Trying watercolor for the first time at age 71. Videos like this are a true time and money saver. I'm in a class, so that helps, but so much is done at home, where advice comes from YT. Thanks for this one. I appreciate it

Yea! I take a watercolor color class and asked the teacher which brushes to use. She said she will address it in a later class. I looked for it now and found your video. I am so grateful for the clear, concise explanations. I want to give you a big kiss on the cheek! Thank you!

Very informative. I love Princeton brushes because they are well made, last and there is such a wide variety so I can find just what I want, with the exception of very small daggers

Kris, by far the most informative and useful watercolor brush video I have seen. I appreciate you actually demonstrating the brushes using paint! And seeing the results of leaving brushes in water AT ALL was fair warning. Thank you for your time preparing this. New subscriber here.

which would you recommend for a beginner; princeton elite, princeton neptune, or silver black velvet ?
@KrisDeBruineStudio2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rowena. I would actually recommend BOTH Aqua Elite and Neptune (or equivalent). Neptune is soft and is great for washes. It mimics squirrel hair. Conversely, Aqua Elite is stiffer and is great for details. It mimics sable. I usually start a painting with soft squirrel hair brushes (i.e. Neptune) and move to stiff sable brushes. Hope this helps.

Thanks Ali. I've really come to prefer the Princeton brand. They are good quality, but less expensive than other brands. Have a great day.

Princeton Neptune is excellent for me...except the tip isn't maintained well
@KrisDeBruineStudio2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Because the Neptune brushes are so soft, they don't maintain a sharp point. I use them for big washes so that doesn't matter too much. The Aqua Elites are better if you need a sharp point.

Could you please clear my doubt? number 12 brush from camelin and other brands are same..we should choose brush by their shapes only not by numbers mentioned on the brush?
@KrisDeBruineStudio2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sobiya. I am not familiar with the Camelin brand of brushes, so I can't say if the sizes are similar to other brands. Some brands use different numbering systems. You will just have to try different brushes to find out what you prefer. I like to use larger brushes (mostly Princeton brand). I like round size 10, 12 and 14. I also use #6 Quill which is even bigger. I have a video on that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXPUp5Skl8xggpI

I am glad to see someone NOT recommend $100 uber fancy brushes that are outside of the means if many new artists....

I've tried some of the Uber expensive ones...and keep coming back to this brand. 😂
