I chew PEPCID AC MAX (famotidine 20mg) 1 hr before playing with bees and I no longer have the cytokine swelling. It is an ABSOLUTE blessing! Bee stings don’t hurt anymore. Please let others know.

It's a great introduction to Africanized bee! It would be great to have more research on relationship Africanized bee and Varroa mites. Thanks a lot!

Brazil probably has more research on this, they've been beekeeping them for decades

The last couple of colonies I had inspected (2007) were tested to to be 39%afracanized genetically. They just act like Italian bees, to me

So...here, the sun set about half an hour ago and I was checking on a hive which looks a bit stuffed with bees. It's dark, and I wasn't wearing any gear and I was making a split while wearing a head lamp. .... I was listening to this talk about killer bees killing livestock and pissed off behavior. Talk about a spooky session of beekeeping! My bees are feral to boot (in Texas). This would have been a great party trick for Halloween, but with real stings!

They are a highly intelligent species of bees: at the top of the insect game

I feel like just because theses beee have evolved to be able to demand more respect doesn’t mean we shouldn’t use them it just means we need to keep them more isolated from people

Phil Chandler did a test with bananas to see if the bees were stimulated by the alarm oils. He found that his bees hardly reacted at all. Could it be that some gentle bees don't really respond at all to alarm pheromones? What happens if you take banana peels wrapped in a black piece of knit cloth,then bring it near the hive entrance and move it away to draw off the guard bees? Top bars as in the Kenyan hive are a useful strategy to minimize disturbance. A good example of a commercial application is the Jackson Horizontal HIve.

@12:49 she quotes that the expansion of AHB was 300 to 500 km per year. I would like to now how you would adjust that figure for areas with cold winters? Or what is the expansion rate into areas with cold winters? What is the limit to how far north the AHB (and their genes) will go? Thanks.

They've probably reached their limit already or close to it. Maybe Oregon or southern washington in the west and in the earth even less, maybe south carolina

What about the Africanized bees of Puerto Rico? They have become relatively tame could we not Cross the former killer bee's of Puerto Rico with the Africanized killers of today here on the mainland?
@scipio2009
@scipio2009 3 жыл бұрын
Puerto Rico has forage all year round, from the video I saw. That basically created the disincentive for developing guard bees instead of forage bees. That isn't the case everywhere, so it's not inherently true that simply moving PR bees (or PR drones/queens) would be enough to replicate what happened in PR.

@@helenscott8202 research is key and we have to look at the Africanized 🐝 bees of Puerto Rico that are becoming and in most cases already have became relatively tame. This should be studied for further knowledge and possibly for profitable beekeeping

Marvin Montgomery I am a retired engineer who utterly believes in research. You are preaching to the choir. I was fascinated about what you had to say on the Africanized bees in Puerto Rico. Excellent presentation. People who don’t listen, cannot hear.

I hate these bees. Now, what this woman doesn't seem to know anything about, is recent events of hive swarms, seeming to bring the small hive beatle along. They swarm with the bees. Not knowing how the miserable african bee deals with varroa mites, tells me this bee is so dangerous, and little honey production, the value seems low. I was hoping the varroa mite would really take it away.

You don't know what you are taking about. Africanized and African bees are not the same. Africanized is an hybrid.
