Don't forget about Serra who was a planeswalker and was also practically an angel but died way back in Homelands. I wouldn't be surprised if Elspeth is a descendant of Serra or some reincarnation. I thought it was interesting why Serra's realm was brought up as one of the places targeted by Elesh Norn in MOM since there's basically nothing left there.

Serra is brought up a lot. While connected to angels and powerful enough to create them through mana, she wasn’t one. But you’re right she kinda, basically was lol

Serra was human, and an old walker. In that sense, she was more like a goddess, with a flock of angels at her service. Old walkers could shapeshift at will and have whatever appearance they chose, so Serra manifested as an angel, just like the creator of the original plane that became Phyrexia lived in the form of a dragon, but wasn't actually a dragon. But being a descendant of Serra would be really cool :)

It's like when Yawgmoth became the god of Phyrexia, he was only able to manifest in his godly form on Old Phyrexia or when it was linked to another plane by force

I wonder if the Sylex's true purpose isn't actually as a weapon. Maybe it's purpose to grant the desire of the person imbueing it with power like a monkeys paw type wish. In a way Urza didn't want to nukr Dominaria, he was tired of fighting heartbroken over his brother's fall and afraid that he was too weak to stop phyrexia from corrupting everthing...so he just wanted it all to end and be wiped clean so it granted his desire and gave him the power to fight Yawgmoth. Elspeth's desire has always been to protect others and wants the power to shield others from Phyrexia so maybe it will give her the power she needs

I just wish Mtg would just make an animated series or a animated movie already instead of articles or books/novels or comic books. I wouldn't want to see a live action movie or t.v show because i don't think it would be done right or look good in my opinion. Besides who would they get to play the part of the characters in a live action movie or T.v show that can make look believable as the Mtg characters ? No in my opinion an anime is the way to go just like how League of Legends had done with Arcane which was a humongous success for them. We been asking for this for years so come on Wizards give us what we want already.

I have watched this video and loved it, My Personal thoughts towards Elspeth being an Angle I think its totally possible. The Idea of The Sylex Blast awakening her angelic powers makes sense to me. When Urza used it his Spark Ignited, with Elspeth already being a plainswalker it is possible that she could be reconstructed in the blast as an angle. Personally I have always thought of Elspeth as an Angle without wings (Elspeth the Resplendent) and it would be a great way to bolster the Gate watch forces with an unique Plainswalking angle.

Yes, Elspeth has always had angelic-like powers of light. She can give people angel wings made of light, and protect them in an aura of light, etc. Her light powers were always angel-themed!

Elspeth will always hold a special place in my heart. I got into magic when I was in middle school but stopped playing in high school. It wasn’t until college that I started playing and the very first booster pack I bought was scars of Mirrodin and what do you know, Elspeth Tirel. I didn’t even know what a planeswalker card type was lol. But yeah, I’ve had the nagging feeling that there was more to her than other planeswalkers. The whole Ob Nixilis breaking the demons can’t be planeswalker rule comes into play here. Hell, they even put Ob Nixilis in the same set where we see Elsepth return home, a blatant foreshadow in plain sight. That villain role could’ve been taken up by anyone else (Hello, Calix?) but they chose Ob.

From what I remember Angles aren't just made of mana but they are born from the prayers of the people of that land. I remember that because the sad story's of one was that she was born late, the towns prayers were answered too late, the town was gone and the angel was left purposeless.

I don't really know where is this "angel can't planeswalking" theory come from? we have dragon planeswalker, we have dog planeswalker, we have demon, human, elf, vampire planeswalker, angel maybe never appear as an planeswalker before, but how does that eliminate the possibility of them being able to planeswalk?

Given Elspeth's writing focusing so heavy on overcoming defeat. I think they'll give her another tragedy choice. She COULD become an angel, but that would take her out of the fight, so she has to choose between a destiny personal to her or rejoin the fight. That's why we see the feathers falling and her exiting with no wings

Am I wrong in thinking that even if it destroyed a few planes along with it. More lives will be lost by not destroying those planes? I know the ends rarely justify the means, but in this case I feel like if we're worried about a high death count keeping the phyrexians a little longer only does more damage in the long run.

While I think a link to Serra would be the most likely angelic tie for Elspeth, it's not the only possibility. Elspeth could have a connection with Asha: the Alaran being who created the angels of Bant and left the Sigil of the Empty Throne to guard the place in her absence. We don't know much about Asha other than her dying to banish Malfegor. But Serra seems a more likely connection as she is a confirmed planeswalker.

The thing with all that is happening is making me think, where is Ashiok. Last we saw her she was manipulating Elesh Norn to see her nightmares. My head canon, based on the fact that Giada appeared to be a normal girl and that it is stated that no new angels were "created" on New Capenna, is that angels in New Capenna might work similar to planeswalkers. They are normal humans with the potential to become angels but it is only through certain acts, like Giada sacrificing herself, that they can fully ascend. It could also explain why Elspeth and other Capennans were kept prisoner instead of just being compleated. They couldn't be compleated because Capenna angels have an immunity to Compleation.

There is another thing that supports the theory that she is in fact an angel: in the Mirrodin Story Elspeth, Koth and (I believe) Venser where fighting phyrexians and around Elspeth there where so many slayen enemies that Elspeth dissapeared behind that giant pile of bodies no one else where killing so many phyrexians and well halo, the stuff the angels of new capenna are made of is highly toxic to phyrexians so maybe those phyrexians didn´t die because of Elspeth´s fury but simply because touching her was hurting them or at least weakened them Also there are enough non-mortal Planeswalker running around that it wouldn´t be surprising if she was an angel, and in new capenna she was fighting against Ob Nixilis of all possible Planeswalker and he is a demon so it would fit to make her an angel to counter the demon Planeswalker

@@AetherHub i would certainly see that as an act of desperation given the situation. I can also see Jace having some part of his consciousness intact due to the halo in her sword. So he would be compleated still, but perhaps able to overcome with enough will at a pivotal moment. We did see hmm react to halo when he was first exposed to it in ONE and, given how the scope of his power was described, he could do a ton of damage being connected to the whole of phyrexia's consciousness. As her story has been loss after loss, I can see it coming full circle with Elspeth taking back her friends and her life from the forces that tortured her and took so much from her.

She might "save" Ajani in the sense that she could free him from Phyrexia in death, allowing him to truly die and to free his spirit. Like curing his soul in death, letting it escape and fly free into some afterlife. That would be sad but beautiful. I just hope nobody gets "uncompleated". For 9000 years nobody ever escaped Phyrexia once compleated. It would break an absolute rule, like curing poison counters. But we know Phyrexians can be defective, like Xantcha or the new mite legend. So, we could get a defective Jace, for example, with still a tiny bit of free will, or some moments of lucidity, just enough to help the heroes a tiny hit without actually being cured.

As someone who is a big fan of Angel tribals and Aven/Bird people tribals, I would LOVE to see some more of them in March of the Machines seeing as Avens like Kangee, Sky Warden, long since dead, defeated MANY Phyrexians in their first invasion with ease and skill. I think maybe he could be resurrected? Or some new Aven could be a legendary character creature card? I think as far as Elspeth, she'll have to make an appearance as either a Planeswalker card or at least a Legendary creature card I hope...and of course she'd have to be an angel I think, there's no other way to put it. That teaser card with the very clear white feathers falling...couldn't be more obvious. That said, maybe her card could be something cool as fuck like "Elspeth, Serra-Incarnate" right? I'd probably pee my pants in nerd fever LOL. And maybe a really cool eagle style Aven Wizard called like "insert name, Scion/Heir of Kangee" and have these big bad ass wings and spells flying out of their talons. I’ll play devils advocate- they talked about the Eldrazi’s origins before. They showed statues of them, and one was an Angel like appearance, before they turned into what we see the 3 main big eldrazi titans. So, what IF, Elspeth gains that power, Angel upgrades up, but still unable to stop the Phyrixians, gains to much power with help from other planeswalkers, & gets corrupted in the process to gain more power to beat the phyerixians with Tefiri, and loses partial humanity from it going back into time. To that world that they devastate after they turn into eldrazi. Fan theory of course, and it’ll never happen. Cuz Wizards tend to leave lots of loose ends until they feel it’s time to create more stories. 😅🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️….

I thought it was interesting that the Atraxa reprint in March of the Machines, in the "Masterpiece" slot, has her depicted in the New Capenna showcase art style. Meaning Atraxa will be going to, or is already on, New Capenna in the March of the Machine storyline. Since Atraxa is a Phyrexian Angel, maybe she's going there to compleat the Angels on the plane? Maybe there'll be a showdown between Elspeth and Atraxa on New Capenna, with Elspeth showing up to defend the angels?!?

It was already explained in the story. Norn has sent Ataraxa to Capenna because of their anti-Phyrexian weapon, Halo. So the goal is to destroy Halo production and make sure it isn't used against them.

Something I feel is being overlooked is the possibility that Elspeth may not be a full angel, could she be a half angel? Could she have mixed parentage? I don't know if angels can have children with mortals in MTG but if new Capenas angels are more human than most perhaps they can have kids with humans. This would explain her mortal planeswalker spark while also having angelic gifts?

I think Elspeth is kinda half-human, half-angel and that was what made the phyrexians want to do experiments on her, but they couldn't predict she would even be born with a spark. And then comes the Sylex: it will not only awaken her angel essence but also empower her for a brief time. Why a brief time? After the Mending the godlike powers of planeswalkers faded away. I don't believe modern sparks can withstand that power anymore without something really drastic - such as The Elderspell OR a blast of the Sylex. And if Elspeth is to survive this fight it wouldn't be really interesting for the story team to have an all-powerful planeswalker hanging around...

Serra was never an angel, she was a human old walker. There is nothing said about mortals, it is about natural beings. Only natural beings can be born with a spark. Angels, demons and elementals are manifestations of mana that are just spawned, not born.

I think the true heroes of the story will be the Eldrazi. It will be found out that the Eldrazi weren't actually destroying planes, but hunting Phyrexian Oil to destroy it. This is why Emrakul panicked and locked herself away when she realized she was hurting innocents. When the Phyrexians get to Innistrad, Emrakul will release herself after sensing the Phyrexian oil.

If the Cylix was truly a world destroying, realm-destroying nuke, why did they need to travel to the heart of Phyrexia in the first place? They could have just entered anywhere, dropped the bomb anywhere, and left at any point. It's such a glaring hole that it undermines a pretty serviceable storyline.

Here's my Theory on Elspeth... her birth was a result of a Human and Angel having "relations" and she is a Angel/Human hybrid but before she could realize it, the phyrexians destroyed her homeworld where the truth of her true nature resided, so for all this time it was believed by all, even us that she was just a mortal that got her spark as a normal mortal would, but the Sylex actually brought her back in time and to her home plane where she discovered the truth and her true nature and form have finally been realized, and from there Teferi with his time traveling shenanigans manages to find Elspeth and they return to the present and with her newfound powers that are possibly at premending levels, has the ability to cure everyone, including the other walkers of completion and Elesh Norn's nightmares of Elspeth that Ashiok instilled come to fruition, and Elesh Norn knew all along what elspeth really was via the nightmares hence why she was so afraid of her.

My guess: The Sylex is not a bomb, but a tool to release one's ultimate potential, like Guru in DBZ! Elspeth will return transformed, as a pre-Mending walker like Urza was, and assume the form of an angel, since old walkers appeared in whatever form they chose. But she will be WHITE-BLUE! Don't forget who activated the Sylex: Jace! And the card preview is blue, so it's a hint! Elspeth will return tainted by blue mana because of her new understanding of the Blind Eternities. In the Sylex Blast, she pierced through the Eternities and fell off the multiverse, and into the "Universes Beyond"... Elspeth has met with Gandalf, Optimus Prime, and prayed to the God-Emperor of the Imperium of Man himself. She now has the Infinity Gauntlet, and wears Batman's mask. As she fights Elesh Norn, she gets infected and is compleated. She becomes the Grand-Mother of Machines, and leads Phyrexia in the conquest of the Omniverse. Next summer we get a bunch of blockbuster movies of Marvel, DC, Transformers, the TNMT, LOTR, and 40k against Phyrexia. Deadpool and She-Hulk get compleated, allowing the Phyrexians to now shatter the fourth wall. During the movies at the theater Jin-Gitaxias can now see us, watching the movies. He slices through the IMAX screens and slaughters us all! Hordes of Phyrexians poor through the screens and invade our planet, exterminate humanity, therefore solving climate change!!!!! Elspeth lands on top of the Eiffel Tower, laughing. She transforms back into her real form: Nicol Bolas! Bolas: "Finally! My master plan worked! Hahahahaha"

Here’s my theory. She will get a flip card. front side she will be a creature angel. She had lost her spark due to cylex blast and has unlocked angel powers / a new power this being only a creature. the flip or backside is elspeth reignited. Angel elspeth with a newfound or her spark back. my idea for this is that she is in whatever realm she is as angel but is given a choice to leave or decides to leave the realm this somehow reigniting her spark

Has everyone just forgotten the specifics of why this is possible? They've explained this? Angels typically can't become planeswalkers because they were 'constructed' beings and the spark required a naturalborn being (something they've since flagrantly flouted with the dumb enchantment planeswalker but... one problem at a time please) The angels on Capenna are DIFFERENT from angels on other planes. Capenna was a plane that BELONGED to angels before it was stolen from them while they were weakened after saving everyone's ass from the Phyrexians. In other words angels were NATURALBORN on Capenna, thus, sparkable... it's really not that difficult to understand.
