I feel that I've learnt more about writing in these 3 hours than I did over the last few months. Thanks so much for posting this.

True, I discovered Dresden Files through Rothfuss. He was always saying good stuff about it. So, I gave it a shot. I'm glad I did.

For the people who are having difficulty due to the left channel dominance of the soundtrack, try this: 1. Download the video using an app or an online downloader 2. Play the video using a player of your choice on your computer 3. In the settings menu of your media player, go to audio options where you can choose which sound stream to play. Among Both, Left, and Right, choose Left. That worked for me. Hope this helps.

Really happy about that Dark Tower shoutout. That's one of the best opening lines in any book I've read, ever. Of course, that first sentence of almost divine brevity and powerful imagery is immediately followed by many paragraphs of excessively flowery prose, but still. That first sentence made me fall in love with the Dark Tower. Good stuff.

We have run the video on several computers with very little sound issues. On laptops, tablets, or cell phones, the speakers are just not powerful enough to project the sound. However, we have had no problems on a desktops with adequate powered speakers. Please make sure your computers volume is set correctly, that the players volume is set correctly, and that your speakers are also set correctly. Sorry about the audio and thanks for watching.

Thanks for bring this to our attention. It seems fine on our computers, but from time to time, sound gets re-rendered (compressed) by KZbin for some reason. The end result is generally lower audio volume. Perhaps, trying it on another computer or a TV? Here's a few things to try. Make sure your computer volume is adjusted to max, then make sure the volume on the KZbin player is adjusted correctly. Also check your speaker volume as well. Sorry for your trouble, thanks again for watching.

Also, someone called cdragons on livejournal - who was apparently there - said that she was referring to a blog post Jim made where he used the phrase several times. So it wasn't even in one of the books! Wow!

"You can not have your main character wallow in self pity. That is an absolute no fly zone." Alrighty, Jim has never read Robin Hobb apparently XD

Which is why so many of us find Hobb unreadable.

No, she didn't say anything about Heinlein (Though that was the first thought that popped in my head, well, him and Asimov and Clarke...) I was sitting in front of her at SCC2013. Jim handled it with exceptional professionalism, I think.

Running a professional-grade Sennheiser setup with balanced audio levels. The sound is definitely skewed towards the left speaker. Seems to be an issue with just this video.

Panel room B, this room, didn't have very good audio or acoustics. The soundboard was not manned like 99% of the time and there was practically no audio support. We are already working on solving the audio issues in this room for Space City Con 2014 in January. Thanks for comments and we deeply apologize for the audio.

Yep. That's what I got. Which is nuts as that exact phrase was used as far back as the early 30's and referred to an older practice of a "free lunch" in bars in the 19th century to entice people to drink. Heinlein was just using a common adage. Milton Friedman also used it as the title of his famous book on economics in '75. I guess she would rant at Friedman for ripping off Heinlein too. That woman needs to grow up and realize the world is larger than her small circle. Or just use a Wiki!

Is there a transcribed version of this anywhere? I can't hear most of the questioners.
@AFKShowAustin10 жыл бұрын
Sorry there is no transcription. The main issue was that the people asking questions did not have a microphone and the facility didn't have a wireless to use. I'm sorry that you can't here the questions. You should be able to make out generally what was asked by Jim's answer.

I couldn't understand anything the creature was babbling about at 50~53-ish. Can someone tell me what that was all about? The thing that ended with "Truth has no copyright"

+Fnatic Avan She was accusing him of plagiarizing the idea that ,"there's no such thing as a free lunch," from Robert Heinlein. (As if no one ever thought of that before Heinlein wrote it.)

you need to fix the sound levels to this piece

I THINK she was upset because Jim had failed to acknowledge that his use of the phrase "There Ain't No Free Lunch" is similar to a theme used by Heinlein through all his fiction. But who knows.

Sorry, I realized listening to the video that we just had one channel of audio when it should have had two! Sometimes things slip through when we're rushing to get all the footage of a convention out in a hurry. Try using good quality headphones or a desktop with nicer powered speakers. Also, make sure your audio is turned up completely on your computer. Thanks for watching and leaving the comment!
@PhilBoswell11 жыл бұрын
The serious sound issues on this video make it very difficult to follow. Was it not possible to take a direct feed from Jim's mic? Was there no way to get a mic to the questioners? I understand that the intrusive laughter and applause coming from somewhere else indicate that the venue needs to address their own issues, but is it possible to take precautions against that happening again?
