Battle of Oran - Call of Duty 2 Big Red One

So I've renamed this battle to something less specific than "Tafarquay Airfield" as I can't actually find anything about the 1st Infantry Division attacking an airfield and there is limited information on this. If anyone knows what this particular airfield is supposed to be or if it's an inaccurate event (such as the 1st infantry division never actually attacking an airfield in real life) it would be good to know.

main oddity for me is German aircraft, trucks and halftracks along with a German 20mm at a Vichy French airfield

Now that i think about it, Big Red One has the biggest variety of enemy factions, the only other game that i remember that we face the French soldiers was Medal of Honor Underground. The only ones missing here are the Japonese.

Fun fact: during this mission there is a mounted mg in the second hanger you enter where you can shoot at the stuka trying to leave and destroy it. Fun fact 2# during the runway crossing you can climb on the first half track though you have to be prone because standing or crouching will get you killed.

Yeah, this probably the only game that I know that I've played where you fight the Vichy French. At least in most games like Medal of Honor, this game, and Sniper Elite plus maybe other WW2 games, you also fight the Italian army. But I think this might've been the first game to feature them. That or Medal of Honor.

After France's surrender, the French State headed by Phillipe Petain was a sovereign nation, and not a puppet state. Even after the British attack on Mers-el-Kebir to sink French ships to deny them to the Axis and Operation Torch, the Vichy government refused to declare war on the Allies. Because of this, the Germans and Italian invaded the French State and only then was it affirmed that its place was as an Axis puppet state. The battle taking place in this mission is an armed conflict, but technically not a war. In fact, most of the Vichy troops probably have no God damn idea what's going on. No mission in North Africa afterwards contains Vichy troops. This is because the French military was disbanded soon after Operation Torch. The Axis didn't even allow any French to continue fighting. Their choices were to go home or join the Free French.

Fun Fact: The prime minister of the French State (Petain's second in command sort of), Laval, sent out a radio message during the D-Day landings demanding that the French populace NOT fight the Allies. Laval said doing so would cause the Allies to exact revenge on the French people (which they kinda did anyway). But it seems like the Vichy government was also having some troubles with Axis relations. Even under occupation, the Vichy were still refusing to do anything besides send workers to Germany. The only enemy the French State officially had was French resistance fighters, which they assembled their own militia to fight.

​@@walnzell9328Not really, most of Vichy officials actively collaborated with the germans by rounding up jews before the germans ordered them to do it. They also encouraged french soldiers to fight the soviets in eastern europe. But most of Vichy french military were hostile to the germans and also to the british, so they secretely prepared their revenge until the time came. And most of them also didn't want to rally General de Gaulle so they prefered to rally to General Giraud when he escaped prison.
