Nigel! I've been watching your videos for about 3months, it's better than binge-watching any tv show on Netflix, thank you for all your videos, I've learned so much from you, got a few bonsai trees starting out already haha I watch your videos with my 2 year old daughter, she's always like "woooow" You stand out from other bonsai channels because you're very down to earth and you're very descriptive when you work with your trees. I've learned a lot from you, including how to properly water your tree, soil composition, clip and grow among others. Thank you again!! My favorite plant is the portulacaria Afra and many people say it can't be a bonsai, but you prove other wise. Very encouraging! I got a couple cuttings of it growing now.

I've never seen a sabre leaf ficus before, but I'm guessing that that's where the willow leafs derived from. They look almost identical in their growth habit. Their leaves look to be identical as well, only smaller. That's strange the way that one trunk died back. Almost like a benjamina would do. Looking good Nigel as always. Thanks for the video.

@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
I don't do that much because, I don't want people to think it's a before and an after type hobby. The tree doesn't always look better after the work is done on it. Most of the work done to the tree doesn't make sense until many years later. I do prefer to show the trees progression in years rather than a before and after in each video.
@KnorbenKnutsen5 жыл бұрын

Have you ever tried putting a flat rock below the center of the tree? I am very much a beginner in bonsai but it seem like a good idea to promote radial root growth.
@markmondrinos77216 жыл бұрын
Great roots on that hibiscus! Definitely not by accident. Can you defoliate the bougs? That forest would be perfect with a fresh set of tiny leaves. I think that miniature forest planting would be a great accent for a larger bonsai in exhibition - like the deciduous grove down in the valley below the rugged conifer growing on the mountain.
@andrewspar4366 жыл бұрын
I never had a tree die on me because of the sun. However, the indoor-leaves are burnt quickly, but are replaced by new growth that deals well with the sun. Therefore, I usually defoliate before taking those plants out, which works really well.
@TheBonsaiZone6 жыл бұрын
Yes, this can be a good method, it will sometimes kill off the tender tips of the branches.

Hey Nigel now are you? I wonder if u have any ideas what is going on with my boganvilia, it was started from a small cutting about 10 months ago, i repotted it about 2 months after it struck from cutting and being new to bonsai/inpatient i trunk chopped below first branch and pruned roots fairly heavily, prob only left four roots. Since then it has gone reasonably well but not great, it still wobbles a bit in pot and trunk still really skinny. It is winter over here in queensland but still 20 to 25 degrees and at the moment it has only 2 or 3 green leaves but prob 20 pink flower leaves? Any ideas? Im thinking it might still be trying to get some good roots goin hense top growth being less strong?
@uploadedpipi27816 жыл бұрын
michael whyte I don't know a lot but we have seen Nigel cut off cones and if I remember right some flowers of trees to keep their focus on growing branches and roots. Maybe you should cut off the flowers too (just an idea)
@ericbrown47616 жыл бұрын
michael whyte remove the flowers and it will put the energy it has available to it to grow roots and vegetation. Be patient with it, as it sounds like it may be struggling a little, but it will rebound once you remove the flowers.

Do you reuse the soil
@TheBonsaiZone4 жыл бұрын
I usually don't, I find new soil works better than old soil. The old soil can have weeds and I find the particles get a layer of algae on the outer surface and they don't hold water and fertilizer as well. I will reuse it if I find I have run out of soil or if I'm potting up a less important plant. The old soil gets mixed in with the garden soil and reused that way.
