Cats fan here- firstly congratulations to Melbourne, it was their night, outstanding from the first bounce. They played the way I feared they would! They’ve been the best team all year (as the ladder proved too) and would deserve the flag, I can’t see Port or the Bulldogs stopping them. As for us, well I didn’t think we could serve up a poorer performance than we did against Port but we somehow managed it- we looked completely spooked, slow and spent! The coaching team take a huge share of the blame of course but, for example, you can’t account for so many players being unable to compete and take pretty straightforward marks so many times. Of course Melbourne just didn’t let us play our game either. We were just well and truly run over by a superb, energetic, well drilled side playing at the top of their game- very tough to actually choose Dees best player as they were all on it for the whole game. Tough watch for us obviously and a lot of work to be done now. It’s the familiar frustrating feeling in recent times, specialists at making the 8 (which deserves credit) but too often we’ve been not so special when it has really mattered, putting in all the good work throughout the season to ultimately not turn up for finals. Just a side note- I heard some commentators praising the umpires which I couldn’t believe haha, I genuinely thought they were terrible most of the game with soft frees and the “high” tackle awards especially. Not an excuse at all by the way, all teams get calls for and against and we were deservedly beaten, just an observation some clearly disagreed with!

Probably need two or three years outside the eight to freshen up your list plus a couple of shoulder taps for some older players. Amazing effort to stay up so long and full credit to your recruiting staff.

@@npg68 I think the older players still have a big part to play (maybe not every game) but I agree we need some younger fresh legs and energy in there. We couldn’t contend with Melbourne’s energy (amongst everything else) that’s for sure. As disappointing as we’ve been in too many finals games some fans don’t appreciate how difficult it is to consistently be there or thereabouts every year. There will no doubt come a time when we continually don’t even make finals. It’s all cyclical I suppose!

Geelong simply don't have a gameplan that works in finals. Been brutally consistent since their last premiership in Home and Away season considering salary cap but have an abysmal finals record. Melbourne need to stay humble if they want to win the Grand Final too in my opinion.

Yeah, we can make the finals but just not quite finish the job, we need to learn from this loss and realize that what we've been doing in finals in previous years hasn't been working for us. On the other hand, good job Deez, they 100% deserved it. It's sad being able to predict Geelongs exact finals, with us usually dropping the first week, winning the semi's and losing the prelim, there's always next year, but who knows, if we even make finals, we'll probably do the same thing again unless we do something to try to address our problems in finals. It's not all bad, with Melbourne playing either the eager Bulldogs who have bested them before this year, or Port who are on a dangerous winning streak that is still ongoing. If Port win this week, they'll probably win the Grand final. Melbourne are a good team, but facing Port may give them a bit of a fright, Dogs too. We've seen it this year, where teams are able to run over Melbourne, like even Collingwood did it. Melbourne just need to approach the game with humility like you said, cos if they go in too cocky, they'll just get run over. Probably not as bad as Cats were run over, but still by a considerable amount.

Geelong need a coach who can actually develop players and has a plan B. Stealing every other teams best players (Danger, Twohy, Rohan, Cameron etc) and using the same game plan that Bomber Thompson had doesn't seem to be working. Goodluck to the Demons.
