another video but Aemond is my favorite character in HoTD. He might be Daemon’s counterpart but there’s something more than just that comparison. He’s the quintessential Targaryen Prince-a skilled warrior riding the largest dragon in the world. Everything he has, he fought for it. Suffered for it. And while that has made him unbelievably powerful, it’s left something bitter in his heart. A hatred that burns like dragon fire beneath the skin, and now it’s burning everything else around him. Then, when you get those rare moments of reflection with him, you feel sorry for him. Fuckin’ A, you feel sorry for all of Alicent’s children.

They play scary music and people think "that's the baddie!". As if we haven't seen Rhaenys crush dozens of civilians at the Dragon Pit, as if Rhaenyra isn't starving the people of Kings Landing with her blockade, as if she didn't feed dozens to Vermithor just to gain new weapons. Virtually all of his actions have been correct so far. - Takes out an enemy dragon rider (an army unto himself) who was recruiting armies for an enemy Queen. And he didn't even do it on purpose. - Takes out his incompetent, rapist alcoholic King. (This is actually hos worst move as it cost him his only other dragon) - Takes out the enemies greatest dragon. - Removes the rat catcher corpses. Propaganda win. - Tightens dock security after the enemy has executed TWO successful plots using boats. He should have done this sooner and would have denied the enemy two more riders. - He is finally attacking enemy stronghold. Again, his sin here was restraint. Should torch Riverrun, the Vale and Winterfell as well. He inherited a war, he did not start it. Just wait until these people learn how WW2 was won and how many cities we burned. That is how war is fought. None of the power players are good people.

Great point. Why bother trying when you already fully understand your father wants his eldest daughter, the realm’s delight, to succeed him, not Aegon. It could have been on purpose in rebellion. They mention Aegon having shorter more unkempt hair because he isn’t all that concerned with being a Targaryen in the first place.
@seth_fitzgerald2 ай бұрын
The only two things that I find interesting, and very telling about his character is that he claimed the largest and most powerful dragon that was only to cover the void insecurity and helplessness. That’s the reason why he sought Vhagar out because she represented the power he craved. He definitely does look up to his uncle and he wants to be like him also can’t help but feel like he wants to replace his uncle Daemon. Both him and Daemon both they’ve had negative feelings towards the older brother, but the difference is that Daemon didn’t even want to challenge his brother for the throne and take it from him while Aemond not only challenged his brother, he took his place temporarily. Yes, he thought himself to be invincible when there was no other dragon that could challenge him, but he knows that they are three dragons that can challenge him and defeat him: Vermithor, Silverwing, and Caraxes. And I also believe this is an overthinking mistake on his part he thought that by claiming the powerful dragon would make everyone fear him, but all it did was put a massive on his back because twice in season two that has always been the case since first episode and the last episode.

He certainly looked up to Daemon, there was a sense of pride that he was the assassination target of Blood and Cheese. I also think he's angry at himself now that the Blacks have 3 new riders as he intentionally took down one of their dragons, so they are weaker due to his actions as well.

While Aemond definitely has elements of cruelty, narcissism and an inferiority complex, I think his aggressive traits are heightened when he's on Vhagar. That dragon has done some pretty messed up stuff in the past, and when a mind prone to leaning into his aggressive nature is atop her it only fuels Aemond onto even greater brutality.

Aemond is by FAR my most favorite character so them butchering his whole character this season I don't think I am a fan of. They really just flip flopped he and Daemon. The entirety of season 1 we get a really well rounded, insecure, bullied middle child who still actually has personality and really just wants to fit into this whole crazy as$ situation he is born into. Season 2 : We get an angry kill-bot, bully, who only wants power and the throne at any cost guy even to the point of threatening Healana which he literally has NEVER DONE while simultaneously everyone else, except Jace, gets to be good now; okay whatever. I hope they deepen his arc moving forward because the direction he has been taken in season 2 is stupid imo. They better throw in some magic manipulation of the dragon or his bond to justify this character assassination or it could be very disappointing for true fans. I am also displeased with the whole situation of Aemond being called Kinslayer and Daemon isn't?? Does having a small child butchered in bet not also count in this universe or have I missed something? Great video- cheers folks!

U said Aegon was a spoiled brat because the throne was birthright but firstly Rhaenyra was heir not him and secondly he never neither wanted the throne nor to rule ..
@Syndra29382 ай бұрын
Their laws state that first son rules so even though Rhae was named, his claim was also valid in a strong way which was more explored in the book. There’s a reason why the Greens got support. I think he didn’t want it BECAUSE he was neglected by his father and it only made it worse knowing he was overlooked by his father as his successor since his birth. The carriage scene before his coronation makes it pretty obvious why he is the way he is. He never felt good enough. Children not being loved properly can do crazy things, which is why the green siblings are so poorly adjusted. This is why they hold resentment for Rhae and her children. They are the “golden children.” Aegon is the scapegoat child, and Aemond is the lost child. These are psychological terms. A symptom of scapegoat child syndrome is self-sabotage. They don’t feel worthy of love or admiration, so they act like it.

@Katie-id8lxАй бұрын
@@Syndra2938 Thanks for the confirmation that you haven't grasped the law. So let me explain... You may read this and think: there was obviously a son, Aegon II, so Rhaenyra can't inherit the throne. But I'm talking about Rhaenyra being named heir in 105 AC, 2 years before Aegon the Elder was born. At that point Daemon Targaryen, believed himself to be heir. But he made jokes about 'heir for a day' which led to viserys declaring his daughter heir and Princess of Dragonstone. Since Aegon was born, it seems simple right? Now a son was born to inherit instead of Rhaenyra. And when choosing a heir, the male child should always be put first in line of succession. Aegon would actually be the rightful heir, except... Viserys had already named Rhaenyra his heir, which changes everything. The same law also forbade a man to disinherit the children by the first wife in order to bestow their lands, seat and property on to a later wife's children. So since Rhaenyra, the child of the first wife can't be disinherit in order to bestow aegon as heir, Rhaenyra was still the rightful heir when King Viserys died and became Queen Rhaenyra.
@Syndra2938Ай бұрын
@@Katie-id8lx obviously a lot of people dgaf about that law or else things never would’ve ended how they did, if Viserys wanted her as queen he shouldn’t have had a bunch of kids that could threaten her claim in the first place, as well as putting those 4 kids in a position of possibly being executed by Rhae or Daemon to solidify it because he ended up having THREE sons which would’ve typically made her like fifth in line after Daemon. His poor decisions and Otto’s manipulation will forever be the root cause of the dance.
