The coronavirus situation actually ended my trip earlier than expected, as I was there in March 2020. I am not sure what the status is now, but from the families I have kept in contact with they are being vaccinated 🙏

So why they don't allow Ghanaians to volunteer in some of this places in Ghana????am I missing something here
@kirstenrincon

I’m not sure that is true? If it is, I didn’t know that. Why wouldn’t they be allowed to help their own community?

@@kirstenrincon am a Ghanaian and I tried to volunteer sometime back but they never let.they kept saying they will get back to me when it's time to volunteer but I later found out that you have to pay some money or fees as a volunteer which locals here can't afford...some of the volunteer organizations might see this as a money making opportunity...I might be wrong but I just don't know why they wouldn't allow locals to volunteer since there:are many unemployed people here....but was there any local who volunteered with you guys?
@kirstenrincon

@@basketballgh No there weren't any local volunteers, but the organization founder was a local. But yes, we did have to pay volunteer fees in order to participate. They should waive that fee for locals since they won't need room & board and will just be volunteering their time. Doesn't make sense for them not to allow you to volunteer.

@@kirstenrincon that's the reality.its all for the money I guess .greed at it's highest..kindly do a little research on your own and make a video to advice your fellow westerners cus it's only few people who seem to be making money off volunteering and I doubt if the local places you volunteer at even gets a jingle of the fees you guys pay.

@@kirstenrincon I might be wrong but a little research could enlighten everybody and a process in which locals can participate to serve our country

A local would have done a better job. These types of volunteer opportunities are solely for the benefit of the “privileged westerners” and don’t help the actual locals at all. The people who are organizing these events are making a fortune of “bored” westerners like us who want an experience and the actual locals in need do not benefit at all. It actually harms the communities. I humbly advise you to do more research and not fall into this trap. Hopefully some of the profit from the fees you paid actually go to the development of the communities and not just into the pockets of the ones trying to make money. But I know deep down you do want to help so definitely research better ways to help 😅.

You talked about unpaved roads and how rural those places can be. I think i would have to explain this to you here. Land in Ghana is owned by the chiefs and their sub chiefs. These greedy chiefs (yes i called them them that), sell lands indiscriminately and wantonly. They could, for a buck,sell lands on water courses too. They don't plan out communities, provide basic infrastructure before selling out lands. This means gorvement would always be playing catch up in providing those basic infrastructure like roads, water and electricity. This loophole-i call it-makes communities like abokobi and others perpetually look underveloped.I wish all lands were taken away from these greedy chiefs and given to the state. However that would loose any political party an election, so the cycle would continue.

Very interesting, I wish that were not the case. It is truly sad how corrupt most governments are to the detriment of their own people 😔

You raise a valid point but not all chiefs are greedy. Also if you are Ghanaian you should also know that the Chiefs do not have the funds to develop their communities and often rely on the government too. So it is a 2 way street here. No one can actually take the full blame although I will blame the government more.
