I have this lens but almost never use it, because I shoot indoors mainly. Wouldn't even be able to tell if it's good or bad, but the range is great. Probably a useful lens for travelling.

sorry, but why did you vaste half of the time with boring unboxing and an unimportant short film :( some say the non-VR version is better - FX lenses are constructed for FX sensors and DX lenses for DX sensors, if you mix them you vaste a lot of the lens and sensor potential, but you get some self-made "new" optical issues the built-in camera and lense software can`t compensate together properly because they are not made for each other in these cases and you can`t solve them all with post-processing

how would you compare this lens with 24-70 f2.8,​ if not considering aperture in both the lenses...

24-70 weighs a lot more and costs A LOT more and of course if both faster and sharper. But it is a differnent class of lens anyways.

I have this lens and I am going to sell it. They sell it as 24-85 but neither at 24 nor at 28 can you use it with confidence because the corners are a total disaster, even at F8. The old 28-85 AF D zoom lens has better performance, of course, it doesn't have VR but it can be used at 28 mm and provides a decent image. The only quality options for this focal range in Nikon F is the 24-70 f2.8 G ED, or the version with VR although it is larger and more delicate, or you have to go for a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2.

basically any Nikkor ED VR glass is superior to a cheap sigma. The sigma will be sharp but has worse VR, Build quality, and may or may not focus properly.

in a DX lens you lose the wide end 18-24mm, so you'll still need to keep the kit 18-55mm for this reason alone. In other words the 24-85mm is not a total replacement of your 18-55mm kit lens but it's a good idea to get this lens if you have both an DX and FX dslr or if you're planning for the future

stardomee Well it looks like this lens is noticeably sharper. The kit lens isn't very sharp. Also it's a little more versatile considering there is a bigger focal length difference. If you're trying to shoot a family event this should make it very easy, given that you have a flash if it's low light. Or for maybe street for photogeaphy. I think it's still worth it on a DX body.

@@Jay-jb2vr good camera, but I would only buy it used. new one costs 900$. for that money I prefer to hunt for used D500 on Ebay. If you do not intend to shoot sports/action, you can take used D800 for about 800$.

For what it is and the very cheap second hand price it’s an ok lens but it has very poor micro contrast resulting in 2 dimensional images compared to the 24-70 f2.8. I don’t use mine, I stick the 24-70 on instead every time.

The 24-120 f4 is the "better" lens but it's bigger, heavier and more expensive. Carrying my 24-120 around all day is annoying.

I own this lens. At first, I was like, 'Why tf is he reviewing an FX lens on a DX camera?' This lens is SHARP however, on FX it vignettes like a sonofabitch, especially at the wide end. I am not snapped into Nikon's DX zoom lens offerings, but this lens is probably ideally suited for DX. Yes, you can fix the vignetting with software, but I'd rather have an FX lens where I didn't "need" to run every wide shot through an image editor.

Alderman Fred C. Davis If you can afford it and don’t mind the extra size and weight the 24-70 f2.8 renders a nicer image. It has noticeably better micro contrast giving the image a nicer look. I have both lenses and tested them well. The 24-85 is definitely sharp but if you crop in you can see the very poor micro contrast issues. It’s an ok lens for what it is but I wouldn’t use mine. The issue cannot be improved in editing.

@@aussie8114 I'm sure the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 is MUCH better than the 24-85 however, it's out of my price range. For what I do, 75% of my shooting is done with the Nikkor 16-35mm f/4. I bought the 24-85 just for those occasions that I wanted a 'walkaround'/'general purpose' lens. Even though I had not seen the vignetting issue addressed in any KZbin videos, I should have been suspicious of the relatively low price. I only shoot for pleasure, so I live with it. If I were ever shooting anything super critical, I have the full complement of manual focus Nikkor primes from back in the 'olden days'. LOL!
