Can you explain why them meters are better than a multimeter? As they do exactly the same thing.
@ollieb98753 ай бұрын
The multi in multi meter is a problem, for it could be set to measure the wrong thing.
@dsesuk3 ай бұрын
There are three differences between a multimeter and a voltage tester. 1: A multimeter requires batteries whereas a voltage indicator will continue to show the presence of voltage even if it does take batteries for other functions and even if those batteries are dead (some voltage indicators such as the Martindale and Drummond don't have batteries at all. 2: A multimeter could be set incorrectly and give a false reading of there being no voltage because it hasn't been dialled in to the voltage setting or scale correctly. Even where there are switches or settings on voltage indicators, they will always show voltage when put onto a live source. 3: Good voltage indicators will warn of a voltage present even if just one probe is connected which is useful where a neutral or earth may be missing. My TIS845 gives an audible and visual warning with just one probe on line whereas most multimeters will indicate nothing until both probes have a potential difference between them. That said, I do keep a CA757 multimeter on my hip and I use that as my go-to day to day because it has many functions and I like to think I know how to drive it. Nonetheless, when my NIC inspection comes around, I go back to my TIS845 because using a multimeter in front of my assessor would result in his use of the red pen and a failure of my assessment.

The tester doesn't work at all and if you don't follow procedures you touch some life stuff....... Same as using the multimeter but push the HOLD function before taking a measurement. Fudging idiots...

I was authorised to connect and energise 25kV and 750 vDC systems to trains in the test areas. Nothing to technical, just using the already installed switching gear and cables. When asked by newbies how they could test if the system was live my answer was always the same: "it's always live unless I say otherwise. We had some great safety rules at Litchurch Lane, but we needed them. Trains have 25kV, 750VDC, 110VDC, 240VAC, as well as Serial data, ethernet and wireless all in the same, conductive Aluminum shell. Some of the vehicle testing was fun, carrying out an insulation resistance check between carriages by pulling alternate carriages up onto rubber mats to isolate them from the steel rails. Same old Megger test kit though.

Very good, especially the continued smoking of the asses feet. It is true that the layman entrusts his life to a £5 quid Chinese multimeter. as i told the wife when she complained about me getting a £100 fluke T150 tester. Somethings you just need to buy. This is a bit patronising, but if you don't know why you need a proper voltage tester, probably shouldn't be "tackling" electrics. you need to read up on some stuff. Oh and by the way, you also need to get a multifunction tester, which cost a feck sight more. 🤣🤣🤣 and a torque screwdriver. and get an electrician, who is up to date on the current regs to eicr it for you. I have found the the electrician was not that costly and considering the paper work he gets done, well worth it. It would have taken me days to do all that, he had an app on computer🤣🤣
@dsesuk3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, the perception of 'electrician' is often that you just need some VDE screwdrivers and a good set of cutters. I suspect that's why a lot of people who change career choose electrics over, say, carpentry, gas or plumbing where precision mechanics are, arguably, present to a greater degree. That's why you get kitchen and bathroom fitters chopping off CPC's, DIY'ers fudging Class 2, yet metal, luminaires onto single insulation wiring after discarding a shonky connector housing and people who literally touch a conductor to see if it's live. There's a chasm of difference between someone with a little knowledge who thinks they know how to act and a proper, fully trained and equipped spark, who knows how to act.
@rickterry81483 ай бұрын
@@dsesuk Yes totally agree. I am an electronics engineer that did the17th multiple choice. But NOT an ELECRTRICIAN. I have enough knowledge to know the difference. And, a very important point is that you guys are up to date on the latest regs, a full time job in itself.
