I started to be intrigued by their diversity some time ago so I have to thank you for making this video about them, maybe the only truly detailed one on youtube

I've been in the fish hobby for 3 years and keep alot of fish including cichlids. This is hands down the best educational fish video I have ever seen. And really one of my favorite youtube videos I've seen. So well done. I would love for more fish species like this

I personally kept African cichlids myself for about 7 or 8 years, so I made the video I wanted to see. Not sure I have enough knowledge about other groups of fish to make a video this in-depth. But I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

15:29 the female is actually a young yellow lab cichlid, although the female of the species is yellow, the photo is from an incorrect source. I’ve kept these cichlids before, it’s neat since they are all yellow as juveniles. Nonetheless the picture gets the point across and the video summarizes the cichlids of the rift valley lakes pretty damn well. Great job!

I used to keep cichlids and loved them. I’d love a video on the different synodontis species.

I have a large tank with Malawi cichlids. Never boring. All three types are together and there is never a problem. The largest I have will grow up to 40 cm. The Fossorochromis rostratus. The Malawi cichlids are notorious for their aggression. But fights almost never occur in my tank. All are docile and have their own territory. It is not overcrowded at all (I keep 30 fish in 800 liters, 2 meter tank). And yes, I have males and females. They swap partners every now and then though. Which also happens in the wild. There are more hybrids than you think in the wild. The OB is, by the way, one that also exists in the wild. Not seen a lot, but they are there. And the best part of Lake Malawi is that it is salty and does have plants (although not a lot). Malawi cichlids are happy when you add a little salt (without iodine) in the tank. Also, take a look at the amazing Synodontis njassae. The only Synodontis that lives in Lake Malawi. The reason why the Metriaclima melissa (used to be Pseudotropheus elongatus chewere) loses its color is because of the lack of natural algae. Somehow this fish needs the color of the food he eats (like more species of animals do).

Okay i know this is a 9 month old video but someone has to explain this to me: at 9:43 this fish is named haplochronis sp no 44... how does that happen? Did they just happen to not come up with a name for this one or is this an undescribed species? And why are there at least 43 more? Hahah would love an explanation

The particular variations are specific to location There being "reefs" and rock formations in the lakes causes the local species to be a definitive variant
