The Afghanistan Women’s cricket team, which has been in exile in Australia for 3 years, have written a formal letter to the ICC demanding to be able to play internationally.
The story of Afghanistan Women’s cricket in recent years has been a tragic one.
Early in 2021, top Afghanistan women cricket players received national contracts for the first time.
Unfortunately, the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021 after two decades, as the US was withdrawing its troops from the country.
Unsurprisingly, the Taliban quickly began restricting the rights and freedoms of women, barring all females from secondary school and beyond, and ending all female participation in sports.
The Afghanistan Women’s Cricket team fled to Australia before they could play their first game. They have been in exile in Australia and in limbo for the past few years.
Australia, notably, is also the only country to refuse to hold bilateral series between their Men’s team and the Afghanistan’s in protest over Afghanistan’s policies.
Now, after the Afghan Men’s success at the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where they reached the semifinals, the Afghan women have written to the ICC asking for a women’s refugee team.
