Affenpinschers - Best of Breed

Day 5 of our ten million viewers celebration and today we nip back to 2013 where at UK Toy we got a few words with Val Kemeny a breeder of Affenpinschers to get the low-down on the cheeky little monkeys.

The best friend I ever had was PJ. He was a little person is a little black suit. When he was a little boy, I mean puppy, his fur was jet black, and he looked identical to a tiny gorilla. He taught me so much about life, love, forgiveness, helping others, compassion, I could go on but I'm sure you understand. I didn't know I could love a little fur baby so much. When he became sick at age 14, it completely caught me off guard. He loved to sit basically on top of my head when I would sit in my recliner. One day he fell off. That had never happened before. At first I laughed until I saw him acting unsteady, as if he was coming out of a seizure. Apparently he had. He began to have a bad cough and I took him to the Dr. (I know it's Vet but he didn't know he was a dog and to be honest, to me he wasn't one) After a few visit's and no improvement, the Vet basically snatched PJ out of my hands and said "Let's find out what is going on" then he took my little buddy to have an x-ray. After a few minutes the vet was carrying PJ as he walked towards me, all I could think was how cute he was (PJ, not the vert). I honestly didn't expect the x-ray to show anything. Then the vet said, "Here's the problem", he held the x-ray up to the light. PJ's little lungs looked like the were packed full of marbles. I was stunned. I never once felt any abnormal bumps or lumps. As my little buddies breathing became labored I would take him for rides around the neighborhood, hold him so he could stick his little head out the window. It was a form of breathing treatment and for a while responded to it really well. But, it all happened so quickly. He became too weak, the treatments no longer helped. I did everything I could to make him as comfortable as possible. One day I left work and rushed home to check on him. When I walked into my home, I began calling his name. "PJ .. PJ .. PJ! ..PJ!! PJ!!!! As I walked to my bedroom calling his name, a little louder each time, out from the bedroom PJ came out slowly, he was giving it everything he had to hang on long enough so we could both say goodbye. I got down on the floor, gently picked up my little buddy and cried harder than I have ever cried in my life. It's been seven years since I said goodby to PJ, yet as I type this, the tears are flowing. PJ had salt and pepper, wavy hair on the top of his head. So did I. I had a goatee, so did PJ. PJ had a slight limp on his right hind leg, so did I. I guess it's true what they say about pets and there human begin to look alike. I can't speak for all Affenpinschers but my PJ was the best. I Love you little buddy.

I just lost my 11 year old Yorkie 8 days ago, so I know how it is to lose a long term friend. Not sure if I will ever feel like getting a new fur baby.

Hi, I don’t know if you will ever see this comment but I hope you do. I find myself on KZbin after my iPhone suggested my dogs breed to me. I’ve had my dog max for 9 1/2 years, he was rescued at the estates age of 5. He would have been 15 this year and he just passed last Thursday. He was this exact breed. 🥹 My best friend d max also passed away of breathing problems but it was never diagnosed. Coincidentally, max loved very much to sit by my head while I was asleep or sit on the back of the couch near my head. It must be what this breed does. Rest in peace to the best friends we ever had. This breed must be extremely sweet, friendly and loving with the most expressive eyes.

I have one. She’s hilarious, she always does the funniest things. I always say she looks like a gremlin haha. I’m glad she said they should look scruffy, I’ve had a couple people imply I don’t care for her hair, and I always have to explain to them that that’s how they all look, it’s normal, it’s just cause you don’t see them often so they look quite different from other small dogs, they’re coarse hair and scruffy.

They are wonderful lil critters, we lucked into one that had been returned to a local pound 6 times, we have no idea why he is a wonderful pup even if he is not pure bred. His snout is a bit long for the breed. But we love him, the only downside and upside at the same time is they are not commercialized in the US, so they are expensive. We will likely end up as unwilling breeders, buying the best we can afford, simply so we can have pups for us, with the remaining financing new bloodlines. One or two litters tops from each female. We have primarily had rescues up till now, and love all dogs, but Brutus has won our hearts.
