To me this song is Aes realizing that his Mom did the best she could with him and at some point you have to take responsibility for yourself. In the hook, the "then i let em go. OH." is that moment of realization.

"An amicable marooning." To 'maroon' someone is to abandon them. So an "amicable marooning" is two people deciding together to never see each other again.

This is the closing track on what I consider to be his masterpiece, 'Skelethon' (2012). :)

I think the song is about the disillusionment of family bonds -- realizing that families can drift apart as you age (and all that comes with that) but that, in the end, it's actually a natural process. The verses are from Aes's perspective as he describes the nuances of this realization: sadness, confusion, abandonment, etc. The choruses are metaphor's for his parent's perspective which is basically: "we raise you, we tell you you're good, and then we let you go to do your own thing." Note: there are always 3 animals in the chorus. Aesop has 2 brothers. Aka the chorus is the parent's perspective raising Aes and his brothers. This is all coupled with a brutally honest self-evaluation of Aes's own flaws as a person. Now, I'm not 100% positive about all of this but if you break down each verse line by line with that central theme in mind then it makes a lot of sense. Great breakdown for your first listen Saeed!

I got a bit of that, but didnt catcht the entire song was about that. Now with your info that makes much more sense. Especially the choruses! His pengame is top notch. Thanks for this one!

I think the choruses are a reference to putting himself in his parents' shoes when it came to him and his two brothers (hence the threes), and doing the only thing a parent can do for their young, which is encourage them and let them go. All three of them are incredibly successful people btw.

this and then the "oh" that follows is watching as the kids learn the world doesn't hold the same attitude towards them to me, anyway

@oaz8072 For me the whole song feels like a man growing out of/unlearning the old adolescent attitude of blaming your parents for x, y and z and taking accountability (in the last verse especially) for his life's problems. And the "Oh" just feels like him realizing his parents did exactly what they were supposed to.

@@bob2shred894 "and I forgot my spoon." Is also a line in it, which is where "0 for 1, I don't forget the spoon twice" comes from.

Greasy grimey gopher guts was on caddyshack, bill Murray's singing it. I heard it and asked someone about it. I think it's a boyscout chant/song. Or at least adapted to.
