Lovely tutorial and shapes, and I would love to see similar tutorial for Inkscape as I do not have Affinity Designer at the moment.

Noted! I will put my thinking cap on and see how it can be done in Inkscape...

Fantastic mind-bending demo. TY for the introduction to the power of Symbols! Would there be any difference in how you would go about doing these designs (or knot designs) given the new v2 Shape Builder tool?

Thank you... and no... I would still try and keep it like this - unless you have a more complex overlapping of shapes. Then I would create the gaps with the shape builder tool... a video is in the pipeline already. ;)

Any chance you can show how to do this as a rope knot? Like a granny knot.

It would be a different approach as the pattern is different with the overlaps and looping. You could make it with one symbol, duplicated, flipped vertically, and then both duplicated and flipped, horizontally. Duplicate the line, trim it, adjust it and set it to erase for the overlaps. Turn off the sync and turn off the visibility of some of the erase lines. [I just did a solid line in this sample. You could use a vector brush to make it look more like robe.] imgur.com/a/xyPDqhS
