Don’t know if someone told you, but in the books, Aethelred is Uthreds cousin! Uthred‘s mom being the sister of Aethelreds father. And before he went to Wessex and Alfred, he lived with his (dead) mothers family for some time

Osferth got a mad glow up in House of the Dragon. Plus became a Dragon rider, Uhtred would be proud. It's hard to recognize with his character being the complete opposite of what he plays in HOTD 😂

I know you're ahead so i'll just say this. I think King Alfred has offered alot to Uhtred too. I think the issue is that Uhtred doesn't fully see himself as a subject to the King. In this world, there is a level of respect and loyalty that you have to show a king. For example, Alfred questions Uhtred because Uhtred just doesnt play by the rules and does things his own way. Alfred is used to the old ways. Respect your king, Respect your god. Alfred is a complicated guy, but i've never fully hated him even at this point. Going to the daneland territory secretly is breaking the law, not telling Alfred what he was doing (as a servant of the king, he's supposed to) is considered potential conspiracy/treasonous behavior. WE the audience know that Uhtred's intentions are fair and not devious. But he also never fully explains things he does. He just does them because he think's he's doing the right thing. But since he's a servant of the king, legally he's obligated to inform the king of the things he's doing and why he's doing them. Alfred has every right to be distrusting of a man who doesn't follow the code of knighthood and kings. Uhtred follows his own code and does things his own way. Alfred is wrong for assuming Uhtred has other motives. But Uhtred is also wrong for not being a little more honest. Like i said, WE know Uhtred's intentions. But Alfred doesn't. And when you're faced with a man who doesnt believe in your god and doesn't follow the code of conduct that a Knight should follow, then it makes sense why Alfred would not fully trust Uhtred. Alfred knows Uhtred is a valuable warrior and a valuable asset to the kingdom. But uhtred is always testing his patience and loyalty. Put it this way, would you really trust a person who only ever tells you have half the truth, or only tells you the truth at the last possible moment? Would you trust a person who doesnt believe in the things you believe in and is always doing odd things behind your back? lastly, not saying Alfred is perfect. the man is very distrusting and overly attached to his beliefs. Uhtred may not follow the rules, but he does try to be honorable. Something that Alfred has a hard time coming to terms with.

I see what your saying but I somewhat disagree. First, Uthred also provides a lot for Alfred, and helps him grow as a person, Alfred I so unaware of the going ons in his own home and country and that does not make for a good leader, just his ignorance to what his daughter is going through at this point is an example of this, and it'll be Uthred who helps in that and supports her. Alfred's ultimate failing is his belief that anyone different from him is untrustworthy. And the easy rebuttal to your point about Uthred not telling him everything is that this is how cabinets and people around the king work, they gather evidence and find solutions before presenting their suspicions to the king, you can see that with Otta Sineor when he speaks to Alfred about his idea of guthred becoming king, he had the letter from the Abbot, he's gone off read the letter, looked into things to his satisfaction then told Alfred. Uthred not telling Alfred what he's up to is typical, Alfred not trusting a member of his cabinet is what is unusual and what causes friction. An easy way to understand this fully is if you were in a minority group in our current society and have experienced prejudice this storyline is so recognizable and effective in portraying someone who is cast aside for being different and treated unfairly even when they do everything everyone else is doing. And this is just one aspect of Alfred's many many many flaws.

@@sysanlots The difference being that Odda has earned that trust because of his loyalty to the country, the previous king, aka Alfred's brother, and to Alfred himself. We can only assume this trust to be able to do some things outside the chain of command, comes from the well established trust he gained over the course of two or more decades. Uhtred did not earn this trust and has continued to, from the beginning, disregard and disrespect the chain of command whenever he feels like it. He came in expecting to be trusted simply because he considers himself an honorable warrior. We all know that Uhtred most of the time means well, because as the audience we can see where he's coming from. I love Uhtred and i will choose him over Alfred any time, but Odda earned the right to be trusted. Uhtred is barely an ealdorman, he's quite frankly just a knight and servant to the king at this point in the series. And of course his own spiritual beliefs conflict with Alfred's (which further prevents Alfred from fully trusting him) Uhtred is a Lord by reputation but not by title. He has not earned the right to be so self-indulgent in the eyes of the king. Sure, he has done things for Wessex/Alfred, things that Alfred takes for granted sometimes, but Uhtred has also done things for himself and has proven that he can be reckless. He serves but acts like a rogue. This is the reason why Alfred questions his loyalty. Its all but confirmed in this episode Alfred "You serve your king reluctantly..." Uthred "But I serve..." ------ This, the fact that he basically acknowledge's Alfred's statement. He reluctantly serves, in short he doesn't full respect or value the chain of command. He sees this as an obligation and not a duty. Something Alfred recognizes. I think Alfred's biggest flaw to me is his arrogance in believing he can subdue Uhtred's reckless warrior nature. And Uhtred's biggest flaw is his inability to bow to any authority willingly. Its not easy, the concept of bowing to a King. Especially when you feel like you're forced to be there. Alfred wants a loyal warrior and Uhtred just wants to be free. Uhtred wants to be trusted merely because He knows he's an honorable man. But trust, especially during this time period, is gained through respect and servitude to the king, which is something Uhtred has never quite been good at. Uhtred doesn't get to just withhold information just because he knows his intentions are honorable. He needs to recognize that any time he acts against the wishes of the king, or behind the kings back without his authority, he is disrespecting the crown. Anyways, sorry to ramble. I love Uhtred and I love Alfred XD

@@granddaddyotaku636I can't read though this reply rn now its a lot. But I saw where you said Uthred hadn''t earned Alfred's trust, I dont know why you think that, by the end of s1 Uthred had earned his trust time and time over. Alfred was written to be selfish and smart yes but so flawed and paranoid and not a good person or king or father. David Dawson is incredible at portraying the role and brings a manner of empathy to the role, and he and Alexander Dreymon have incredible onscreen chemistry. Nevertheless, I think Alfred really had no reason to doubt Uthred so much and to think he did is to manufacture reasons to like him. just my pov.

I get the frustration with Aethelflaed, but the thing is her situation at present cannot change with her husband. Divorce is a custom among Danes, not among Saxons. In addition she is her father's daughter and believes that what her marriage brings to Wessex is more important than her suffering. It is freaking awful though. She also has a mother who has told her that her duty as Alfred's daughter is to marry and strengthen his line. She is an intelligent and strong woman, but she is also in a predicament she feels at this time can't be altered. She is also 17/18 right now and still had hope for actual love and romance. But you will see incredible growth from her in the coming episodes and seasons.

There’s a lot to unpack with this episode because Afred does know how good Uhtred is to have around. They’ve butted heads since the beginning and Alfred resents the fact that Uhtred has more recognition to some because of his bravery, fighting skills and clever tactics. All the things Alfred physically isn’t because he’s sickly and was brought up to follow God, be shamed eternally if he didn’t, and despite screw ups and getting thrown in the deep end, he is keeping the kingdom together. We just have time jumps during those times because they’re peaceful 😂 that being said, does he disrespect Uhtred, absolutely. He has the power and stubbornness to do so. Like many religious figures, he wants to either use him or see him fail because that means he was better all along. It’s a crazy relationship but actually realistic. He doesn’t fully trust Aethelred. He already was looking at him with doubt during the dowry discussion. But back then, a secure marriage was everything and Aethelflaed is at least showing a backbone and not admitting to stuff she didn’t do. Many pressured women wouldn’t be able to do the same.
