KB, if you reading this, that 1980 GF still hurts, 42 years later!

What a true LEGEND. At me 63 years of age now, when I was a kid I'd go to MCG to watch him (and Royce) every week. The late '60s, early '70s Carlton V Richmond contests. The !980 win. At last now Richmond got it right, Go Tigers!

The game was at it's peak in the 1980's-1990's. It hadn't been sanitised, you still had flamboyant and flawed characters, money wasn't such an issue and players were there for the love of the game. We've lost something important with corporate control and full professionalisation.

This guy played the game to win the ball, he was small never hurt another player how did he not win a "brownlow" seriously how did a guy like Mathewsl get player of the century when this man played played the game???
@patrickbateman68854 жыл бұрын
Mate no offence KB a top 3 Richmond player ever but if you saw Matthews you would know why a rover who kicked 915 goals while averaging 24 disposals roughly and was the best player in the best team in the comp.

I've always thought the great players from the 70's and 80's get overlooked when pundits talk about who were the greatest players in the game. KB, Gary Dempsey, Greg Wells, Shane Hird etc. All brilliant players and yet they mostly don't even get a mention. I'm a Geelong supporter, but I'd have KB in the top 20 players ever.

Watched his whole career, team orientated, popular player, liked a goal hence the nickname, but gave plenty away also, not a selfish player at all, ridiculous question from the journalist

Re the rules ...... As a 10 yo in 1967 at primary school I knew th empires were cheating or ignoring the rules. At one time back then I called the game Russell Blues Rules..... when he was the coaches boss / advisor . A school teacher tried to tell me I was wrong. I convinced her to grab the rule book from the office. She was shocked when my rules were the actual rules in the rule book.... all of them. The best umpire I ever saw at VFL / AFL level was Glen James ( aboriginal umpire ). His 2nd last year was not good. His last year was worse..... and he retired, I thought very young. When interviewed a few years later he was asked what rules were in the rule book. He admitted he did not know. As an umpire they were all told NOT to read the rule book. The Joliemont Mafia would tell the advisor the rules and he would instruct the umpires as to the REQUIRED rules and any changes the cheats running the game required. Like NRL referees letting the Aussie half back feed the 2nd row but jump all over his opponent for even thinking about it. K B was a great player but he always either threw the ball when tackled or simply dropped it. He always got a free kick when the rules made it clear he was either caught in possession or simply had thrown the ball away. That was always the rules in the rule book..... there was no need to add a specific rule to he book and claim it as a new rule. Of course, once Collingwood finnished bottom of the ladder, Harry Beitzle’s career was over . They even had him convicted of trumped up charges to destroy him.

Wow! What a champion he is and what an exciting player he must have been to watch. Before my time unfortunately. I've also seen the FOXFOOTY's production 'Richmond: The lost years' (also viewable on youtube) so it was good to hear it from KB's perspective as well. All i can say is GR sounds like a horrible person and Richmond's demise is entirely his fault. It amazes me that nobody stood up to him and told him how terribly out-of-line he was in the way he ran the club. After so many of his decisions proved to be wrong, if anyone deserved to get sacked it was GR!!
@daztalkshorror7 жыл бұрын
Matty King I understand where you're coming from but he practically ran the club and poured the money in, people probably put themselves against him and got sacked, he was a dictator who did well in good times and left them in an absolute state!

I don't blame KB for having a grade against the club for sacking him because he had nothing to work with
@Al_Bundy_196610 жыл бұрын
Always loved KB & enjoyed this right up to the point where he blames the media & comentators for causing confusion about the rules. It's quite simple KB, the confusion is caused by the rules themselves & the inconsistencies of the umpires. But pymats probably summed it up best, the little bastard obviously wears blinkers.

Graeme Richmond comes over as a psychopath who probably thought he won those premierships single handedly.
@taxads77912 жыл бұрын
Should have been in the afl team of the century, only KB and Leigh Matthews have won the B&F in premiership years 3 times. Diesel Williams got picked instead of him, not sure about that, KB's record (apart from the brownlows, but that's an umpire award anyway) seems far superior to Williams, no disrespect to Williams.

Yeh agree Bartlett Barrett Royce Hart sensational players by their Coach said Kevin Sheedy was his alll time favourite player! Tghe best ever in the last 50 years GARY Ablett Ssniot nn Ian Stewart Daryl Baldock Wayne Carey n James Hird! Gob right back n uve got John Coleman n Billy Hutchinson! Dick Reynolds n even he said Hjtchhy was a better player than I sS n would've won 3 Brownlows had he not argued with the umpires so much! As it was he won 2! Greg Williams n Gavin Wanganeen have to get a nod also! Wiiamz like Hutchinson argued too much with the umpires n blotted his copy book! I mean he gets 50boossessions kicks 5 goals n never got a single vote! Wanganeen unbeleivable for his, size constantly going into packs n pulling down the mark against monsters! He went in where angels fear to tread! Lee Mathews also right in there! N Simon Maddens Ruck stats will never be, surpassed, from memory kicked 584 goals in a, stellar career n named the medal after him! Coleman could turn a game off his boot n he too had the medal named after him! N presently Dusty Martin out there on his own!

Slight correction. KB kicked 778 goals, not 478 goals (as is listed at 12:16). Surprised Mike Sheahan let this oversight get through. Otherwise an excellent interview, consistent with the rest of the series.
