The video weaves excellent combat footage with interviews and comments made during the war. Includes footage of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in Vietnam and Thailand. The video also addresses racial issues African Americans faced while in-country.
Combat scenes of African Americans fighting at Fire Support Base Ripcord, Operation MacArthur, Con Thien, Dak To, Battle for Hue City, Operation Buffalo, Siege at Khe Sanh, TET 1968 (attack on Tan Son Nhut Air Base) and more. Includes on camera interviews shot in-country with African American soldiers, Marines and airmen. Video includes a "rap session," filmed at Long Binh in 1971, with white and black soldiers discussing racial problems on the base. There is a segment devoted to the lack of Soul Music on the bases in Vietnam. Video also includes remarks made by Air Force General Daniel "Chappie" James Jr.

@Terry Bruce you obviously were not African American post WWII. Do you even know anything to dare and tell someone to not make issues with being treated unfairly after serving and many cases giving your life only to come back home not given a chance to enjoy the same rights white veterans enjoyed and were able to better their own lives and those of their families. Let me fill you in on some factual history that our school books happen to leave out. Have you heard of the GI Montgomery Bill? That allowed white veterans get guaranteed mortgages to buy homes to raise their families, or allowed white veterans to attend vocational free of charge, or allowed white veterans to attend Universities free of charge while paying them to attend school. Things that help people move up that social economical ladder were all denied to African Americans. Not including to still having to deal with jim crow laws upon their return. So please stop trying to tell me to not make issues when they clearly existed. www.history.com/news/gi-bill-black-wwii-veterans-benefits#:~:text=How%20the%20GI%20Bill%27s%20Promise%20Was%20Denied%20to,GI%20Bill%20and%20the%20Racial%20Wealth%20Gap.%20

I had 1 uncle who served 2 tours in Vietnam. My brothers nor I have ever heard a single war story, heck we don't even know what unit he served with or what years he served, as it was topic that never came up. The only thing my mom mentioned was that when he returned after his second tour, he had developed a severe drinking problem and that he couldn't stand the sound of children crying. Sadly, he passed away in 2009, but I wish I knew more about his experiences over there.

I am an African American Airline Pilot. When i came out of the U.S Airforce in January 1990. I looked around & realized we are the only race without our own Airline transportation back to where we come from, the Beautiful Contenant of Africa? I immediately filed an application, received secured financial backing & four years later with help & higher (Complaint with HQ.) intervention was approved to hold a U.S Air Carrier Certificate to operate a U.S Airline. The issuing agency was furious, because they never issued An Air Carrier Certificate to a Black ownd and operated company before in the U.S.A They immediately set out to destroy my life with false charges against me.(If we cannot stop you professionaly? We will distroy you personally) They charged me with three C.F.R 67.403 (A)(1) Administrative Actions, which means DUI/DWI. They accused me of committing fraud for not reporting their fraud against me? I have never drink a beer or had a traffic stop for the likes in my life? It has taken years to clear. Once they realize i will fight for my rights, everyone involved walked away & would not touch my case. Finally after 16 year's as i am posting, i get my case in U.S. District Court in Washington DC. What i have come to realize in America is their are over 180k Airline Pilots. The industry is 98% White male? While Black people are 14% of the U.S population? We should be 26,000 of the 180,000? Instead we are only 800? In 1947 we had 942 Black Pilots? Called the Tuskegee Airman of which not even one them got a job with a US Airline? Just to give a little insight on what we are really dealing with? I want this truth be public because the closest entry points between Africa & America is Cape Verde Islands & The U.S Virgin Islands (2,700 miles apart) in the Atlantic? A short flight but Black people think we are worlds away when we are closer then we think. State of Texas in America is larger than every country in Europe? Every country in Europe has its own Airline? If we are repatriating back to Africa and we are not flying ourselves imagine the millions & billions we are losing.

I heard a story once of 2 soldiers from my hometown here in Arkansas. These 2 soldiers 1 white and the other black didn't know each before Vietnam. But ended up in the same squad, became friends and during a firefight the white soldier went down and the black soldier went to save him. They both died that day. At home they probably wouldn't have been friends because of the times they lived. But to overcome all that to sacrifice one's own life to try and save his buddy. Friendship doesn't see a skin tone

My dad served in Vietnam. One of the few Black Men in FMF at teh time. My dad would tell me bits & pieces of stories about racism in that campaign. He never realy spoke about it. Hell, when he went from NCO to Warrant to Officer, he experienced a LOT of racism in the U.S Marine Corps. Still there to this day. Same game, different faces. I wound up serving with Marines myself, and I can VOUCHE for the racism. This is why this country's military will NEVER advance nor grow to its FULL potential. Racism is ALIVE and WELL not opnly in the military complex, but in the private, federal state, and city sectors as well. I cold go further, but I think you all get teh picture. We never lynched a white man or any man, but they STILL lynch us. Only onw they lynch us through the internet, demonizing, emsaculating, and brain-washing the masses into our destruction. but now worries though, I beleive that when the day of judgement comes, White people will have a LOT to answer for, and I also beleive that 999 out of every 1000 will be in hell as fuel.

+ISubmitto TheWillofGod Not as many white people are as crazy as may you think. There was always the hard core haters that will have a real problem in that day, along with some hard headed black people. There has always been many white people with the ability to see some of the wrongs done. That's why slavery, Jim Crow, among other things, ended. I was there - Da Nang, Pleiku, An Khe, Phu Cat, and, so forth. Even Kicked a clansman out of my room. I was able to save lives of three unknowns, some were probably white guys, and I was very glad to do so. One of my best friends there was a white guy named Mike Caine. And yes I was able to save the lives of possibly 10 black brothers, and at least one little Hispanic fellow, while I was there. Repentance is coming to many, but the spanking comes first. You are right about the deep rooted racism, but God is going to eliminate it, and those who don't want to give it up will go with it!

Like i said they never shoulda been there in the first place & what did the U.S gain from intervening?? Not a damn thing but trillions of dollars pumped into the military industrial complex & millions of innocent lives lost Oh & by the way go read up on the history of French Indochina & Vietnam while you're at it fool!!

@@MykeFord950 Damn fool, let me guess, the US also fought in Korea to make it a colony, rape people, kill babies and starve it of its resources. Are you also telling me North Korea should have won? The north korean are totally fighting US imperialism, right commie? The US wouldn't have given a fuck about Vietnam if there wasn't some crook named ho chi minh who was sponsored by stalin and mao tse sung to spread communism and build soviet military bases. If the US "won" in Vietnam there would be no Cambodian genocide, no Hmong genocide, no concentration camps, no vietnamese boat people and no authoritarian governments in Vietnam, Cambodia, Lao. You tell me, were the korean and vietnam wars rich man's wars? If they were, those rich men must really hate genocides, concentration camps, commies. Damn i wonder how the south koreans are doing, being a colony of the US and being ruled by US imperialists, sucks to be them.

My father related a story from ww2,where he spoke about the germany so called enemies had better accommodation than the black soldiers. So when I hear about race relations,The country is responsible for all the disparities in this country, I served in vietnam in 1968 as a medic downrange, came home to be denied service in a fast food joint while in uniform. The overall attitude of this country remains. There all the bullshit about brothers in arms. Its the behaviors and actions that says who you are.

Terry Bruce I think he was referencing to the movie da five bloods, also that was said by a Vietnamese woman on the radio and she's definitely right, the reason she's right is because first off take in to consideration this was a different time a harsher time where black soldiers were being mistreated and discriminated against even though they were fighting for America, they were mistreated by the ones they were fighting for. So he's absolutely right we weren't always treated like Americans. Even now racist things happen but it's gotten a lot better for us. So the phrase "not you war" is basically saying like why fight for the people who are mean to you and mistreat you. I heard a story about a guy during ww1 or ww2 (I forgot) note that there was still segregation back then and a black man had came back from war and still couldn't go to a "whites only" restaurant but he looked in and saw a German which I find pretty interesting being that back then America was fighting the Germans and even during ww1 there was still segregation in the military units even though we were on the same side, your side :/ but still blacks weren't allowed to fight amongst whites look up these group of dudes called the Harlem hell fighters badass guys despite dealing with discrimination they still fought for America they actually earned that name by the Germans cause of how they fought :)🤘🏿 also that's why Muhammad Ali wouldn't join the military and go to Vietnam (the reasons I mentioned earlier) he said "Why should I go fight them? They've never called me nigger they've never mistreated me." Also they would give black soldiers tougher missions I would recommend watching the movie Da Five Bloods it's pretty good. anywho there's been a lot of messed up stuff done to us but that's okay we forgive everyone :) it's all love man! let's not let the pass separate us, let's be family :)💜 and get to know one another and be kind to each other this life is too short to be all separated from each other and be mean to each other 👍🏿🤘🏿😌💜😊 God made us all different so that we could get to know one another bro 👍🏿 (I'm a black guy haha) I hope I wasn't offensive towards you bro if I was I apologize

I respect the service of veterans of any race or ethnicity; social constructs don't define the men who valiantly sacrificed their lives, or in the case of survivors, the mental, emotional, and physical disabilities that will forever change their lives. The men in my family served in the military; I had two cousins who served in Vietnam. The Vietnam War resonates with me because I grew up with it and the music of the era. But damn, somebody should have sent the brothers some soul music. Brothers wanted to hear some Smokey, Temptations, James Brown, Impressions, Supremes, Marvelettes, -- essentially all of the iconic soul music of the 60's.

How well I remembered this unnecessary war.So many of my family members were drafted, of whom were black. They were the majority of who served there and most had just graduated from school. Most young white men were college students, which gave them leniency and of course their family doctors who lied about their diagnosis and there were many of them who left the country to avoid going to vietnam. It seemed every other day you would see coffins of our deceased soldiers rolling of the planes. The young folks on college campuses all over, protested against the war and at times there were very violent episodes from the authorities. Finally, the war ended with hundreds and hundreds of our young men who came home in coffins, and who were crippled, maimed, paralyzed and with mental and emotional problems.Sadly, there was no heroes welcome for them. They weren't honorable recognized as brave Americans who fought for their country at that time. They were ridiculed by america because news reports said they went into villages and deliberately killed innocent women and children. Finally,March 28,2017,Pres Trump made that day a National Vietnam Day for those veterans and their families who sacrificed for us.

At the time, he thought it would be better then moving somewhere else in the states so that his family didn’t have to experience the violence that was being directed at the black community in the states b/c of the civil rights movement, which it was but only somewhat better. My dad told me that on vacation, even though they were in Europe, there were towns and villages that they couldn’t enter or get service in specifically b/c they were black.

You know I don't consider myself an sjw or black lives matter person (I like to say I believe in equality without necessarily conforming to a group) I still have to say that what black people went through during the 60s and 70s was screwed up. they didn't have civil rights in their own country and still the men were forced out onto the front lines to fight a war that a lot of people didn't want to fight. I support black veterans as well as white veterans and veterans of every other ethnicity because no matter what race you are its still screwed up that American politicians forced men to fight a war that not a lot of people wanted to fight so that rhe politicians can push their agendas.

Seems that certain folk feel black troops don't have the courage to fight yet they are sent to war and the whites that fight with them gain each others respect, but they have to come back to a country where a little ole white lady in the bank pulls her purse close or some asshole refuses service. It won't end util all these folk die out and the newer ones get better exposure to each other as a group instead of living in isolated places and watching stuff on TV and listening to Faux News

Elected in 1912, President Woodrow Wilson ordered segregation throughout the federal government.[64] In World War I, blacks served in the United States Armed Forces in segregated units. Black soldiers were often poorly trained and equipped, and were often put on the frontlines in suicide missions. The U.S. military was still heavily segregated in World War II. In addition, no African-American would receive the Medal of Honor during the war, and black soldiers had to sometimes give up their seats in trains to the Nazi prisoners of war.[65] I couldn’t see why any black man would’ve fought for this country back then🤦🏽‍♂️
