Hello Mark. Just found you on KZbin today, I'm so glad I did. I have two Grandsons that want me to teach them knitting and crocheting. My Grandsons will be happy to see another man doing what they want to learn. We even live in the same state which I'm sure will make the boys realize these arts are perfect to learn no matter what anyone else thinks. The boys are 9 and 13 and ready to start their learning. Thank you.

I use a smaller pegboard for hanging my fixed needles (which I keep in the original packaging). Makes them much easier to arrange & find what I need since I have numerous lengths in the same size. I store my yarns with small cedar planks. I can't stand the smell of moth repellent. I got these great cubes with doors to store my yarns, and I hang project totes on the handles.. Love the idea of using a spare room with pegboard, but the only room that's available is always sunny. 🤷🏻♀️

Ceder blocks on hanger hooks (aka closet ceder blocks) are great natural moth repellents. Plus once the scent fades you can use a little sandpaper to bring it back. The ceder come in a variety of shapes for tucking into drawers and on closet shelves. They can be found in closet sections of most stores and online. I love your pegboard vertical storage system so much. Thank you for sharing your idea. ✌️💜🧶

This is an amazing, creative idea! It makes finding the specific yarn super simple & all I'd have to do is hang some cedar blocks in amongst the yarn. I love the scent of cedar but moths & pests hate it. Thank God, I've also never had a problem with it but prevention is better than trying to recover damage. I also use a no rinse wool wash with lavender in it. It smells fresh & clean but also helps prevent damage from pests. I absolutely love your videos! ❤ Currently my yarn is in bins (less than ideal but it does keep it safe & clean) I always place a cedar block in each bin to keep the yarn fresh & put up a keep out sign for pests.

Love your yarn room set up. Beautiful. I use scented soaps to protect my stash, which is quite vast. This includes partially used bars when I get bored of one scent and want another. Wrap them in parchment or wax paper. Most of my soaps come in pretty paper wrappers so I just swap the used one for the next new wrapper. I also have some felted shapes that have lavender or cedar in them, but some are unscented and I spray them with a scent I like, perfume or room spray. I try staying away from commercial chemicals and this seems to be working for me.

What about a picture look book? Take pics of each skein/colorway and keep them in a folder on your phone or print them out and put them in a binder to flip through. Could also do a short snip of the yarn in the binder to get an idea of the feel if you need that for decision making. Then you won't have to pull your whole stash out to see if you have a yarn that will work for a project

Question on open yarn storage: how do you handle dust getting onto yarn?
@MakerMarkKnitsСағат бұрын
Great question - I haven't encountered dust on the yarn. I keep the door to the room closed, and we don't have forced air in the house, so I think that helps! I also keep the yarn moving. I make sure to inspect it, maybe rearrange it, and use portions of it every couple of months.
@yarra35218 күн бұрын
Very low practical question; doesn't your yarn get incredibly dusty? And is the spray and disks also effective against carpit beetles and paper fish?
@MakerMarkKnits18 күн бұрын
The discs list that they repel moths and carpet beetles (and larvae) and the spray lists moths, bedbugs, and pests. I haven't had a dust issue yet. I keep the door to this room closed and I also keep the yarn moving around - every 2-3 months I try to give some away to friends who might need the color or weight - or I attempt to use parts up for stashbusting projects. If I don't have any present need for the yarn, I at least check in on it, spray for pests, and perhaps reorder or reorganize the peg boards!

@MakerMarkKnits I use vaccum sealing storage bags (do you know them? They are made for space efficient storage of duvets and pillows or winter clothing.) for long term storage. I get a package with two small ones (pillow size) and a large one (single duvet size) for about 5$. A small one can hold 2-3 sweater quantities of yarn depending on your size. It's really handy if you are moving, or if you have limited space in your house. To give an indication of their efficiency; I'm currently storing 2 duvets and 3 pillows on a single shelf in my 2 foot wide IKEA closet, that's a third of space they normally take up. They are also very practical if have gotten pest inside you house or fear that you have and have to go throught the process of freezing all your yarn and knitted garments. Or if you just want to pack up you winter sweaters safely over the summer.

Great question! The spray actually has a note about it being ok for dogs over 1 year old. Both products should stay out of reach of cats and puppies. I keep the discs on the top of bookcases and the top shelves of closets, and when I spray down the yarn, I make sure that the cats are out of the room, then I keep the door closed for the rest of the day to let things settle and air out. Safety first!!

How do you keep dust off the yarn please!? Another great video, so appreciated- thanks from 🇬🇧
@MakerMarkKnits19 күн бұрын
That's a good question! I haven't had dust collect on mine - I try to keep the yarn moving, either by using it up for projects or finding things I can pass on to a friend who might need the color or fiber. I also keep the door to this room closed - I wouldn't want to put my yarn in a high traffic area because I think that would lead to more dust and dander collecting on it. All of that to say, so far I haven't run into any issue with dust on the yarn - mostly because I don't let any of it sit for too too long 🙂
@JaneMurray-di3gq17 күн бұрын
I recycle clear plastic bags which I use to cover my wool/yarn. Since I keep a lot of my wool in hanging shoe bags, I only need to cover the top of the yarn. So any bits of plastic wrap will suffice.
