I was wondering what he was planning to do with it as well, I got my own ginkgo from a nursery, but I want to see what Nigel will do with his own ginkgo before doing anything too drastic. They put out aerial roots, too but it takes more than a human lifetime to do so usually.

Both my Willow trees died this year, they were growing weakly in spring and then when the hot weather hit, they both died. I think the roots must have died over the winter, it did get cold very early last year. I'll have to grow more Willows, as I do miss them already!

The tree on the plank it growing slowly, but well. The roots haven't been spreading out as much as I had hoped this summer, I'm not sure why, maybe too much water? I'll be making a video on this tree soon and possibly starting another plank project with the Kapok trees.

Hello, I would like your opinion, I made a air layering in a pine tree native to my area, it is working, but it has little root. Do you think I should put it in the pot now at the end of that month, or wait for next spring? I am afraid to leave for next spring, and the harsh winter from where I live, will kill the roots because this air layering is in nature.

Nigel...I’d like to purchase a bonsai to start with on again. Where do you suggest getting one from? I live near Myrte Beach, SC The local stores are out now such as Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc. I’m not sure about ordering one ? Where would I get one? Also, I have a few tools. You’re inspiring me to start again. I’m home bound and this looks like a perfect thing for me.

Hey Nigel, i love your garden and works. Im very excited about willow bonsai, i want to grow one also if i can find some tree for air layering =) By the way is there any possibility that maybe you can share your 3d Printed pots' files for us to try changing some parts and print. My friend has 3d printer and when i heard it, i was very excited about this idea. Because i dont know how to use that programs i thought maybe you want to share it or at least suggest anything for that. =) Maybe after that we can send you our painted 3d pots and you can show them on your footages.. =) just an idea =) Thanks anyways.

Have you ever tried using 100% perlite as a bonsai soil? Just wondering if it would work or if it would be too light?
@TheBonsaiZone6 жыл бұрын
It would work well as a soil, but it would be too light to hold the tree in the pot. If you wired the tree in place and put moss on top of the perlite to stop it blowing away in the wind,i think it would work!

Now I know why my ficus die after pruning :-) I cut the branches too hard Do u save rain water for future use for ur plants. If yes plz can u show us how u save that much water. And is there any specific way of rain water saving?
@TheBonsaiZone6 жыл бұрын
Yes, we collect the rain water in 7 barrels. It usually gets us through the dry spells. My wife uses the water for her chickens, ducks and the garden. We did run dry this summer and had to use tap water for two days, but then the rain came again and re filled all the barrels. The barrels can last us about a month and a half. Ficus trees can be fussy at times!

Could you do a video on the equipment you would need to successfully grow a bonsai tree please?
@TheBonsaiZone6 жыл бұрын
You really only need a pair of pruners, a root rake (you can make one from a fork) a nursery pot and some bonsai soil. You can make your own bonsai soil using local ingredients. As you get more experienced, you can slowly collect more tools, but you don't need many to begin with!

@brainlessnymph6 жыл бұрын
Also how often should you prune/repot?
@TheBonsaiZone6 жыл бұрын
If you want to develop a good root base, I would re pot every year or two. It does depend on the species of tree, maples do need to be re potted every year or the tree will become root bound the second year. The longer you go without re potting, the more your roots can go out of balance and grow in a strange direction. If the tree is weak and hasn't grown much, then I would skip re potting for that year. Re potting and root pruning should only be done on a tree that is growing with lots of vigor. Re potting a weak tree may kill it. There are lots of exceptions to these guidelines, but generally, when the roots fill the pot, it's time to re pot!
