I am a U.S. citizen and have been living in central Chile for 22 years. My life here is much better than it would be in the U.S.. My income is my Social Security Retirement of just over US$1000 which more than covers all my expenses of groceries, apartment rent and my car. As I have become a permanent resident and am over 65 years of age I have full and free access to government health care (Fonasa). The Chilean govt. does not tax my retirement income from the USA! Life for me here is very good and yes, being able to speak Spanish is a definite plus but I did not speak that language when I first arrived...immersion is a great teacher of language! BTW we have full marriage equality in Chile. Please feel free to ask about my experience here.

Jeremy, I found your information very enlightening. I was very happy to hear that one’s social security would not be taxed (I just turned 70 last June). I am terrified at the prospect of a second Trump Presidency. Is there anyway I can communicate further with you as I have many more questions I would love to ask you about. I wish continued happiness and hope to get in touch with you soon. Regards Arthur.

As a tour guide based in Bogota (Colombia) and specialized in leading tours for LGBTQ+ people in my city there are several things that I can add and clarify about Colombia in general and cities in particular: -Crime: It's true that there's crime in Colombia but if I compare the numbers with American cities like Chicago, St Louis or Detroit, colombian cities are safer, as long as you use your common sense and take basic precautions you'll be fine. -English/Spanish speaking: Learning spanish shouldn't be seen as a downside, totally the opposite. If you learn spanish you'll be able to travel all over LatinAmerica. Bogota is considered to B the best city in the world to learn spanish, not that fast speakers, the city is affordable and the way they speak it is clear un general. I follow a couple of expat youtubers 1) a guy from kentucky and 2) a gay guy from The Netherlands, they both learned spanish really fast because they went to the right cities, now they both make content in spanish because they speak it perfectly. In general people in ther mid 20s and early 30s are decent english speakers because in most colombian universities is mandatory to pass an english test to graduate. -Gay rights: Not only gay marriage, there's full equality of rights in favor of LGBTQ people in Colombia. You can adopt children, affiliate your partner to your health care, we have inheritance rights, you can donate blood, as a trans person you can easily change your name and gender on the ID. In my work as a guide I met several travelers that came to Colombia specially to adopt children or for and easy surrogacy process because the rights that I mentioned are granted for colombians and foreigners alike. -Gay scene/cities: Bogota has the biggest gay scene in the country: We have probably around 50 gay bars, 6 saunas in the gay district and several more in the rest of the city, several cruising clubs, a S&M decorated cruising club, a tiny gay mall, gay cafes, gay restaurants, a gay pastry shop, you can go to see drag shows with locals and international queens from Drag Race (actually several international seasons of the show were filmed here), there are places to meet twinks, bears, mature men, etc, so basically Bogota has something for everyone. Medellin is the second gay friendliest city in Colombia with a decent offer of cruising clubs, gay discos and saunas, I consider Cali the third gay friendliest city, this one is perfect for heat weather lovers and black/brown men lovers, a downside is the crime rate and the way they speak spanish, it's fast and they use a lot of slangs. Cartagena is very famous because is the most visited city on caribbean Colombia, beautiful colonial city, the downsides are the way they speak spanish, sometimes it's too hot and is not that gay friendly wich is unfortunately a caribbean issue. Locals won't be physically or verbally aggresive but they could make fun of you in a disrespectful way. If you need extra info, hit me up on my IG: lostoursdejuan

So if you like Italian guys go to Uruguay or Argentina they’re all there but they speak Spanish not Italian lol. If you like Brazilian guys but don’t want to live in a Third World country, come to Portugal because so many Brazilian guys come here to improve their lives, live and work in Europe, and they often are willing to party with Americans for a little generosity. If you are considering moving to Brazil and concerned about crime, I would not consider Rio, São Paulo nor Salvador. Brazil has plenty of safer cities to live, but it feels like people only talk about Rio and São Paulo and, based on these 2 cities, thinks the rest of the country is entirely like that, which really bugs me. Consider moving to Florianópolis in the south, beautiful city/beaches, beautiful people, plenty of things to do and much safer, also, Vitoria, in the southeast region, in the northeast, I would consider moving to João Pessoa. Brazil is not Rio and São Paulo, only.

Costa Rica. Very "gay" friendly, stunning nature, hot guys, and way more affordable than my own country, the Netherlands. I lived there for almost two years together with the locals. Unfortunately it isn't the easiest country to stay for a long time. I'm a proud, whelty Dutch man and there are not that many countries on the planet where everything is so well organized. That's a bit of a problem. No matter where, it's always going to be a big culture shock. Even in the USA.
@christheskibum4970

As a ten year gringo resident here in Costa Rica, I have to add my two cents to your comment. It is true that the country is very gay friendly and I have never felt discrimination from anyone here. And the country in general is very safe. But sadly, it's no longer as affordable as it once was for us norteamericanos at least! The exchange rate vs the dollar has absoultely plunged over the past two years and the government doesn't want to do anything about it, presumably to try to "insulate" ticos from American orignated inflation. But for those of us whose income is in dollars, it has amounted to about a 40% reduction in our buying power and has made living here almost impossible. By contrast, prices in Colombia are about one half what they are here. My husband and I are seriously considering moving there! Oh, and hot guys? Not so much in Costa Rica. But Colombia has them in spades!
@viderethevaccinatorfromhol7536
@viderethevaccinatorfromhol7536 Ай бұрын
@christheskibum4970 That's sad to hear. To be honest, the U.S. culture is the biggest downside for me. Costa Rica is very Americanized, with those ridiculous shopping malls where most locals can't afford to shop and fast-food restaurants on every corner. I lived in Heredia with my two "local" Tico friends in an apartment that they shared. One is a teacher, and the other one is a lawyer. I loved every second of it. We didn't live in a gated community, but I always felt accepted and very safe, even by the older, more religious people. They took me to their family gatherings and shared everything they had. I was planning to buy a property in the Guanacaste area, but unfortunately, I became very ill (neurodegenerative disease), and I had to move back to the Netherlands. I was homesick and cried for almost a year. Maybe it was different for me as a Western European? I sold my company when I was in my late 30s, and I have never worked a day since then. Money is just money. It has been six years, so things have probably changed by now. For me, it's not an easy destination to travel to. My friends visited me twice here in the Netherlands, and they would give everything to move here. I tried, but it's extremely complicated for non-EU citizens. For American expats, it's way easier. But I'm still planning to go back for a few months this time because my time is running out. You are lucky, guys. Enjoy life 🥰

In terms of affordability CR doesn't make the list. Also, crime is a lot higher than is generally reported. The police are corrupt so many people don't even bother to report when they get robbed. Insofar as 'hot guys' is concerned that's a relative term. I'll take Colombians over Costa Ricans any day of the week.

His entire close family relocated to different states in the USA, mostly to NYC. He, and his family members can't praise enough and can't stop talking about the wonders of Argentina. How beautiful it is, how "European" it looks, what a bonanza of jobs and financial opportunities, what an amazing gay scene. They keep complaining about how awful, dirty, noisy, expensive--and irony of ironies, how "diverse" NYC is. Which makes me "wonder" why are they here when he and his entire family could have such a "wonderful" life in Argentina? Go figure!!

If you are an old gay guy that is a 3 or 4 out 10 wanting some action with a 7, 8, 9 or a perfect 10 in the Philippines, then that would be indeed transactional. Filipino gay men here would also want a 7, 8, 9 or 10 foreign guy for them, someone that is equivalent with the way they look at themselves. A lot of gay guys here are more into looks that what is in your bank account. Sorry Filipino gay men are really vain, specially the really good looking ones, a lot of them really don't care how much money you have, you just have to be really good looking to them. Grindr is really just for hookups. Dating is really a whole different ball game. Effort is the key! There are male gigolos' in Grindr or other dating apps in the Philippines, if they are cute and ripped and keeps on messaging an old guy in dating apps more often than not they are gigolos, but of course not all. As for those wanting trans girls, it is easy to get a trans girl here. As for straight man wanting a straight woman, it's usually not that hard, a lot of girls here want someone who is polite, caring, with good family values. You don't have to be a multimillionaire to marry a Filipina, you just have to respect and love them and their families.

@@1adamgarcia2003 just to be clear here the expat/immigrant thing as far as I’m concerned is complete BS I was talking about the issue as a third person observer that in current times the word immigrant has negative connotations so people will use the term ‘expat’ to make themselves feel better. I’ve seen a fair few Costa Del Sol Brits look aghast when someone suggests their uneasiness about immigration levels in the UK is a tad ironic given their own status in Spain. How you personally ‘self describe’ is entirely up to you and however long or short your stay is I hope it’s a pleasant one.

Yes Europe (French, Spain) maybe affordable but still the language barrier, most people won't speak English even they can/understand. One country maybe you not even think about, Indonesia, it might sound crazy thinking about conservative Muslim of majority population, depends where you live specially Bali (predominantly Hindus), you gonna spend way less than Thailand/Philippines, better option on public transportation, specially in the capital city Jakarta, the longest BRT system in the world, better infrastructure, Trans Java toll road (if you like road trips), good Railway system and option of train within Java island, the first Fast train in South East Asia will be completed in November, 17.000 Islands to explored, mountains, beaches, Savannah, temples, waterfalls, lakes, you named it. Yes,no gay marriage, but low crime, as long as no PDA, people don't really care if you're Gay. Just like any other places as long as you respect local custom you'll be fine. Gay bar exist in certain places (shocking) actually LGBT is part of the culture in a way a bit different than Western gay culture. Bali island has more to offer for single or gay couple, people come and stay from all over the world (Australia Europe South/North America) English is not widely spoken but even local who don't speak will help you in any way the can. Most people in a big cities/tourist area speak English, minimum they understand. Try visit at least for 2 weeks and you can see for your self.

I’d take issue with your notion that there’s a language barrier in Spain. The country is full of expats from all over Europe and the common language is English. It may be more difficult with smaller places and in rural areas but in all the major cities and the tourist costas you will find English widely spoken ( though attempts at Spanish are always appreciated)
@pbohearn
@pbohearn 2 ай бұрын
@@gerardmackay8909 I would take issue with the notion that it is very easy to communicate in English in Spain. It’s widely known that the Spanish don’t bother to learn a second language, much like Americans, because their language is like number two or three of the most common languages spoken in the world. Portugal students are required to take English; not so in Spain. You may find people more bilinguals in the big cities like Madrid and Barcelona, especially in areas that serve tourists, and in the service sector, but outside of that you need to learn some. Otherwise, you can live in an area of the Costa Del sol that is primarily populated by retired expats where they have British pubs you can go to, but that’s like moving Britain down to Spain. Or going to Mexico and just staying in the resort area of Cancun. Yeah you’re gonna hear a lot of English but you’re not gonna be in Mexico really . These retirement areas are little bubbles of England. It also has high taxes, and Barcelona has a fair amount of crime. There’s also a lot of fraud related to real estate, etc. so you need to be very careful about investing. Lately there’s been an anti tourist swelling up because there are too many tourists visiting, overrunning the major tourist areas and vacation Islands,it’s gotten unmanageable. the EU countries where English is commonly spoken would include Netherlands, especially Amsterdam, Switzerland, Vienna, the island of Malta, and the Scandinavian countries.

You don’t say where you are now… But I will say to you , if you currently have a really good job with decent prospects in your life , I would suggest against switching. However, if you have skills ( decent degree), you should be able to find a decent job fairly quickly. The cost of living is low, housing is cheap, crime is pretty high…..but you need to make sure you live in a gated community. There is a large emerging Black middle class, so it’s a good time to move. The downside is the political corruption. It’s rife. And it affects everyday folks. Electricity is rationed . So you’ll need a nice house with solar panels and battery storage etc. The weather is stunning. People are not racist…..regardless of what you may have heard.

I live in Portugal and it’s considered the least expensive country in western Europe. The wages are low generally, which keeps prices low except that a lot of foreigners have moved here driving up the prices for real estate and rentals and that doesn’t sit well with the Portuguese people. The weather climate geography is very much like California, it’s on the ocean. There’s a lot of really interesting old towns you can visit and explore and the people are generally friendly and welcoming and there’s very little violent crime. Downsides are that although they rebuilding the cities are old and parts of the city are decrepit with buildings vacant, and the bureaucracy is very dysfunctional if you have to interact with it. Very gay friendly, but it is a conservative country. they speak Portuguese and you would need to learn some to get to know the locals although a lot of younger Portuguese do you speak English. Porrto is a particularly beautiful city, but Lisbon is the big city. I like it here. I don’t love it. I think there are better places in Europe to live with a higher quality of life. Those places would include Vienna, Switzerland, Amsterdam, the Scandinavian countries, and Malta as the people are all bilingual everybody speaks English.

Most relationships in these situations are transactional. It's always been that way. Look at pedastry in ancient Greece. An older man would woo a younger man with gifts and whatnot and then the boy would stay with the older man until he got too old or the older man died. Even if you are the same age you will be the one who pays most of the time. My partner is a professional teacher in the Philippines. His salary is a fraction of mine. It's not realistic to expect him to shoulder half the expenses, instead he cooks and bakes which works for me.

Thanks for your video. Not very informative in terms of cost of living, taxes, health care, employment, amenities, gay rights, and any potential risks and vulnerabilities, especially for elderly LGBQTF+ community members etc., etc. Let's face it. The LGBQTF+ community members are clanish, exclusive most than not, judgemental no matter the country. I am a 68yo gay Guatemalan expat who have lived in NYC for almost forty three years now. In terms of the gay scene, socio-economic status and racial issues, I feel the ordeals experienced by non-caucasian, lower and middle class, "average Joes" = not GQ models and/or gym rats, are exactly the same ordeals I encountered when I was growing-up back in my homeland Guatemala. Also, as per different videos I have seen portraying elderly LGBQTF+ community members expats, unless we have a substantial discretionary income to live comfortably and relatively safe abroad, and even in our countries of origin, we usually find many more difficulties and risks than younger gay expats. Another disturbing fact is elderly gay men usually fall prey to financial exploitation by oportunistic hustlers, the local authorities and many other shady characters.
