​@@dylanlucas3397 Probably not, but that is a bad idea. Here in Hungary we have PhD, Masters, Bachelors degree level education options in law enforcement, and also longer trade schools. And they area also closely supervised by the prosecutors. A police officer has an immensely powerful tool with him: A radio, or even a cellphone. They can ask for advice from a lot of coworkers who had very different kind of training. But we tend to have some issues about "P" license plates. P is for "Próba" which is Test in Hungarian. They are there for testing cars when otherwise they cannot be used legally on the roads. They are available for mechanics and car dealers who might have to try cars (or allow customers to try cars) that either aren't registered, or didn't pass a required safety inspection, so cars that would be otherwise illegal to use on the roads. Some people misuse or abuse those license plates, and cops love to take them away from everyone as a result. Used car dealers hate this, as even for a minor infraction about these plates, when police take away one from a company, they have to take away all of them, and ban the company from having them for years. Huge loss for dealerships. Why we have this problem? Because even if you would require law degrees for all the cops, they would be still unable to come up with every possible legal defense you might have, and it might still lead to a wrong decision, even if they follow due process and all the good procedure. So, some dealers who often cooperate with some portals moaned and whined in the media. I have a few dealer friends. I am not a lawyer, but I still have them some friendly advice. Guess what, my advice worked so far. I said, that even if the law says clients of the dealership can use the car with P plates under certain conditions, it doesn't create an exception from the requirement of having a document on their person showing why they can use that car, why they can drive a car with the P plate belonging to dealership. And form of agreement is just as good documentation there as an employment contract. We have opened Word, and created some form to fill by the customer + an employee in a dealership. The form mentioned that the car the client wants to try isn't registered yet / doesn't have a normal license plate yet / doesn't have a valid mandatory safety inspection yet, so the driver recognizes all the risks of driving such cars. It also properly referenced the law that allowed clients to drive cars owned by the dealership with the P plate. It even had a QR code and a normal link so anyone who checked the document had the means to see why it is legal when they drive the car. It even stated that the customer had to verify a few things about the legal use of the "P" plate (that all other required documentation for using the P plate was properly made). Next time a cop stopped them when one of their client tried the car with an employee of the dealership on a passenger seat, the cop knew that his boss, the prosecution, etc. said that if the driver doesn't have any documents about using the "P" plate they have to confiscate the plate, and also knew about a few potential issues to look for was quickly stopped in his tracks. This driver has a document! That document is just as valid contract and legal document as employment contracts and other documents normally authorize the use of the P plate. Checked the link, managed to read the proper paragraph in the law, managed to verify it is really the law. The document looked legit to him and to his partner, and they were even able to radio their superiors about it. Both them and their supervisor have read the portal that complained about cops taking away P plates, and they thought that the requirement for documents on driver was either a mistake by law maker, or a poor excuse to take away P plates from dealers and increase some income, etc. But when they seen how the client had to acknowledge the risks from no safety inspection, had to check a detailed record about conditions of the vehicle, he had to verify all the documentation and the safety of the vehicle after starting it, the documents explained who is responsible for what if an accident happens, etc. they seen that this kind of document can be very important, and why the law would want some document on the driver. After all, if you employ lawyers to make some agreements for testing the cars with P plates, etc. you want to cover your asses, you want to make a good document that can help you even in the worst cases and that can be useful in many ways. And they have seen why their "poor excuse to take away the P plates" exists. The police aren't your lawyer, often they aren't your friend either. They don't have to be able to give you legal advice, understand plenty of things... They have to follow commands to enforce laws. But they need training about deescalating conflicts. They need training that makes their procedures safe. They need training to know how to investigate the validity of new information. They should be training in how to counteract their own tunnel vision in investigation and change their mind when needed. They need plenty of other skills that have NOTHING to do with a law degree. A law degree can give them confirmation bias, and they could assume that their interpretation of law is correct and backed up with a lot of experience. When they know they aren't law professors, they aren't lawyers, but they are good at following new information and changing their minds if new evidence demands that, and how their operation can be safe... THAT is important.

However, I fail to see the relevance of the P plate issue to whether police should receive legal training. The issue of P plates sounds like it's a result of poor legislation, not poor policing. I'm not claiming that if police had law degrees all policing problems would vanish; I'm only saying that because the police are tasked with enforcing the law, they should be knowledgeable about the law. This would better enable them to do their jobs and while it wouldn't solve every problem, it would solve or at least improve some.

​@@dylanlucas3397 I think it is good law.... But if you want to put all the factors considered, all the explanation into the law itself, it would become so detailed that no one would understand it. Requiring legal training from all police officers would mean: A.) Good police officers who know what rules they enforce, but don't know much more about other parts of the law would be locked out of the profession. So their talents and kills about interrogation, interpreting forensic evidence, deescalating tactics, psychology, etc. would be lost to the Police. B.) You still need a lot of law enforcement officers. People with law degrees who would be any good as lawyers, who passed the bar exams, etc would demand competitive wages. As the police force can't pay that much, they would either have to hire disbarred, dishonest ex-lawyers, or there would be a huge lack of police officers and lawlessness. C.) Even if it would help in some rare cases, it would create confirmation bias in other cases, and would lead to WORSE policing in other (more) cases. The point with "P" plates is simple: Even several lawyers who specialize in one kind of clients can be wrong about how they interpret the law and how they can interpret very complex facts of the case. Sometimes even people with law degrees, who specialize in one kind of clients can fail at noticing some solution, because lawyers who were good at interpreting facts, who were good at finding good solution work for different clients, on different kind of cases, making far more money. Hiring bad paralegals as police officers would be bad. The Police officer in this video had facts far worse than his lack of legal training. I would compare him to a food delivery guy I have encountered. He haven't spoke the local language, and had a few problems. Probably a foreign student. I wouldn't want him to learn Hungarian as it is difficult. But I would want him to be bright enough to use a translator app on his phone to be able to understand some instructions, and be ready to call his dispatcher for help if that isn't enough. The cop in this video had YEARS to Google up important statutes, he had his smartphone, he had his radio, he had years and probably decades to ask the DA, or a judge, or even some "legal advice" page, youtuber about the laws he has to use every day. He was just too reckless to do it, and just accepted all kind of illegal outcomes of his attitude, so he didn't care to ask. When a cop has the time to think about the law, consider how some rarely used law might have been updates, has time to analyze, he also has the time to talk on the radio, call for help from people with more legal knowledge... He also has time to google it up. This cop probably didn't know how to use his existing tools (phone, Google, Radio, etc) to do his job. Why do you think that he would be any better at using his far out of date limited knowledge of law, when he already forgot most of the stuff as he focused on other things?

I didn't actually get pulled over, but a friend of mine used to live in a small Nebraska town. I drove out to see him and did fine with the highways, but at the very edge of his town I picked up a police tail that followed me all the way to my friend's house. He even sat there at the end of the driveway until my friend came out and waved at him. A myth that out of state plates are targeted? Never going to sell me that it's a myth.

Yep. I think they hand out more tickets to out-of-staters because they're pretty sure you're not going to drive 500 miles just to go to traffic court, you'll probably just pay it. If I'm pulled over out of state, I'll make a point of slipping into the conversation, "I come through here all the time."

I think it’s more that you won’t be able to call your city councilman or representative and complain that officers are wasting peoples time with tickets for going 3mph over. Legislators from both parties would love to be able to show they are stopping cops from investigating nuisances. Conservatives consider it government overreach and liberals use it as an example of police departments wasting money not keeping people safe. If a police chief gets a complaint from a legislator about you, you are definitely going under the bus.

@@NickSteffen That's where you're wrong, there are tons of local governments that are very big on ticket revenue. There's a reason why they call it "revenue" and not a "fee". It gets briefed on high and the cops get their ass chewed for not handing out enough tickets.

@@Skank_and_Gutterboy Virginia, where Andrew Flusche practices, has a clever money racket regarding reckless driving. The law is 20 over posted speed limit, or 80. Interstates outside of cities are 70, so you cruise along around 10 over like everyone does, and BAM! Reckless driving. Reckless driving is different class than normal ticket, with mandatory court appearance. Within a week you will receive at least 3 solicitation letters from lawyers in the county you were stopped. And I'm pretty certain they are especially vigilant for out of state. Ask me how I know.

It is absolutely true. I recall 2 such incidents in my lifetime. #1 - in 1979, I'm 19 years old, attending, what was at that time called Tri State University, in Angola Indiana. I lived in Indiana many years but had just moved to Illinois, but I was attending school in this Northeastern Indiana school. I was traveling under the speed limit, near the campus, yet pulled over for speeding. I was let go with a verbal warning. I asked why I was actually pulled over and the officer directly stated, "well I noticed you had out of state plates". When I questioned him further, he state, "if you weren't a student and didn't live in town, you'd have gotten a ticket because we know you wouldn't come back to fight it". #2 - I drove from Illinois to Ohio for my son's competition. We stayed at a motel and drove to the train station to get to downtown Cleveland. One day, while at a stop sign, then slowly accelerating to 10 mph, the car in front of me was barely traveling approximately 15 mph. The police officer pulled me over for going 43 in a 30 mph area. I stated to the officer it was clearly impossible for me to be going that fast because I would have hit the car still visible during the stop. His first comment was, "well I noticed your from out of state. Why are you in our town"? Then he told me he knew because I was from Illinois is never make the court date. Not to worry, being out of state it didn't give me points and I could pay online. He stated he mainly stops out of towner people and he does this often. The ticket for 13mph over ended up being over $250 in 2016 and it did carry points. The main takeaways here is, cops lie and cops do target people with out of state license plates!

About speeding and out of country: If you would visit my hometown, the beautiful city of Budapest, Hungary, you would at first see what many tourism videos praise about our city, but if you would use a rental car, you would see how speeding is handled differently here. We have plenty of automated speed cameras, and their accuracy is accredited. If you can't prove an issue with their measurements, the owner of the car has to pay for the speeding fines unless the driver is identified. But even if he paid the fines, he would be able to recover that in a lawsuit. There are plenty of traffic infractions where the fines are automatic and are paid this way, based on simple video evidence. Similar systems work in most parts of Europe, and car rental firms will make sure people who rented the car will pay the fines. So I know that a friend of mine was found speeding in France. It was mild speeding, it would be no fine here in Hungary, but in France it was a fine. They just mailed the company he rented the van from, and told either him or the person who rented the vehicle or the driver should pay like 30 EUR if paid quickly, and 60 if they are slow to pay, etc. So the tickets American people getting from speeding in Europe might come AFTER you return to Europe, with proof and automatic fines attached. And usually you would have to pay the fines.

I had a situation occur in Texas, I was an airline pilot based in Texas I lived in Va Beach, VA I also had an apartment in Texas when I flew out my Texas base. I had a car in Texas registered to the apartment address in Texas but maintained a Virginia Drivers License as it was home of record in Va Beach. One night returning to the apartment police were conducting licenses checks. I was issued a citation for not having a Texas drivers license. I explained the car remained in Texas all the time. I lived in VA. I went to court and the judge dismissed the case. And gave the police officer a stern talking to. You can not be in possession of two drivers License’s and this is what the police officer was trying to force me to do. 🤣🛫

Technically speaking, there is no Federal or all-encompassing law that says you can't have two licenses (for example, until 2018 florida allowed you to have a second license for Florida only, though they will not be renewing them anymore) it is on the onus of each state to pass laws governing this, and as of 2019, all states have. If your particular instance was previous to 2019, it would have been possible if one of the states was Florida. If it was 2010 or earlier, Texas would have been included as well as a smattering of other states. Before 2000, almost half the states would have had no such law.

I remember that I was in the states from Canada and we were staying at a rental property. We were snagged at one of those small town grocery store to highway junctions where if you speed up before the sign, they'll nail you. The police officer came up and I immediately apologized and said we were staying at the property and were shopping for our party of 22. He let us off with a warning and I definitely think it was a "don't hassle the people pumping money into the town" sort of thing.

I got pulled over in a rental car with CA plates in Van Horn TX, for 5 over. The cop had me follow him to the police station, or post office or something (I can't remember now, this was about 30 years ago). After I paid the fine I informed the cop that I wasn't that upset about the fine, because looking around Van Horn TX it looked like they needed the money a lot more than I did. Then I went to the gas station in town and told the owner that I was planning on filling up my Pontiac Grand Prix (and I was) at his station and buying lunch somewhere in town, but because of this cop's speedtrap (I made sure to tell him the name of the cop) my attitude now was F**K Van Horn. I suggested he let the town council know about what this cop was doing to people driving through their poor, pathetic little town.

A cop, on the other hand, will bark orders, flex his nuts, hide behind his badge, overcharge people, and violate their rights. I’ve only dealt with one that was rude, and it was because he didn’t believe that we weren’t involved in the altercation that we called him for. I like to travel from state to state, & have been pulled over while driving a Clean Silver Mercedes Benz Sport model with California plates, in area's where you would mostly see Ford F250's type vehicles. The pull over usually starts with the officer stating that he pulled me over because "I look suspicious", and one tail light looked brighter than the other, I was going one mile over the speed limit, I looked lost... I have never received a ticket, but in most cases I am given a written warning that was documented into their system. The time when I was told I was going one mile over the speed limit, the written warning read that I was going seven miles over the speed limit, & as the officer (Arkansas State Police), handed me the written warning said, "you may not want to speed, because you will get a ticket". Now I am blackballed, I haven't had a ticket in over 18 years. It's not fun being pulled over, questioned, bullied, interrogated, but I always show all my Organized Documents, & keep my composure. I realize that offercers put their lives in harm's way, but should also maybe change some of their tactics to not escalate a problem. In my profession I deal with people every day, with very personal, emotional issues, that by using certain attitudes, words, or behaviors, things can go sideways for everyone at a moment.

That statement about a police officer not stopping people who are out of state is both true and false. It's mostly because of how the cop is feeling. Also the next problem is that the cops asking about where he is from or going and any number of other things are none of the cops business.

What state of Oregon are you driving in? Portland has the worst freeways west of New Jersey. The roads are poorly banked and in disrepair. They have the slowest speed limit in the country. They will impound your car if you don't have proof of insurance. Washington has the best roads on the west coast. Even better than California, as those roads are falling apart like mad.

I keep all of my car documents in a similar bright red plastic envelope. No fumbling. Before retirement I often drove company cars. We did not have traditional insurance, but were self insured. We had a paper from the state stating such and had all details needed to insure we were, in fact self insured. I think we even had a bond with the state to cover this.

It's certainly not the case everywhere, but there are certainly parts of the country where they pull over out of staters for the flimsiest of reasons, like 5 mph under the limit, 1 mph over the limit, while you didn't touch the line you weren't perfectly in the middle of the lane, or simply that you seemed suspicious.

I was pulled over while travelling west on I-40 through OK between Tulsa and OKC at a "turnpike" (aka toll booth) with OR plates. I was told the make and model of my vehicle was often used for drug trafficking, after I ignorantly consented to a search of my car (which I only did because I didn't want their canine scratching up my car). Long story short, their dog scratched my car up on all sides, nothing illegal was discovered, and I got a painful education in learning my rights since that day.

My Oklahoma story is very similar to yours, that is also when I started looking much more into my rights... because they were stepping all over them. They even commanded the dog to bark, to say they got a “hit” on my vehicle, for me to consent to the search of my vehicle. Wish I had it on camera, I was appalled. I find cops have become as sleazy as car salesman in their tactics.

Many Americans don't seem to know that Canada exists or that Canadian and American licenses are valid in both countries. When they see a Canadian license, their only reaction is "that is not a state". I heard about (American) cops telling people from New Mexico and West Virginia that their states don't exist either.

In British Columbia, where I believe the driver is from, the registration is your certificate of insurance. It says right across the top of the paper, Certificate of Insurance and Vehicle Licence. The bottom of that same page is the Vehicle Registration, plainly labeled.

@@JKiler1 In my experience, cops never really give a reason for a stop. I don't know why people cite the constitution so much because its not like it matters, they just do what they want. its not like it prevents them or the courts from receiving money.

@@JKiler1 Not saying any of this is right. If a cop decides they want to stop you for some reason, most of the time they can just follow you at a distance and they will find something... Following too close, crossed a solid line for a split second or just weaving within a lane, forgot to use turn signal, window tint, object hanging from mirror (depending on state), phone in your hand, etc... And in all that time I've never received one ticket! I'm cognizant of obeying all traffic laws. I've been pretty much housebound for most of the last 2 years since COVID. But much has changed in this country in recent years. Incredible polarization and downright hatred of Californians in other parts of the country. So it will be interesting to see if I will be pulled over during my road trip and what the attitude will be from LEO's. sometimes you can clear up infractions by getting your paperwork together and going down to the local courthouse and figuring it out. depending on the municipality sometimes there are forms to fill out sometimes you can get things signed off sometimes you can sit in court until the docket clears and politely explain the misunderstanding to the judge serving at the time. the clerks are really the worst to deal with in my experience, the judges are usually very understanding.

When you purchase a car and get it licensed you know what that paper looks like and when you get insurance you receive paperwork or it is text to your phone. I watched his video a few months back he was kinda being a jerk to the cop and the cop acted as one as well. The police officer told him if he seen him driving the car later that day he would arrest him and the cop was wrong.. Until the treaty with Canada is revoked they are allowed to drive anywhere in America as long as they have a up to date license in their country. And we are allowed to drive in their country as well.

Cops have an obligation to be immune to assholes, though. By standard, they're expected to have thicker skins and not rise to the (understandable) aggravation that some people have. Otherwise, you start criminalizing behavior that a cop's ego can't handle.

While telephone workers have the benefits of separate locations, workers face-to-face with customers face the same potential problems (attitudes, violence). Yet employees outside law enforcement are expected to do their jobs correctly and pleasantly, not rise to bait or provocation, not "get emotional", all without a weapon at hand. If so many people can deal with nasty violent members of the public on a daily basis, with a smile, often for minimum wage, cops can put their fragile egos in a hard shell (or find a job where they don't have to work with the public).

There is an outdated 1948 treaty for IDP's (which was not ratified in later editions and technically has fallen out of use) but no Canada-US treaty for drivers licenses. That is handled (as pointed out about halfway through) through State Exceptions in the United States.

I got an International Driver’s License from my local AMA a few years ago (for free.) It’s simply a little book (with very bold lettering on the front) that lists all the countries/states/provinces that have reciprocal agreements for non-resident drivers. I’ve given it to cops in many different jurisdictions and it blows their minds! I’ve actually gotten out of tickets by including it with my regular documents. It’s a lifesaver in these situations!

@@Nobody1975JM No, I have both to this day-almost twenty years. I have actually used both. When I’m driving in my own jurisdiction I, obviously, use/provide the government issued driver’s license. When I drive outside of my jurisdiction I provide both my license and the international permit. Neither has ever been questioned. Over the years I’ve been nicked for speeding in foreign jurisdictions (several times.) I’ve never been cited anywhere-except for the U.S. (they take the revenue gathering aspect of speeding VERY seriously in some states!) In cases outside the U.S. the police actually seem to appreciate the multilingual nature of the permit and the fact that I went to the trouble of obtaining it. It’s something I never travel without.

I can tell you my experience of this situation... I got a ticket out of state and was able to hire a local attorney to handle the court appearance... It was far less expensive than dealing with everything you list in personal loss... I imagine this may not be possible for some violations and/or in some states... By the way I was on active duty at the time with PCS orders moving myself and my family more than 1000 miles to \my new duty station and did not want to have to ask for the time off so soon after checking into my new command to handle a ticket in another state...

@@TheRealSlowhand ​ Reminds me of a similar experience when I was younger. While in the Navy I was transferred from Norfolk to San Diego and driving across country. I was stopped for speeding in Oklahoma (clocked by radar). I politely asked the officer if I could view the target speed on his radar unit (which at the time they had to keep active on the display). He invited me to his car to look at the radar equipment display and asked what I do in the Navy (my driver's license said USS Germantown for the address). I told him I was an electronics technician to which he replied, "So you probably know all about this radar stuff". I replied solemnly, "Yes, sir. And, I know it's very accurate." (BTW, certainly the sort of talking that Andrew would NOT ADVISE.) Well in my case, he laughed so hard at that comment he decided to give this kid a warning. Phew! I assume being super respectful of his authority and being on active duty may have also helped.

brandon good question. and this had happened to me..a few years back i had a Colorado license with a car registered there as well,, with legal factory tint, not dark at all and i was traveling thru the state of Utah . driving home from a visit to family in california.. stopping in Wendover nv. to grab a bite and refuel.. i stopped and put some money in a slot machine and hit a small jackpot. a few thousand. so i asked for the cash instead of a check and continued on my travel home. mistake 1.. as i travelled along i-80 the uhp had some type of interdiction program that day. there was about 8 cars in the divide of interstate. as i passed 2 cars proceeded to followed not speeding i did not think much of it, but they stayed behind and pulled me over. the officer stated that my window tint was illegal.? he asked for my info and to come to his car while he did his thing. mistake 2 .i should have stayed in my car as i walked up i saw that his car had limo tint ,as my car had just 55 percent and called him on it and asked if that was a secondary offense? he said it was not.?? in the report and used it was a excuse to see if i was trafficking. cuz it went from the tint to pretextual stop, asking you got any guns, bombs anything illegal?? saying i was coming from a state that has legal cannabis to a state that has the same. and he was out looking for major busts and not just lil amounts . and asked can we look.in my car. i said no , if its legal where im going, why do i need to travel with anything? thinking that should be a logical response, mistake 3.. kept up with the questions. and the asking.. A second car had a k9 and they did the walk around and dog hits. so i admit to have smoked earlier that day. like 12 hr ago like at 7am .i had a medical card valid in my state.... mistake 4. that was enough to arrest me for dwi. then gave them the legal right. to search the hell out of my car and they tossed that shit . and then tow it. they found nothing in my car .they found only 3 grams of bud on my person along with all that cash i won. which they tried to keep. i had video of me winning .. spending 7k for a local attorney. bail and tow cost...plus my freedom sucked.\ tho they had dropped the dwi cuz they put on report i said i smoked at 7, so they put 7 pm claiming i smoked a half hour before being pulled over there mistake but a honest the DA says, right ? bs, but dumb ass me talked, thinking they just wanted major runners. they want everybody. period.. they could just get me on the small amount that i had,, a misdemeanor that got dropped after a year out of trouble . but now since im bit more educated if this type of police encounter happens to me again? just start to film with phone and say i dont answer question,,, if you have anything or not. nothing you say helps you...

Thanks for the info, but what about equipment tickes? In ocean city MD where the tuner market has heavy car meets I've heard stories of police towing cars away for equipment violations. Like too low, loud exhaust, tints or whatever they can find. California has ridiculous equipment fines. Lets say I get pulled over for tint in a state like New York but I live in Jersey which also has tint laws, could I fligh that ticket? Easy question. If you come in my house, you obey my rules. Some states don't have inspection stickers, cops are trained to do roadside MV inspections (tires, body condition, etc). If you have a loud exhaust, the plate would not matter. Another question is if an inspection sticker is expired from another state, could they write a ticket for that.

Like how a governor's rules of his/her private home are not imposed on people in a public building such as the capitol building. Not sure is that example exactly tracks. But states certainly make their own rules. A car can theoretically pass NY inspection with no sheetmetal on the doors, but in PA it would be an instant fail. What type of insurance is required in the USA? In Australia, the only insurance required by law is included in the vehicle registration but only covers injuries (and is a no-fault scheme). Police in Australia generally only ask for a driver licence.

If you are driving in the US it is useful to have a document proving that you have car and driving insurance. In the US police, at most, will look for who is insured, what company is the insurance company, does the policy meet state minimums, and to see if the policy is still in effect and not expired.

I know at least in some States, showing a cop your insurance information is pointless anyway because when they run your plate it will access that States record of whether or not the vehicle is insured. Insurance companies are required to update the State as often as every two weeks of the insurance status so if that check fails no papers you show the cop is going to make a difference. They just do it find another reason to ticket you or harass you if you're a minority.

@Nehemiah Scudder If you don't believe in their ethics, then yes, don't go there and spend money. Also, why go straight to stereotypical Kentucky? There are plenty of level headed states. No need to jump to extremes to counter my point that California is a nightmare of a state where EVERYTHING is illegal or regulated. If you like being told what you can or can't do with every aspect of your life, then by all means, go to California.

@Nehemiah Scudder maybe you need to re-read what I said? I said Kentucky is an extreme and bad example...... You are impossible to reason with. One extreme to another. Bringing up a single city with an isolated incident to put a blanket over an entire subset of level headed states with low regulation.

I used to live in Arizona. Now I live in California. I've driven back and forth in vehicles with California plates on my car and one Arizona plate on my car depending on where I was living at the time. I've never been stopped by any California LEO when I had my one Arizona plate. And I have friends and family often visit from Arizona. I've never heard of anyone being stopped in California for only having the one Arizona plate.

What about not really needing a license to travel freely if you're not conducting commerce ie:Uber, Lyft, taxi, ect

Here in my province in Canada the vehicle registration and insurance IS the same document issued by the provincial government insurance company. Our registration is proof of insurance. We have to buy the insurance when we register our vehicle; it's part of the fees. We don't have separate insurance papers unless we take out extra insurance from a second insurance company. Although we can also buy extra insurance with the provincial registration, but I don't believe they issue a separate document they simply add it to our current policy. Are we required to have secondary insurance to drive as a tourist in the United States?

@@DeputyNordburg thank you - so if I go to drive the USA I should check that. But - would I have a paperwork problem seeing that registration and insurance is the same document? And if so would a ticket be the only penalty?

@@bellaspatiogarden3493 Does the document say it is registration and insurance? If it says that in English, I can't see why it would be a problem. I would make sure you can point to the parts of the document that explain that. And that it says your insurance is valid in the United States. My car insurance does not cover me outside the USA, and it says this on my insurance card.

Handing over an envelope that's marked with an attorney's business is a great idea. It shows the cop that you're not just some rube they can bully because you can, and more importantly will go to that attorney. If there's one thing the police hate it's citizens having access to legal defense.

I wonder if Officer Torres was confused: is not the two-letter country code for Canada, "CA"? Which is the same as the state postal code for California. That would explain why he claimed to have checked, and said that no license was issued in California to that name.

i believe there is a federal law that allows for an interstate compact that allows for reciprocating recognition of out of state drivers license and tags and that any traffic ticket issued out of state follows you back home and goes on your home driver's license eventually, but the interstate compact thing allows I belive for non residents to use their driver's licences in another state as long as the drivers licence is valid along with tags and insurance you still have to follow that states rules of the road but in most cases they are same don't run a red light or stop sign, for the speed limit, proper lane change, no DUI.

I have been pulled over and ticketed multiple times over the years while visiting other states. It is absolutely because I was not from there and they thought I would just pay the fine and they wouldn't have to worry about me contesting it. What they didn't know is that while I would not return to contest the ticket I also would not pay them because there isn't a damn thing they can do about it. Of these instances a couple stick out as the most absurd. 1) I was driving down a highway at night doing 65 mph, i think, its been years ago, whatever the speed limit was. I couldn't see taillights or headlights in either direction for over a mile when suddenly break lights come on directly in front of me in the middle of the road. Again there had been no visible lights before the break lights came on. I rapidly decelerated and pulled off to the sounder to avoid this car that had apparently appeared out of nowhere. Turns out it was a cop in a black car who was literally parked in the road (65 mph road) just over a small hill with his lights off. He immediately came and pulled me over. He started out with the standard question. "do you know why I pulled you over". I said "I have a pretty good idea yea". He says "why do you think that is". I said "Some idiot was parked in the middle of the road back there with his lights off and I almost hit him". Needless to say his tone changed rapidly. He said "no I pulled you over because you were doing 80 in a 65". I said "well we both know that isn't true but go ahead and right the ticket we can talk to the judge about it." He wrote me the ticket and the next day I called the judge. In short I said, this is total bs. I would be shocked if you have not had similar reports about this officer. He was parked in the road with his lights off and I barely avoided hitting him. He created a life threatening situation then ticketed me claiming I was speeding. I drive a very old truck and it literally couldn't go as fast as he claimed if I pushed it off a cliff. I was pushing it pretty hard just to get it up to the speed limit. Now if you really want me to fight this ticket in court I will be happy to but I will be hiring an attorney who will be suing this officer and anyone aware of his tactics for reckless endangerment and anything else he might think applies. The judge said "well if you don't want to come to court you can just mail in the fine". I said "no, I wont be paying a fine. I will never pay a fine. I'd rather sit in jail than support a corrupt system, so just sign me up for a court date and I'll start calling attorneys. He pretended to be looking something up then came back "well it looks like you have a pretty clean driving record up to this point, I think we will just drop the matter.". I said "You feel free to justify it however you like but you need to have a talk with your boy before he kills someone". Then I hung up. 2) A cop in Oklahoma was traveling the opposite direction from me. It was 10 pm, so very dark, out between cities, so no other traffic anywhere near me and very little light. This is a two lane road going each direction separated by a 30 ft ditch. The cop sees me, flips a uturn and comes and pulls me over. "You know why I pulled you over". me- "no idea". cop - "your license plate is expired". me - "So you are trying to tell me that you were traveling the opposite direction at a separating speed of over 130 mph and you saw a sticker on my plate that is 1 inch tall and 2 inches wide, in your rear view mirror?" cop - "yes". me - "Well it doesn't matter anyway, thats not a valid plate. I just bought the car from a friend in Arizona who lives in California. I am a Texas resident and I haven't even been back in Texas yet since buying the car to update the registration. I have insurance (gave him that paper), here is my Texas license (handed him that), here is the bill of sale for the vehicle and the title "handed him them" He took a look at everything and said "well this all looks valid but you still can't be driving around an unregistered vehicle". I said "Absolutely I can. I could rent a vehicle. It would not be registered to me. I could borrow a vehicle, also not registered to me. In this case I purchased a vehicle which is registered to the previous owner also a friend of mine. I suppose you could consider that borrowing but again, I bought the vehicle". He says "yea but thats the problem, you own the vehicle and yet it is not registered to you". I said "No it is NOT a problem. According to Texas state law I have 30 days after purchase of the vehicle to get it registered in my name. There is no law that even suggest that I can not operate the vehicle during that time. Only that I must have insurance on the vehicle which I have already shown you.". Now he comes back yet again "Yea well thats not the law in Oklahoma." "That's very interesting but it doesn't affect me" I say "Whatever your laws are regarding purchase and registration of vehicles has no impact on a Texas resident. You don't even have jurisdiction to ticket me for the matter as it is not in violation of Texas state law and I am not a Oklahoma resident." cop - "I may still need to write you a ticket for failure to show registration". me - "you can if you want, but I did show you registration, it just isn't registered to me and as we already discussed there is no law prohibiting a person operating a vehicle that is not registered to them. Somehow I highly doubt that your cruiser is registered to you, and yet you drove it here." He went back to his car, made me wait for like 20 mins, finally came back, gave me my papers, and let me go. The whole situation was just so ridiculous, he was trying to hard to generate a reason for the stop to validate his actions after I called him out for the impossibility of seeing that tiny sticker from over 50 feet away, at night, in is rear view mirror.

Andrew, you are peepee-ing down my back and screaming rain here! @1:48 because HE HAS ALL HE NEEDS, and it IS IN ORDER! Canada has reg AND insurance on the same document. What do you want him to do? Register it here just to have two separate pieces of paper??? You are usually spot on, why and I pausing twice before the 2min mark????
