Hi Leslie , I'm sorry for the treatment you get from my fellow Indonesians because of your skin colour. I know exactly what you mean. Most Asian , not only Indonesian find lighter colour skin to be more attractive . I'm living in Thailand at the moment and I find it difficult to find any skin scare that doesn't promote skin whitening agent in it . I'm brown skinned Indonesian and I'm very proud of my skin tone . I've no wish to have lighter colour skin and I feel beautiful as I am. To me you're a very attractive looking young lady with a very positive attitude to match . Lovely video . Terima kasih .

This has to do with the old belief that lighter skin means , higher class. This is going back to the days where the poor has to work in the field under the sun , hence the darker complexion. Mine was olive but turned light brown since we moved to Phuket. You're right .It's the same here in Thailand . It is so hard to find beauty product which doesn't contain whitening agent. Even when I go for my facial , the treatment will include whitening . That's why before I do it I make sure it's not included in the package. It's crazy.

You're not the only one, I've experienced a lot of those things base on your experience about Phisical appearance. Btw here's the whole story about me, My name is Gilbert Banks, my dad is American, born in New York and my mom is Indonesian, part of Indonesia that my mom came from is west papua. So basically I'm not african american but I'm officially Indonesian-American, i live in Indonesia mostly Cosplaying and other Fun stuff i do here. I also do vloging here just to show some awesome places even though i only have a few subscribers. I was also born in New York in the United States just like my dad and aged 15, I moved to Indonesia to start a new life with my family. I’ve been here in Indonesia for quite a long time in at least 4 years. Apart from growing out of an urban city, I really feel fast adapting to the familiar environment around Jakarta. The structure and buildings were very familiar to New York when I stepped into the town for the first time in 2015. I used to go around historical sites to get to know more about Jakarta, like Monas. Not only that, I also remember that I went to study tours in exile like traveling to Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Borobudur Temple when i started junior high school here in Indonesia. I feel life in Indonesia is more adventurous and beautiful than exploring all 50 states in America. Let’s just say I will still love to date a beautiful Indonesian girl someday. And for my ambition? My dream is to become a Public Figure & Musician (Artist) hopefully my dreams will come true. So about the skin color problem, don't worry because I've been through a lot of that nonsense, but it's ok, not all Indonesian here are like that. I have a lot of Indonesians friends, and not all of them like to judge me negatively about my skin color. Peace and Love Sister! ✌️❤️

I am a brown skinned Indonesian and despise the skin whitening propaganda. People here would think that I come from a low class and blatantly ask if I work as a maid -.-. When I go to mall waitresses in stores would treat me rudely as if I would shoplift in their stores. I am sick of it but I won't ever change my skin.

My terrible experience in Indonesia shattered me world view. Call me naive, call me silly (back then) but I truly had no idea that we were seen in such a negative light until Indonesia. They're HORRIBLY ignorant and insecure people and worse, they project that ignorance on visitors! I was a visitor. We saved our money to go there. We spent money there. I was pointed and laughed at by both adults and children. It shattered my world view. But you know what, I picked up the pieces and rebuilt my confidence. No one can make me feel that low ever again. you got a beautiful smile leslie. btw, i called them "silly/plain people" dear good lady, they might laughing,pointing or talk behind you. but its mostly because theyve never saw foreign people. i know because im indonesian myself, most of them feel proud when they tried to "communicate" with foreign people (in any way they could). all you have to do in that situation is : just smile, wave your hand, and say something in bahasa like "permisi, hai, selamat pagi/siang etc"..and you will see the truth. just ask another expat in indonesia (sorry about my broken english)

Dont worry about it, black people often remind people of East Indonesians.. Black Indonesians were actually the native population of the country and they still live as the main population group in East Indonesia.. Ambon, Maluku Province as well as Papua. The whitewashing in society comes mainly from Colonial days when Dutch rule implemented apartheid ish culture in East Indies.

Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Korean, Vietnam, China, etc, all are influenced by Japan which is in turn influenced by USA and Europe, so the Whitening is real. The shame is that if there were no whitening products in those countries most of the people in them would be very brown skin so there's a lot of self hate going on like in the old slave days of the USA. I know they even wear hats and umbrellas before they go out into the sun which makes me laugh, because they try to appear White while the countries they are trying so hard to emulate want to be...dark. Tanning booths, oils, lotions are a huge US and European business. It's funny because a lot of the White men that go there want Brown women, not White ones so the whiter they get, the less attractive to White men they are, which they don't seem to realize.

The best thing is just to be proud of yourself and to be proud of who you are. I am proud of my skin colour as it can alternate. If I live in a cold country like UK, my skin goes lighter on its own and people will think I'm Chinese, which I'm not obviously. But if I live in a hot country like Indonesia, my skin goes back to being tanned, a/k/a I will see the real me being an Indonesian.

It has nothing to do with Japan or the western culture. It has everything to do with the perceive of wealth. Historically, darker skin means you are working hard under the sun, which means you are poor. While pale skin is perceived you are working safely indoor or your family is rich enough that you don't need to work. So, it's a class issue that still continue until now in Asian countries. It used to be the same in Europe (the more pale you are, the richer hence the more beautiful). But in Europe it has changed as now you are considered rich if you can go travelling to tropical countries, hence having tanned skin is considered beautiful by Europeans.

Hi! Thank you for watching this video and listening to my perspective at the time :) Even during job searches, I have faced racism with some employers in different countries. Some of the job posts for China say, "caucasian only". There is still this type of ignorance in 2016; I was shocked to stumble upon it. In the Child Education arena, shouldn't employers be primarily interested in the teacher's philosophies and genuine interest in the positive development of the child's character? Therefore, shouldn't it be top of mind to diversify the environment in which they learn? Lastly, I am optimistic about the direction in which our future is heading. I believe that some people are becoming more open-minded, accepting and not so fast to put others inside of a 'box'! :D

Hi, i'm Indonesian..so sorry if you feel not comfortable in indonesia. Maybe what you analise now is more about "the mode" around indo people or in the whole world..hair,skin,body shape etc. Because as i remember on 80's-90's everybody in Indonesia really comfortable of their dark skin and they make their hair also more wavy. Now the hair mode more straight or layers also for skin they prever more bright and i think it just the mode factor on each time. I have dark colour skin and i have no issues. I even buy face powder 1 tone darker than my skin tone and guest what my friend react..they said i look so nice and natural with my make up. My hair straight and planning want to make it curly. Its about what people interest of something but its ok..some like white skin and some like dark skin what matter is how you represent yourself just like you say. If people staring at you it simply because not so many african american in here so we are courious with you, we also do the same thing when we see white people we stare at them..its not about racist at all. Smile a lot so they learn more about you then see how they react. By trying to understand better about other culture it helps you more to adapt and do not take everything so seriously..just relax and enjoy. I wish you all the best!

Hi I'm Indonesian and you know why we Indonesian love fair skin ?? its story back to Colonial Indonesia . Dutch the former colonist tend to classified people in Indonesia into 3 Class . the first class was White guy . Second class was Asian other than Native Indonesian like Arabs , Indian and Chinese . and the third or the lowest class was Native Indonesian . Because Indonesian skin especially Western one is quite flexible , they can change their skin to Yellow because they can jump to the Second class or First class citizen if they are lucky . and that culture still exist until today although Dutch or White guys are no longer here

If you get starred by others in Indonesia because you have darker skin tone, you should probably just ignore it. Most of the time they're just curious, because its rare for them to see darker skin foreigner. For Indonesian who never really know whats outside the country, foreigner = white/arab/indian type of face/skin. Its true that in Indonesia ppl just think the whiter the better, woman here are strugling to get as white as possible regardless the method which sometimes endangering their own health. I think thats stupid. But as an Indonesian male, my personal opinion that I think you're quite cute.

To put it bluntly, I am indonesian, my skin is a little bit darker than most of yellow-ish asian people, and we call it black already, and yeah we are racist, we really look at people's skin a lot, why??? cause the media made us that!!! advertisements everywhere about making your skin whiter, and whats wrong with my people is, they are looking up at east of asians people, like japanese, chinese, or south korean people, because why? cause Japan occupied our country 3 years before we got our independence day, and japanese and chinese culture was very involved in the early of our country. And then the problem of my people is they can get over this bad culture that has been built in our social norms. But listen, hey, please, its not all of people in indonesia think like that, its not all of us think that skin color matters. You really need to find the person who will think more open, cause yes I agree, almost everyone here is conservative. But again, not everyone, its just almost everyone. Thats why Indonesia is kinda stuck as a third world country, its really hard for us to step up our game in the international life. To me I hate those racist bullies in my country, they even said the N word to someone with darker skin, like wtf? you have darker skin but it doesn't mean you can say that randomly. Thats the saddest part of my people in here, we are still dumb, if you don't believe me, look at the most famous news about a toddler who smoked cigarette back then in sumatra island. There are a lot of people who don't get a proper education here, and they are easy to listen to television more or the media rather than finding the fact first. Again, why? we are dumb, I am ashamed of my people. Another reason why I am ashamed of my people is, If you look at the map of Indonesia, we have west of papua as one of our Islands. So based on that, there are more black native people living in there, but why you barely see a black people living in Jakarta? Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia, if you don't know. WHY? because even our governments since the beginning of this country, has never given a proper attention to the east of papua's people which is crazy. Our govt wants the gold, the mines and everything from there, but we never care about the people!! (Yeah FUCK OFF INDO"S GOVT) We build a lot of infrastructures in java island, sumatra, kalimantan, and sulawesi, but the govt doesn't really give a fuck about those east of papua. Its been like that since a long time. If the govt is acting like that towards them, then dont expect that much from us, but yeah we do nice, and we have less crime rates than the US. So you guys are safe to walk on the street alone here even in the midnight

That's so sad, I hate the racism in Indonesia. I am white and I get called beautiful there all the time 😂 it's really extrem there, but I know it's not real, they where just taught that white skin is pretty. And it's so sad, because the girls then start complaining about their "dark" skin and how bad it is. Even the 12 years old. And of course the beauty industry is encouraging this. But I get called fat too, and I am actually slim for European standards 😎

Of course!!! I absolutely adore Indonesia! The weather is perfect, (In general) the people are friendly and welcoming, the food is extraordinary, the transportation is great! I still dream about 'Batik Keris', my favorite clothing store there. I would love to get on a motorbike tomorrow for a ride to work. Indonesia changed my life, my entire perspective! I think I will make a video about the positive and negative things about the places that I've traveled. Thanks for the question!

I admire that you had the ovaries to get out of America, and check out another country. I was an Expat in Ethiopia for 3 years. Teaching over there. What an amazing experience! Basically Leslie, you have had a wake up call to what a negative impression England and lilly white Americans have done to the whole world. Trust me it is not just in Indonesia, its in so many many countries. Unfortunately, even in Africa. In China, In Mexico. I once had a Mexican girlfriend who was brown eyed, and black hair. who by the way, was very beautiful! But she told me, that she had a blood sister, who was blond hair and had blue eyes. She told me that she was exceptionally beautiful! Simply put, she believed her sister to be more beautiful, cause of her fairer skin and blue eyes and blond hair. I fo get the treatment.I see how they adore white guys and I am happy for them but I also see alot of abandoning of mixed babies.I feel sorry for them because alot of these guys don't help them.It does not cost alot of money and I wonder why would they abuse these girls.

Sadly, everybody wants whatever they don't have. In predominantly white countries, being tan is beautiful, that's why fake tan and tanning exists. In predominantly darker skinned Asian countries, being white is beautiful, that's why whitening exists. It's really just a marketing tool. As an Indonesian, I'm sorry for what you've experienced. I've actually seen a few black people where I used to live, though I've never seen direct racism.

Hi leslie I wonder how what you say applies to teaching in a university setting? I don't doubt what you are saying. I wonder have you had contact with creative or more progressively engaged nationals eg autism interventions, advocates for ecology, skilled practices lap swimming triathletes, or specialized healthcare professional using yoga or forms of kinesthetics? Finally if you would reply... under what conditions would you return? Thanks for the dialogue.

+Cam Oens Actually, all of that sounds very appealing. I am interested in more progressive and creative outlets for my teaching. Currently, I am writing children's books during my evenings but still teaching children full time during the day. I would really like to combine the two by experimenting with self-worth workshops in my classes.

+Leslie Wheeler If I do take the position I will keep your experience in mind. I suspect at some point having SKILLS transformative for the people there wins out??? Over the vanity in life both there and in USA. Being singled out sucks. We are here for you. Life with other expats there might be of assistance . Social media is a resource. Again your task there might be to carve out a community there...perhaps with movers and shakers there. Just a thought!
