I love so many songs, genres of music and heard so much in my 68 years, yet this song ranks right up there in my top favorites of all time. What a dreamy song. The lyrics, their silky voices, and the background instruments. Perfection.

The Flamingos were one of the early 50's doo-wop groups. They were known for their great harmonies & choreography moves. They influenced other acts such as The Temptations later on. "I Only Have Eyes For You" is their biggest hit but they had quite a few good songs "If I Can't Have You", "That's My Desire", "Golden Teardrops", "I'll Be Home", "Lovers Never Say Goodbye" etc.

"I Only Have Eyes For You" was written back in the 1930's for a Busby Berkeley film starring Dick Powell, who later starred in several classic film-noir movies including Murder, My Sweet (1944) and Pitfall (1948). The Flamingos released their version of the song in 1959, It came to define doo-wop balladry with the clarity of its lead vocals, its memorable "sh-bop, sh-bop" backing refrains over lush reverb laden guitar strums, pianissimo driven rhythms, and softly brushed drums. For some more "lush" balladry from the 1950's, check out The Platters "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and Johnny Mathis "Chances Are".
