Been using it for only about 15 minutes and already I think it’s amazing. It’s done everything I wanted it to do(like expanding elements from its center, which apparently is a lot more difficult to implement than you would think), and intuitive to do for the UI. It also has SLICES, which is a godsend for web design.

That's so cool! I nearly jumped of my seat when I saw your video (and the fact that finally Designer is out for the iPad) pop up... . Also thanks for the Designer Course... I bought it when it came out, to refresh my somewhat limited experience with vectors (and my nonexistent experience with Affinity Designer). Now that it's out for the iPad my interest has practically doubled. I'm really excited! Also, Procreate 4.1 is a really, really strong release. I'm super impressed with how they implemented the new features and with how well they work.

Been into photography and editing for some years now but only recently started on digital art a couple of weeks back when I got an iPad Pro and pencil. Your enthusiasm for the subject when watching reviews prior to buying it got me interested, and your enthusiasm for Designer convinced to buy it despite never having used a vector art program before lol. This does look like a lot of fun :)

So, now that you have Designer, Photo and Procreate, why do you still need Astropad. I mean, I’ve even Kickstarted Astropad Luna, and even have one of the prototypes plugged into the back of my Mac, but I really can’t see myself using it, like, ever?!
@thebradcolbow6 жыл бұрын
Good point, I've used Astropad less and less as the software has gotten better.
@HeyBear6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's kind of a shame - I was completely over the moon about the prospect of Astropad - it helped me stop drooling over the massive Cintiqs! But when I finally got around to using it, I quickly realised that I didn't really want or need it - I really wanted to need it, but I just didn't! Picking up an iPad and scribbling in Procreate is exactly 0.0001% of the effort it takes to get something like Astropad up and running, and then you have to sit at your desk - ugh! I think the Astro guys are doing an amazing job, and still think it's a great product, but unfortunately, for me at least, it's solving a problem that I just don't have :l Is it weird that I still want to have the problem?

Great short intro to the BEST vector drawing app for the iPad Pro in the market. FINALLY a professional level drawing/designing/vector app for the iPad Pro. Been waiting a while for developers to take the iPad seriously and finally, with Affinity products, we are there. Looking forward to more tutorials, because this interface is indeed quite different - maybe even better!
@Fabio-rg9nv6 жыл бұрын
Serif really showed the potential of the great iPad, the second time already. They managed to get their full featured professional applications onto the iPad and still optimize it for the screen size and touch interactions really well, which is key. Let me explain something before I come to my final point about Affinity at the end of my comment: I think Apple is doing amazing with iPad and it is designed with other ideas in mind than computers, it‘s supposed to be interacted with in a different way, which many people don‘t quite get. It’s a device from the ground up designed to be portable, intuitive to use via touch screen and many things are different from what they are on computers. And that‘s intentionally and shouldn‘t be changed. While many people want Apple to make the iPad more similar to computers with things like mouse support, windowed apps, a whole file system with finder or even run macOS on it, I really appreciate the approach Apple is taking and the way they‘re designing a new platform. And every year they’re carefully and thoughtfully bringing in new features, like the dock, that brings the iPad’s capabilities closer to computers, while still maintaining their approach. The iPad‘s form factor has many advantages, compared to a traditional laptop: - The main advantage is, that it‘s one single device which is really portable and doesn‘t rely on anything like a keyboard and mouse, - you can literally pull it out of your bag and start using it, - you don‘t even need a table or your lap to get done some simple things and - many tasks are way more intuitive to use on a properly designed touch interface. And that the iPad is exclusively designed the way it is and doesn‘t also support mouses or tries to be more than an actual tablet, results in software being perfectly optimized for a great touch screen experience. And that is KEY for making the things I mentioned in the list actually work. Microsoft praises their full desktop OS and full desktop applications on their convertibles, but those programs are a nightmare to use on a touch screen, especially when the screen is as small as 10 inches. And because those convertibles are trying hard to be a tablet even though the software isn‘t made for it at all, they end up being a worse laptop as well. So it‘s basically a lose lose situation in most cases. Those devices are great for some people, but can‘t compete with the iPad as a tablet, not at all. And now to my final point: Serif, with Affinity Photo and Designer, showed that such a device, a device designed for a different kind of interaction which is more simple and intuitive, can indeed run really powerful software that is actually optimized for an intuitive touch experience. And that‘s AWESOME! The iPad with those apps is now super unique and no other device can compete. The iPad doesn‘t replace a computer, and Apple even said that they will be continuing the macOS system as they would be without the iPad! But the iPad can replace a computer for CERTAIN taskst which it is well designed for and in some cases is even better suited for. Things like drawing, illustrating, doing graphic design, even editing photos, are all professional tasks where the iPad shines with it‘s form factor, touch interactions and Apple Pencil. **And software that is designed for it from the ground up was key for all that!!!**
@Vall_Ey6 жыл бұрын
100% completely agree, I already buy convertible laptop for drawing and the experience is worse than tablet, even it's low end android tablet. (Actually the device is good, but the OS is worse)

sensoriussupremus Porting some huge professional programs sounds easy but isn’t. I could well imagine that they have plans for it or are even working on it. But such complex applications take lots of time to plan, design and finally develop, easily multiple years. So IF they are planing it or even already designing/developing it, it could still take years for a public release. And Apple would not tease any work in progress so we really can just wait and see. On top of that, professional video editing software is even way more complex than photo editing software. We’ve seen how much time it took for professional photo editing software to come to the iPad, Serif worked on the iPad versions of their software for some years, so video editing software will at least take another couple of years to be more advanced than something like LumaFusion. You should also keep in mind that computers exist since decades and all those professional programs we nowadays use on them (Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Premier Pro, ...) all took many many years to develop, evolve and improve, for them to be at a level they are today. And iPad is still quite a new platform compared to computers. And porting a computer software to iPad is not easy at all, since the platform is really different, as I explained in my comment. The WHOLE interface has to be rethought, pretty much like Serif had to do it, but for video editing it’s just even more complex. The iPad and its iOS are evolving, the applications for it as well. And we’re going to see more and more on it in the next few years, hopefully. And as a final note, Apple is making an amazing platform and wants third party developers to do amazing things on it. We’ve seen how much Apple pushes developers, and I could well imagine that they’re NOT going to do something like Final Cup Pro for iPad but some amazing third party developers will make something amazing. We already have LumaFusion which is the most powerful mobile video editing software. And Serif, who exist for quite some time already, started out with their Affinity product line in 2014 I think (and it’s what really made them popular) and did some huge stuff within the last 4 years, and we’ll see many other great teams doing amazing stuff for iPad. We can expect a lot of professional software to come to the iPad, but we have to give it some time. :)

I’ve just got this app, and am learning how to use it. I have used Serif software for many years and have never faulted it! Not only does it do everything you want it to do, but it is a fraction of the cost of the other high-end apps that it replicates without any problems. Thanks for sharing this great overview, and I hope it encourages people to get the app.

I too recently bought the IPad 2018 about a week ago as an amateur artist (very amateur lol), and it is absolutely amazing! There is no other drawing tablet for this price that are nearly this amazing to use! Procreate and the Apple Pencil as a combo are so wonderful to draw with, and it runs so well with very little lag or parallax. The screen is the perfect size (if you’ve used the iPad Pro or another larger drawing tablet it might seem a little small, but it is by no means crammed, but it is perfect for me in my opinion). Definitely worth it in my opinion, and this is coming from a broke teenager, so I make my purchases carefully! If it wasn’t worth it I would have returned it already! 😂

So....only 'low down' is... that it IS a good tablet app, adapted to the device... instead of those desktop clones... But I see your issue with the course.... Anyway, this gives you a chance of bumping both the desktop and the ipad version of the tutorial, if you produce an ipad oriented version as an extra... I'd call that an extra business opportunity + refresh/bump of the desktop tut sells. And u explain really well, so, kind of sells are expected.

Hi Brad, I just wanted to tell you I happened to catch this video of yours and finally started paying attention to Affinity software. All I can say is I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner. Designer and Affinity Photo are absolutely brilliant. So brilliant in fact that I am contemplating switching to their software entirely from Adobe‘s. I have used Adobe software ever since I have been a designer. It’s great stuff as we all know, but Affinitys ability to work across all my devices is a huge development. Essentially, a game changer. My question to you is, I’m more than willing to use Affinity photo for my photographic image based work. The only missing link for me is what is the best approach for dealing with my photography shoots. I am heavily invested in Adobe light room. What would you recommend as an alternative to light room if I decide to no longer subscribe to Adobe creative cloud? I also wanted to mention, that I think you are really good at what you do. Your instructional videos are very informative and engaging. Well done!

Now that I've had a couple weeks to use this app, I'm having some new opinions about it. On the desktop, it's still not useful to me because I still have Illustrator, Photoshop, and also Serif's DrawPlus which all do something better. But on iOS, it's quickly become my go to app. I used to shrug at the notion that it merged raster and vector into a single app. Now, I feel like this is pretty cool. But only because of how I work on the iPad. 99% of what I do on the iPad is digital painting, drawing, and sketching whereas I do all of that on my desktop, but also I do all the heavy editing there as well. The ipad does well with the drawing/sketching/painting, but it's faster to do the other stuff on the desktop. It turns out that I do a lot of sketching in raster layers, then quickly ink those ideas in vector layers. And by the time I'm done, I've gone back and forth a lot, mixing vectors with rasters to create a final piece. It's a way of working that I've never really done on the desktop and it's actually fun. My wife had been using Sketchbook 4 which she found easy to use, but performance was hit and miss. I was trying to get her to use Procreate but she hated the UI and the fact that the layers won't stay open. I agree with her about that, but the performance is far superior. Then came Designer I started really pushing her to use it primarily and she resisted like crazy because once she learns one thing, she doesn't want to bother to learn something else. Especially something more complex like Designer. But I insisted. Now she is using it daily and she stopped complaining. LOL I'm the kind of person that likes to pick up a good user manual and read it. I stop to test everything interesting and go right back to the manual. So, I jump in and teach her cool tricks here and there. Designer is actually full of tricks. Once you learn enough of them, the workflow becomes smooth. So, Designer has become the go to app for both of us now on the iPad Pro. There are glitches here and there. Editing anchor points, and also just moving things has like a delay...then they JUMP to the new position. If I edit to fast, grabbing objects, many, many times it will stretch an object rather than moving it. Which reminds me of a cool trick. Use two fingers to hold the screen, then drag an object with the stylus to duplicate it. It works, but many times, it stretches an object rather than moving it. It might be a performance issue. My tablet is the first gen iPad Pro 12.9 so maybe a newer iPad Pro does better. All in all, I'm glad I bought this app. I wasn't planning to. My experience with Affinity Photo was not good at all. I returned it within minutes. But after Designer, I bought it again. They've resolved some of the bugs, but it doesn't have all the gestures that Designer has. They'll probably come at some point. I find myself wishing that Photo and Designer were actually just one app. The raster stuff in Designer is excellent, but last night I reached for a magic wand and it wasn't there. I had drawn all of these fish with black eyes. I wanted to select all the black eyes and knock them out to the back ground. No magic wand, and no option to select all black on a layer rather than just the area that I touched. I ended up doing all of them one by one. Probably could have opened the document in Photo, and the option is "probably" there. I'm have to test that out to night. To see how fluid it is to work back and forth between the two apps on a single piece of art.

Being mainly a vector tool and lossless scaling to your hearts desire, what will happen to scaling and losslessness if you add a pixel layer? Will the pixel based layer not loose their quality as you scale it up? Hope I am making sense! Greetings from Norway

The pixel layer will not scale well, it will get grainy as you scale.

Was looking for a robust vector app for iPad. The free Adobe Illustrator Draw app is actually good, especially for a free app, but it doesn't have the fine tune features I wanted, and ironically Affinity is a lot closer to Adobe Illustrator's desktop program than Adobe Illustrator Draw. I like to use this for vectors and Procreate for non-vector digital paintings & sketches.

Photoshop is comming to the ipad in 2019 so I guess Adobe will make somthining simmilar to this app that you showed. Also tomorrow the new ipad will be announced! I will combine it with the app that you just showed and procreate!

Hi Brad, nice video. Could you check the app, is there ‘recolor artwork’ feature like in adobe illustrator? Because that feature always help a lot when design the alternate color.

I was so excited about Affinity Designer on the iPad that I bought it even though I have the iPad Air which is not supported 😩 At least I got the discounted price.

Does it have a ‘wire frame’ mode?.... like the 'View > Outline' in the desktop version. Thanks.

Hey Brad, just curious, are you still using a matte screen protector on your iPad Pro? Also, are you importing you AD artwork into Animate CC to animate it? If so, can you explain how you do it (i.e. format, layers)?
