@@chestercopperpot4455 I wouldn't say the title reign has been underwhelming, but it HAS been out of focus. Anytime Hangman is onscreen, he delivers and frequently has the best match of the night. But there have been FAR too many shows where he has been absent that make him feel unimpactful as a champion. As for him turning Heel, I STRONGLY disagree with that since it goes to what I see as an antiquated form of booking that treats alignment changes as they only form of character development. A hero does not have to be one note. You can be prideful, aggressive and even vicious without having to completely shift your moral compass. Hangman does not need to walk out and cut a "You People" promo to be a badass. He doesn't have to be soft or a pushover to still be the ultimately good person that so many became a fan of. "Offer one hand and arm the other. Wise, Shepard." -Grunt, Mass Effect 2 Think of any other long-form storytelling. Imagine if the only way a character developed was switching back and forth between good guy and bad guy. They wouldn't feel complex, they'd feel indecisive and insane. Characters have a thousand ways to develop outside of "Suddenly I eat babies now." A Heel turn as a way to add depth is just lazy writing.

You can get away with mistakes on the indies where it’s just that room but it’s every week on TV that people are flopping the “cool” moves and for what? I actually watched since the beginning when they were in ROH together so I already knew what the Bucks, Omega and Hangman were like in the ring. I remember seeing Hangman before he was called Hangman. Adam Page used a noose after defeating his opponent put it around his neck and threw him over the top rope and pulled him off the ground, hanging him. The Young Bucks then called Page "Hangman" and the name stuck.

So Danielson vs Hangman 1 didn't show how unexperienced in long matches Hangman almost beat Danielson with his unwillingness to give up. How he managed to go to war on their 2nd match and came out victorious, showing his ring skill adapts as he goes. How he was afraid of stepping in ring to a Texas Deathmatch with a guy who beat Jon Moxley, still conquered his fear and beat the living p*ss out of Lance Archer. How he proved to one of the better pro wrestlers Adam Cole that he is no joke, he isn't easily manipulated and in the end that he is a goddamn Scary champion that isn't afraid to teach you a lesion in a Texas Deathmatches. Here he see Cm Punk coming out , mimicking the Hang motion after a match. Showing he is the next champ. Of course Hanger will come out and say he will destroy Cm Punk. This is his turf. He battled himself for more than two years to get to the top, he beat The Kenny Omega. Cm Punk so far has proved nothing to him. Hangman always had balls my friend, this is just a poked bear going for a rampage.

@@joemixon834 I have to disagree, both pointed out their characteristics. Hangman going for water while all out of breath and Danielson doing jumping jacks. Then on second one which was 30min longer, Hanger did not take a sip of water. Let's not forget how Hangman is with emotions going against himself (the whole journey to the title win). So it just made sense he was disappointed with his own performance. The 2nd match win, was him proving himself that those demons doesn't hold him back anymore. And of course being a baby face is harder to play than heel considering how careful you must be. While point of Danielson carrying anyone is an easy point to make, this seemed like they were actually equal (which is insane)

@@todd1928 You’re entitled to feel that way, but I’d argue it’s more nuanced storytelling. Both performers are dealing shades of gray, and it plays up their character arcs so far. Punk was a bad guy in the past, so it’s not out of the realm for him to have those tendencies, even when he’s a good guy. He’s portraying a flawed character which is more realistic. Hangman it’s a character that’s been dealing with self-doubt his entire career, and like most people with insecurities, they overcorrect too far to the other side and act arrogant because it’s a mask for their insecurities: a front they put on for the public eye. This is a more realistic portrayal for both characters and I’m enjoying it. I will say that I’m more on Punk’s side than I was before hangman’s promo.

@@thetribalist6923 the shades of grey thing is true but the problem is 80% of the roster is trying to work in shades of grey which makes the whole thing muddled. Yeah punk has worked as a heel before but his entire run in AEW up to this show has been 100% good guy. Hangman has been dealing with self doubt a lot but he doesn't come of to more human to me after this, he comes off like a whining asshole who's annoyed someone is more popular than him. Basically Hogan in the 80s behind the scenes. Shades of grey is good but this was so out of nowhere that it's obviously something they just threw in to add some actual spice to the match.
