It's why I feel MMA did a lot of damage to pro-wrestling. Firstly, it was a style of fighting that you couldn't really find much on TV, and secondly, once you've seen real submission holds etc, the worked ones need to be much, much tighter

Meltzer Star Ratings and Cagematch ratings don't get you TV deals with massive upside, ratings do. We need to get rid of this motion that wrestling isn't, at its fundamental core, a story telling medium. AEW "Sickos" try to gaslight people by constantly referencing the "Sports based" philosophy that TK keeps spouting, completely ignoring the fact that all wrestling promotions that have drawn money as run on stories of why we are fighting, whats at stake and who are these guys. AEW can keep its 6 1/2 star match between Ospray and Danielson, WWE is currently about to start cashing the megachecks from Netflix

I think it's possible to be sports based and tell stories. The starting point is to make the matches make sense as contests and not breaking suspension of disbelief at every opportunity. Don't bury the ref and follow what are meant to be the rules. If the matches make sense then you can tell the stories with them.

He books “dream matches” with no story, stakes or point other than the equivalent of playing with action figures. Anyone can do that. It’s one of the reasons why WWE is going to Netflix and AEW is slumming it on Triller

@@steveogden5774 My fantasy booking for NXT would be dropping the belts, and having a 'ladder' where the top 3 or 4 people are eligible for main roster opportunities. Structure the bulk of the feuds around the idea of the 'crab pot' and people trying to climb over the top of people above them. Sports tell stories - the player who has never won the big one competing in maybe their last major tournament, the player who cheats but the home fans turn a blind eye to it... It's not just possible to be sports based and tell stories, it can honestly be a useful way to give a structure where stories emerge naturally.

The AEW disconnect right now reminds me of the last few seasons of Game of Thrones where the idea was "if we show the people cool fights, the story doesn't have to make sense." And the viewers rejected that wholesale because the story mattered so much more than the showrunners realised. Instead of changing their way, they doubled down on impossible travel times and ignoring plot holes and they alienated most of their fanbase.

I think some of the reason is the movie lead in, Black Panther being a Marvel/Comic Book movie, of an average known hero, probably doesn't draw as much in rewatch as BBT. The people watching Comic Book movies is also a limited pool.

Recent twitter interaction I explain over the past 5 years I have given AEW 4 different chances where I watched regularly each time they managed to drive me off with bad booking/story telling and didnt manage to get me invested in anything on the show. I explained WWE drove me off around 2017 and I didnt give them another chance till 2022 to show im not some "E-Drone". The AEW freakazoids then say "If you gave it a chance you’ll be invested watching the show" "watch the ppv's you wont be let down". Like wtf I just explained to them how many chances I've given AEW and why would you invest $50 on PPV when your not interested in any of the stories/angles

I think wrestling is better with more competitive companies, and AEW have just about everything you need to be a solid competitor. However, AEW are far too reckless with the health of the people who work for them. I don't want a company to succeed when the success is built on the shortened careers of the people they have signed (and for full context, I want the Money In The Bank format removed as I hate the idea of a ladder matches just to fill a spot on a calendar)
