Winter 1998, we were in North Eastern of Afghanistan, travelling in a convoy from Dushanbe in Tajikistan to Khandahar province. The journey was only 500 Kms. It had taken our convoy 10 solid days of driving through mud, sand storms and valleys . We were there with the International Red Cross Society to aid in an Emergency Rescue and Humanitarian effort to help 40k victims suffering from a major earthquake that killed 20K due to injuries and extreme cold weather. Already 23 years had passed. The poverty scenes are still fresh in my mind even till today. I fully admires the Afghan for their strengths in dire conditions throughout human history.

Before Americans started the war in Afganistan, it had been quite a developed country where women studied and taught at universities, worked as doctors, engineers and scientists. They used to wear European clothes, read books, and enjoy their family life. Their children used to receive all the necessary medical assistance The USSR supported Afganistan economically and politically. The Soviet Union built over 140 economic and cultural objects such as hydroelectrostations (e. g., Nagloo), tunnels (e. g., Salang), plants, bridges, schools, universities.hospitals, etc. With the Americans and Taliban the country was brought into the Middle Ages. What did the USA built for Afganistan? Actions speak louder than words.

Why are they so cruel to woman. It seems woman is nothing for them. They forgot that their mother itself is a woman. Woman must fight for the right and freedom if they dont want their daughter to be treated in the next generation. Back in 60's 70's they're not like this. Find the good path and believe which give you hope not sorrow like this.

Exactly, was looking for any comment which would mention the injustice against women, seems that you're the only one who's mentioned women...Others mention poor people but the message is a bit different - it is exactly about brutality towards women in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, the fates of Afghan women are terrible in the country and yes, women everywhere have to go a long way to make every woman in any place living under brutal conditions happy...

A serious movie from a troubled country and its troubled people, especially its womenfolk, in the conflicts raging between foreigners and freedom fighters, among freedom fighters of different ideologies and relgious schools, between the haves and havenots, between laymen, political and religious leaders, between menfolk and womenfolk. A movie done with great feeling and depth exposing the hardships womenfolk in general undergo and particularly women without men to take care of due to the ongoing conflicts keeping menfolk away from their homes. The medium of movie art has been used very powerfully by the director, the principal protagonist and the cinematographer of the film. Salaams to all of them. All reasonable men would wish that the sad land and its sad people, particularly their long-suffering womenfolk, find solutions to their problems depicted in the movie bringing peace and happiness to the deeply troubled land.

On A J Wajid's comment: First congratulation to Roya Sadat, the writer and producer of this film. This movie - if it depicted a reality in Afghanistan - shows a living hell on earth. Hunger all around for poor people, women and their children, war lords enjoying feast, husbands lost or killed or abducted leaving the wife and child helpless, local warlord out to exploit such women (only for food and medical aid to the dying child) by making them to smuggle opium across the boarder, a court in Iran not investigating the helplessness of the woman, and lawlessness all around not to stop this hell !!! Who is responsible for all this hell? USSR, USA or Afghan people? After all, it is not so bad in many other countries. Why is it in Afghanistan? Just look at the history - don't deny it - it was the land of Bamyan; the same people who are so prone today to mistreat women and their young children - not only their husbands but even their fathers (marrying against their wish etc) were very loving and kind hearted during Bamyan glory days (Chinese traveller Huen Tsiang writes an eye witness account of these very Afghan people). Why it was so then and it is not so today? Think yourself. Aghan people are basically brave, self respecting, loving and kind, hospitable even to guests, defying death for the sake of their dignity - today and during Bamyan days. The reality is: All human beings are basically same but their thinking make them so different from each other. I had tears for this woman - Afroz (?) - who is daughter of somebody (think her to be your daughter), loving sister of somebody, a loving mother of her child - son - think you were that child when young; God, have mercy on these women - who have no freedom to walk alone in parks, markets, public places etc. Why their rights as humans are denied to them? Are they not humans? Any thought - under whatever name or pretext - denying this right to our mothers and sisters, whether in Afghanistan or anywhere else, is a CRIME against 50% humanity. See this woman Afroz, she is sent to prison for life and her kid is made orphan - for no fault of her and for the crimes of others, warlords, narcotic smugglers, father pressed under a social culture, collaborating that woman who coaxed her to agree to smuggle.

+RakhmanovRecords Dr. Najibullah was in Power for 7 years he didn't do anything just killing innocent people who didn't believe in Communism. Neither USSR did anything good in Afghanistan nor USA. They both have their own plans. Those land mines they talk about in the movie are planted by USSR not USA plus USSR is the biggest producer of Landmines. I am not saying USA is good and USSR is bad. for war in Afghanistan, first we ourselves are responsible and then USSR and USA. It was USSR and USA's war and fight but picked the land for it in Vietnam and Afghanistan. We us Afghan all responsible for the war in our country. Some of us brought and invited USSR some invited USA, Some invited Pakistan, Some screw all three and filled their own pockets, and ordinary people didn't cared at all. Some were sleeping and still sleeping, some thought and still thinking " who gives a shit as long as I am not in trouble personally and I am making money out this." some think " I am too old for this shit I don't care who know if I am alive another year; after my death I don't give a shit if there is peace or war." We have these types people who born in this land and breath the air of this land but they don't care. how we supposed to expect things from USA or USSR. it's very rare you to fine 1% out of our total population that they care about this poor land. all they care just filling their pockets and accounts transfer the money in West and Arabic countries. All they think how to suck the blood out this poor country. Who made USA superpower or strong economy earth? who Made USSR another power, and good economy in the ? or England, Germany and so on? obviously their hard working population and people. There wasn't another USA to build today's USA or there USSR to build today's. Why we always like beggars expecting others to feed us, or do things for us. The one and the only one people who can change the faith Afghanistan are Afghans themselves, not Americans not Russian. Because of these two bulldogs there are tonnes problem in Middle east central Asia.
