They would've still been controlled mainly by the #Luftwaffe; the senior officer commanding would've been partially responsible to Rommel, but mainly to #GeneralFeldsmarschall "Smiling Albert" Kesselring, the senior German commander in Italy.

The Luftwaffe's ability to attack like this didn't really happen until 1943 in the Western theatre as the Defence of the Reich fighter squadrons formed when the 8th AF started their strategic campaign over Germany. Still it was really fun!

I played this mission a ton as a kid. It was by far my favorite in Big Red One, which is saying something because there are a ton of absolutely fantastic missions in this game. When I was a senior in High School, my grandfather called me one day to tell me how proud he was and how much I reminded him of his uncle. As it turns out, my Grandfather's Uncle was a Navigator on a B-24J Liberator with the 779th Bomber Squadron (Heavy), 464th Bomb Group flying out of Italy during World War II. On one of their first missions to bomb Augsberg, Germany, their plane went down over the Adriatic Sea, and none of them were ever heard or seen again. I like to think that it was through him that made me appreciate this mission more than any other in the game.

My parents didnt let me have video games when I was a kid (I know, the horror) So I had to buy everything for myself. I saved up my money doing oddjobs for ages to buy my own Ps2 and this was the first game I bought. And I played the ever loving shit out of it! This was my favorite level, I remember being blown away by the details of the wood-grain in the plywood lol. Thanks for the memories man.

9:14 I never thought much of this as a kid, but can you imagine that? The guys on your plane are essentially your brothers, and at this point, Stretch has just listened to one of them get killed. He now has to go man the tail gun, knowing what he's gonna find.

The Tail Gunner Position was arguably the absolute most dangerous position in a US Bomber at the time, the second being the Ball/Ventral Gunner since its center mass and mostly relying on their curved designs to ricochet bullets off. They were also the places the Aircraft was going to take a majority of their attacks from. Inside those compact spaces, the Gunner cannot fit a Parachute in with them, so if the ball turret or tail is severed or the whole plane is plummeting, both are usually the last to get out if at all. Being Juicy Targets, largely Unarmored and having remote Escape Equipment, dangerous is an understatement.

@@silvertalon007depended on how the attack was coming. FW.190s specialized in head on nose attacks due to their heavier firepower and attempts to take out bombers in one go by knocking out the pilots

What is interesting about this mission is that you can actually jump out of the plane if you are badly damaged but you still fail the mission.

I can barely remember when I was like 10 I was playing this mission (I didn't know English at that time so I just played blindly with no context) and I do remember that at some point the plane was damaged and an option appeared on the screen to jump off and I did. I have no way to confirm this because my PS2 is long gone and I don't have it on my PC to test it out but it's just a part of my memory now.

@Rocky Montana Garcia mayne if the plane actually dies then you go into a scene where the captain tells everyone to jump out but when they do the doors jammed then everyone screams and you blow up and die

My great grandfather who died at 93 was actually part of this regiment he paratrooped over Italy fought in north africa the whole shibang and he watched me play this game I remember him crying quietly but like tears of nostalgia and pride not sorrow and fear because he was proud of what his friends died for and what he sacrificed he was an extremely proud man never heartbroken because his brothers would never want people to feel sorrow over there deaths but rejoice in there triumphant sacrifice! I remember having a glitch while in the tail gun where it wouldn't go to the next part after I shot down the ace. I ended up shooting down well over 100 planes. Also, I never knew about that bit of dialogue if the ace shoots down one of your bombers. I guess I always shot him down at least by his second pass, so I never got to that point. RIP 'Five Day Express'.

And no two gameplays were the same. one time I was fending of probably over a thousand aircraft rushing at us for over 10 minutes. There was also another FW-190 that showed up and was giving me trouble for a bit. Was hella intense. On the downside there were a few times near the end that the game would crash.
