Thank you so much for actually showing how to do the magic knot at the end of the row in changing colors. That’s is exactly how instructional work should be done. I was struggling with doing it until now. I am making a lap blanket for senior citizens homes and I have lots of color changes. Be well and stay safe!

Thank you for the magic knot! I’ve always either woven in ends or worked over them and only used the magic knot to join new yarn of the same color and always mid row. I’ve NEVER seen the trick to join at the beginning of a row to change color! Saving your video for future reference. Now I want time make something with stripes just to test it out!

Magic knots can absolutely be a game changer if the yarn weight and fiber content "play well" with them. The Russian join can also makes a secure, neat transition if you don't want any knots in certain projects (e.g., baby blanket, chemo cap, preemie cap, knitted knockers, etc.) Crocheting the tail into your work (either alternating it with the new working yarn or combined) can also work well. When those options aren't feasible, I find that weaving ends as you go (WEAYGo 😄) is well worth the up-front time and effort because doing so keeps the WIP much neater, without an increasingly cumbersome bunch of tails to work around. With WEAYGo, one is more likely to do a better quality job on each tail than having to do them all later after project burnout has set in. Also, WEAYGo provides an occasional break from marathon stitching, which can benefit the joints and muscle groups involved. Finally, as stated in the video, WEAYGo ensures that when you're done stitching, you're done with the project 👍 (aside from washing/blocking it 😉)

My tip is coming from the knitting but works well for crochet too. I just work the tail with the working yarn and do 2 stitches. The stitches might be a bit thicker but no problem with dk and 4 ply. I can’t even unravel it when I do mistake and need to frog it, I have to cut it so it does work well! Work 2 stitches with the tail and simple cut it after👌

I’m always afraid of not calculating the yarn correctly when doing the magic knot at end of a row before switching to the next color, so I just cut and weave 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m finding out that I prefer to weave ends as I go so I’m not overwhelmed with the task at the end of the project and I also have a couple of favorite needles. I used to do this technique with the magic knot to change colors, but not so much anymore. I did it on a few blankets that I use at home frequently and within a year or so several of the knots came loose… The first time I thought maybe it was a characteristic specific to really fine merino, but it ended up happening with some of my more rustic wool and cotton items as well :( The tip you had for leaving a bit back after covering the tail with stitches to weave backwards is a great idea! I will start doing that from now on!

aaaah, thought that might happen with the fisherman's knot. Never tried it myself, but just doesn't seem very secure. Specially if you wash your work regularly. It'll come undone. I also cover my tail as I go and then just leave a piece to weave it back once and back again and for extra security I double knot the old colour and new colour together, tightly to the stitch, before working both ends in together. Need to get myself canvas needles though, those look awesome.

It makes such a big difference when you weave in ends as you go. I usually crochet 4 squares then weave in the ends as I go.

I knew the magic knot but had no idea how to make it sit neatly while starting the new row, so this is a complete lifesaver! I think I need to grab some of those needles too...🤔Thank you for this video, it's been so helpful!

Oh great googly moogly I needed this hack explained exactly the way you did. I am working an alpine stitch and I have FOUR ends to weave for each row 🤦🏽‍♀️ Thank you for showing us how to “time” the knot. That will save me endless amounts of time

Excellent tutorial, you show and explain it all so clearly, verbally and visually! I can't thank you enough for "just like tying a shoelace" for the magic knot. 😂 I have been struggling with this knot with other tutorials and their explanations: under this, cross over, through this, etc. I have had some minor strokes, and some things are still a problem for me. 😂 LOL, just like tying shoelace! WHY did no one else ever just say THAT?! Thank you for the end weaving solutions, I had not seen some of those before, either. 😊

I’m so glad you liked that bit ! You know what? Someone once asked me “what does tying like a shoelace mean?” 😆😆😆 so I guess it just makes sense for some of us ❤️❤️ I appreciate you telling me 🧶❤️

Thank you for this. I just found you and am delighted to subscribe because I love crochet and knitting but got depressed because I had never learned properly so had no option how to do all the finishing off bits that make such a difference to your work and how you feel about yourself when you are done. I especially love that you talk quietly and calmly throughout so your video is really pleasant to listen to as well S clear and informative. God bless you from Vera in Northern Ireland

Thank you for showing that hack! I am very familiar with the fisherman’s knot, but how you showed to apply it at the end of the row is a game changer for me! I recently participated in a crochet along for a temperature blanket, and because of all the color changes and the weaving ends, I didn’t want to do the constantly changing colors. So I just made each block of the month the same color. But now that I’ve seen this, this is absolutely a game changer for me! Thank you so much!!!

My paranoia/OCD will not allow me to use fishermans knots. I hadn't thought about weaving back and forth before. I will try that with my next project.

You must be my twin - I already decided that weaving them in as you go is the best policy. I also carry the end along whenever possible, and leave a long end so that I can weave it back in the other direction with a tapestry needle (AND I change direction twice!) I feel better knowing that I developed the same style as a pro.

Something I just learned and it obviously wont work for everyone, but as you work in each end pick a different person in your life to pray for. I find it changes my entire attitude, it is hard to be resentful and impatient when thinking about the people I love.

Thank you, I learned a new knot. I know a different which involves wrapping round the thumb. Sorry I can’t describe it! Good to know about the rule of three. I hate it that ends come out, especially with acrylic yarn that you can’t felt into your work
