Aerosmith - Painted On My Heart (Feb 2000 DEMO)

"Painted On My Heart," a song penned by Diane Warren, became the center of a unique story involving Aerosmith, a band well-known for hits like "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing." Initially, after their success with "IDWMAT," Diane Warren offered Aerosmith the song for the soundtrack of the 2000 Nicolas Cage movie "Gone in 60 Seconds." Columbia Records, planning to produce the soundtrack with Matt Serletic at the helm for Aerosmith's track, faced a sudden change when Aerosmith decided the song didn't align with their image, fearing being pegged solely as a ballad band. This was a particular concern given their history of criticism for "IDWTMAT" and their general avoidance of recording songs they hadn't written, barring covers.
The band stated they never recorded "Painted On My Heart," a claim partially substantiated by subsequent events. Industry speculation hinted at financial disagreements or label distribution conflicts as reasons for Aerosmith's version being axed from the film's soundtrack, which was then performed by The Cult and released under Island Records, despite The Cult not being affiliated with that label.
An Aerosmith demo version of the song did emerge, however, on a promotional CD-R acetate, hinting at a possible early recording. This demo, featuring Steven Tyler's vocals, presented a mellow and melodic tune distinct from The Cult's interpretation, with hints of Spanish Flamenco influences. Despite its raw, unpolished state, the demo showcased Tyler's unique harmonies and a different musical direction for Aerosmith.
The story took another twist with Steven Tyler's 2011 autobiography revelation, confirming Aerosmith did record the song, though whether a fully produced version featuring the entire band exists remains speculative. Tyler's account suggests at least a vocal recording was made, with the possibility of further production during the "Just Push Play" sessions.
Despite the controversy and the speculative nature of Aerosmith's full involvement, "Painted On My Heart" remains a notable piece in the band's history, representing a what-could-have-been moment in their storied career.

I believe Aerosmith could have had a No.1 Hit with this song as they did with I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing also written by Diane Warren. But Painted On My Heart Sounds and Feels much more like a Aerosmith song. I personally would have chosen this song over I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing If given the choice.

You can't buy it. Aerosmith recorded this song for the movie "Gone in 60 Seconds", and had Diane Warren help them, which they already worked with in "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing". Despite this demo being done for the movie, the people working on it wanted to see how another rock band, The Cult would make the song. And they chose The Cult's version over Aerosmith's version of this song. So sadly, there is no way to buy this version of the song :(

Actually, Aerosmith kinda didn't like to be known as a ballad band, so they didn't record the final version. But still, Steven gave this version to an AF1 member in Japan in order to leak it (together with Oxygen).

Totally agree. Thats why finally the oficial OST versión was recorded by The Cult. Ian Astbury's voice was way better tan Tylers for these furious/angry/melancholic song lyrics, meant to transmit the adrenaline of the movie plot.
