Dakota talks to Rusty about his tandem seat Aeronca Champ. Its a classic and capable airplane although not very fast. The design was based extensively on the iconic Piper J3 cub and many improvements were made to the airframe.

Dakota, you're doing a great job. Thank you !! I have time in both types. Champ is faster, Cub does better acro. Either is better than driving!

Nice demo Dakota. What a great little plane. Flying from the back must have been a trip as, like you said, you couldn't see the instruments. However, Rusty did say you didn't need 'em. I'm not a pilot, but my Dad flew. Life got in the way of my ambition to fly and now I have AMD so I won't be able to in my lifetime. I enjoy watching and listening to you fly. Thank you Dakota.

Dakota, you are missed on Sailing Doodles, but it's obvious you are in your element here. Your competence is evident, and it makes you fun to watch. I hope you enjoy this, and develop it to its full potential. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Looking forward to much more in '24. Thank you for being here.

I've got several hrs on the venerable Airnoker--back in college days I was lucky enough to rent an Aeronca from an infamous Tx A&I math professor, many years ago....his pal old Bulldog Mayhew checked me out on the A/C for free, and I put in a number of X-country hours on the plane for $$6.00 / Hour (this was back in the early 60's, when JFK was still alive)....the proff was alt Doc Perry and was famous for having a Circular Pool Table. I've flown numerous A/C, including several PA-11s , an old 1938 J-5, and my own Smith DSA Biplane, but the Champ was a great roomy, large windscreen 90 mph aircraft. I wouldn't get close to a J-3. My aunt used to be married to a guy that was a cropduster. They had a champ and a 172 back in the day. I got to fly in both of them back in the late 70s or early 80s. But that champ definitely was a memorable flight for a kid like me, Awesome flying low over the family farm and seeing wildlife in the fields from a bird's eye view. Good memories!

My flights in a J3 were some of the most memorable. From joyrides with a fellow A&P, to scenic flights over Alcatraz in San Francisco (circa 1970). They were far better than my flights over Afghanistan searching for bad guys.

@@chetmyers7041 Three letter agency. My friends called it the “Alphabet” agency. ISpent three years there, doing everything from rescuing innocent kidnapped civilians on the ground to detecting and directing fires on meetings of very, very, very bad guys (from a C-12 ISR) and putting warheads on foreheads and reducing them to hair balls, teeth and eyeballs. It all started when I was young learning to fly on a little grass strip (Colts Neck, N.J.). It’s gone now, turned into a sub-division but I close my eyes and can smell the freshly moved grass and hear the landings (idling propellers slicing through crisp cool air) of other student pilots. It all started when I was a very young man.

I learned to fly a long time ago in a flying club that had three Champ 7AC planes and one J-3 Cub. I mostly flew the Champs but also had significant time in the J-3. I preferred the Champs because (1) you soloed from the front seat, (2) I thought the stick had a lighter feel, and (3) it cruised 5-10 mph faster than the J-3.

that thing needs a forward faceing camera out there in the nose, and an IPAD on the back of the front seat projecting that view and the HUD STUFF on the ipad.... or would that have to be done in an EXPERIMENTAL less rigid rules of adding stuff, THAT ONE not ''GA'' or wutever? :L)

You really ought to put shoulder harnesses in that thing. The regulations have been relaxed to make it easy to do. I have a 90 hp 7EC that I bought about 20 years ago. Great little airplane.

When I was working on my private pilot certificate in FL. We had a Camp at the school. I told my instructor I wanted to fly it. He said okay. I got three hours in it. I wish I did more, I loved the plane. I spent most of my time in the 150/152. But I would get a Champ.

There’s no objective answer to the Cub vs Champ argument. I’ve owned, one, and flown and instructed for hundreds of hours in both. The Champ’s ergonomics are better, but there is nothing like flying a Cub. Just head and shoulders above any airplane ever.

And if you don't like the tandem, they make the Chief. Id argue the champ is a better airplane than the cub in ever aspect other than public recognizability

Thank you, Dakota and Rusty. Flying a light aircraft in windy conditions was always a joy for me. crabbing in for a landing with your hand on the Throttle, expecting a gust to interrupt your flare. my Tiger cub was 600 lbs of excitement.
