Dhlakama story is same to that of his rebel counterpart Jonas Savimbi in Angola. They sold their souls to Apartheid regime in SA and this diluted their justification for being rebel leaders. All I can say is that most of the civil war in Africa is caused by colonial government, they couldn't accept defeat so they came up of ways to make Africa incapable of leading itself, they loved every moment of it, the brutal killings and hunger. This Aid help from nonprofit organization would come to Africa "To Aid to those in need" was just a way to put us on TV an show the world how bad the situation is they didn't really care, they still lived comfortably in their homes with their family safe and sound earning a good salary. Imagine where would Africa be if it wasn't of civil war and evil greedy leaders, I mean we have it all, the resources, the beautiful cultures.

@@lucasuugwanga826 it's not that straightforward either. Colonists degraded and exploited the indigenous people along with the development they brought. But afterwards post colonial history shows that black leaders have not done us any favors either inspite of what they promised. The two countries that were not colonized are not doing any better now than those that were colonised. Africa needs to take a long hard look at itself and it's why we end up with bad leaders.

From what I've been able to find here in the US, Dhlakama was hardly an intellectual, and so I can imagine why he might think something is fishy when he lost his second straight election. Chissano was a great reformer, even if under duress, but he should have made a better effort at devolving power to the provinces--especially since Portugal cobbled together such a diverse and un-unified stretch of territory within its borders. Dhlakama the warrior was one of the worst war criminals of the 20th century, but millions of Mozambicans were willing to try out being ruled by Dhlakama the politician, and they should have been given that chance in Zambezia, Sofala, Manica, and the other provinces where he could command a majority. Now that Dhlakama is dead, I hope the new generation of anti-Frelimo leaders look to politics and not violence, and that Frelimo use them to better sharpen their own policies.

FRELIMO is really no different from any other liberation party in Africa. It's run out of ideas, cannot do the basic management anymore and is actively running the country into an abyss of corruption, mismanagement, poverty and hopelessness. They need to be removed from power and kept away from it so that Mozambique can actually recover.

Dear Uploader and whomever may be reading this, Chaos already occurred in Mozambique most notably with the mismanagement of the economy and secondly, Mozambique's military apparatus being unwilling to halt ZANLA's terrorist operations against Rhodesia, and in turn, Mozambique's incompetence in trying to halt Rhodesia's retaliation to cease the terrorist operations by ZANLA, which is what led to Andre Matsangaissa, a former FRELIMO political commissar, to be jailed and then freed by the Rhodesian SAS and in so doing, forming his own political party in order to counteract the failed marxist policies in Mozambique. Also, Afonso Dhlakama was second-in-command to Andre, and only assumed power once Andre passed away.

Samora Machel's regime , which in reality was not socialist, but communist inspired by Marx, lenine and Brejnev's USSR, was not satisfactory for all its population . Afonso Dlhakama was a brillant fighter and strategist . And he was alsoa sincere patriot, because he made twice peace agreements with Mozambique socialist party for peace and reconciliation ,but his requests was never satisfied by the ruling party, who always undertook tricky and treacherous manoeuvres against him

Nice presentation. Civil wars are never good. However you left out another and I think a crucial reason. You mention Rhodesia and Apartheid governments as the originators of the movement. I bring this to your attention: Frelimo was formed from three different movements (research). After independence only members of one movement that formed Frelimo rose to prominence. Frelimo as a communist party started killing anyone who had different opinions even its own very vice president and his wife (Uria Simango), intellectuals, religious and traditional leaders. Frelimo had even camps similar to the Nazi concentration camps for anyone who had opposing views for a crime back then known as "enemies of the revolution). So, Rhodesia and Apartheid regimes explored this loophole. And another thing, not the least, you also left out the ethnic element present in it. And then connect that regional element to the three movements prior to forming Frelimo.

Yes, tribalism played a huge role in there being FRELIMO dissidents in the first place. I always equate it to the tribalism that was apparent in Zimbabwe's revolutionary parties that culminated in the Gukurahundi massacres. Comrades who fought together to liberate a nation, then post independence, a certain faction started sharing power amongst themselves along tribal lines.

Afonso Dhlakama was in my opinion an unrecognized freedom fighter for democracy in Mozambique, agaisnt the communist regime in power of Pdt Samora Machel. though he instigated a brutal war, the opponent army of Samora machel was also very brutal in massacring innocent civilians, because war is not a "game" between gentlemen . It is a pity that Afonso Dhlakama never won the presidential elections, because had this happen, Mozambique population would maybe enjoy a democratic regime and would have never suffered of the communist grip of USSR and its allies . We can refer to Ethiopia under Mengistu's bloody rule as for the destruction of the country by African "red" dictators
