To be precies. Australia is not the only team in the code. Australia is just the only country that can field a (fully) rofessional team.

Expats are not allowed to play in the footy world cup. That makes it impossible to have players around that grew up with the game, stymieing development. So you can’t go to New Zealand or Ireland and play for them after becoming a citizen. The AFL is just about the AFL itself - we don’t even have state footy any more. The youth do have that at least.
