Nice review, James! I have several packages of this stuff, and I just got one of the A5 sized notebooks, and I really like the paper... but then, I was also a fan of Cosmo Air Light. I have reason to believe that this paper actually comes from the same press as Cosmo, and it's simply branded under a new name. In any case, it's a great paper if you don't mind the soft surface and tendency to pick up hand oils, and I usually don't. I wish that there was also a pure white version like Cosmo Air Snow.

Sakae is printed on the back of my little Tomoe River notebook but far more ghosting there. Just ordered and excited to try it out. And I loved the Delta Spacca too - I purchased it for a birthday gift last month after watching your review :)

I love this paper, I also have the notebooks. If you love sheen and shimmer this is the paper for you, it makes Rhodia seem quite pedestrian in comparrision, If anything you need to be a little less liberal with the flow, Lamy DL finishes almost entirely gold/green.

Nice review James. Funny enough, I have a sample of 5 pages I got with a recent order, but have just not tested them out yet. The sheets are 8" wide and a little more than 5 1/2" wide and have 3 styles on the page. Left is dot grid, middle is 5 mm grid, and right is plain. Now I'm gonna have to test them out!!

Hi James. I’m really enjoying your content! I use Iroful frequently, as I am a big letter writer. It is remarkable paper and I love what it does for sheen, shimmer and shading as you pointed out. The only thing I will add is that it is relatively absorbent paper, as opposed to something like Tomoe River 52 gsm. That is not a bad thing, but it does mean that your fine line might look a bit more like a medium line on Iroful. Cosmo Air Snow, which I also use is similarly absorbent, but does not widen the line quite as much. Again, this is not a bad thing, but it might be something to consider if you write very small. Thanks again!

I have been looking for a paper that will withstand a fountain pen ink. This seems to perform very well. It is the right size for writing letters and sending them abroad. I have added it to my cart at Amazon. Thank you for the review and suggestion, James.

It is susceptible to hand oils much like Cosmo Air Light, but I don’t mind that. I just use a sheet of paper as a blocker while I write to prevent that problem. I love it ♥️

I’d recommend B7 Natural paper. It’s less susceptible to finger oil

Nice review. I've been using this paper for a couple months and really like it. It will bring out the best in your inks. I'd hesitate to use it in notebook form because of hand oil issues. I use another sheet of paper to keep my hand off the page. Otherwise, I get patches of hand prints where ink just won't write.

Good tip on avoiding spots. Is it prone on both sides, or one more than the other like some other papers?

😆 Warning: it’s a possible side effect. Shading is my preference for most inks as well.

This looks very promising. My handwriting always ends up having an uphill slant unless I have lined paper or can put a guide sheet under a blank sheet. Do you happen to know whether a guide shert with fairly dark lines would show through under this paper? Thanks, James!

Very interesting, thank you! All the inks looked gorgeous, and I was surprised to see such sheening. I do have two questions, both related to the coating. First, is drying time significantly slower than on other papers we use? Second, does the coating interfere with the resistance of waterproof inks like Noodler’s X-feather Blue or Platinum Carbon Black? I have another paper recommendation for you, this time for rapid writing like for lecture or meeting notes or fast journaling. For this application, I want a full-sized (A4 = 8-1/2 x 11 inch) white paper with a faint dot grid and no ghosting or bleedthrough on the flip side. Ideally, it will come 3-hole-punched so it can go right into a binder with no fuss. It also needs to be printer-friendly just in case. Amazingly, Amazon came through again. It’s made by a company with the delightful name, “Sort Out My Life.” The US Amazon sells it for $20 for 200 sheets/400 pages. The dot grid is just the right size and faintness and is printed on both sides. The paper is 120 gsm, so I can write on both sides. If you’re interested, you should be able to find it by searching on the company name. If you don’t want the 3-hole-punch, Sort Out My Life also sells this paper unpunched for the same price in a separate listing. The company also has listing for paper with other hole punch patterns and printed formats as well as everything in A5 size.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to look into that. As to the drying time, it's probably slightly longer than say, Rhodia or Tomoe River, and as you could see, I did accidently smear an ink that hadn't dried, but I don't know which or how long after. I'll have to try a waterproof/documental ink and see. I don't think any of those are (and I should add that to the next paper review as part of the test, thanks!).

It's very high quality, but know that it doesn't really show the "true" color of inks. Compared to the Tomoe River or Midori, which are less absorbent, the Iroful really sucks certain colors out of the inks and leaves behind a ton of bluer tones. It makes inks look completely different in swatches compared to other papers, almost unrecognizable. Personally, I'm not a fan of the velvety texture and prefer smoother paper, but I also use fine nibs. Just personal preference, though. Lots of people love it!

Ooo. Paper that disappointed me! So coated that I couldn't run it through a printer to get personalized stationery that had crisp lines unblurred colors. Not only that, someone had handled the paper in such a way that my correspondents and I could see the fingerprints when I wrote over them. And, now, I have some JetPens Cosmo that seems a not-quite-so-bad version. Ugh. Ink did present well, when not revealing the identity of the people handling the paper. But, I write all this in wrath without listening to you yet, James. So, here goes . . . .

Well, I did say in the review that if you had a differing opinion or experience, share it, and I did mean that. 😆 I didn’t think about what a printer might do to it. I used to do that, especially when we had an inkjet. We had to go to laser when we had too many students in the house printing papers (and now we’re back to that). I wonder what a laser printer does to this paper? I did have a bit of the finger smudge issue, which I mentioned. It was mainly one particular ink, though.

@@JG3Reviews And, I did note the positive qualities of no bleed through and showing ink properties nicely when I used the Iroful. So, yes, I affirm your positive review! ... I like to put letterhead on my correspondence paper, which did teach me that well-coated paper might not serve that need well. Midori and Life do so much better for what I want, but without such good sheening. Ah well, let's keep the adventure going!

Only one pen in the entire list is a clone (and when I review it, that will be the major criticism). There is one that is in a vintage style patterned after a 100+ year old design, which itself was derivative when new. “All those” seems hyperbolic.
