Beehind : If students don't get the 'fertilization' thing - show them your Beehind picture : it's when Bees show their beehind to 'flowers' that fertilization may occure ;)

I don't see how a brood break will help by splitting after main flow when Varroa is Peaking, and never even got knocked down any thru whole season, this method will get u alot of overwhelmed bees with Viruses and high winter loss..The Feral bees aren't beating Varroa by brood breaks,as much as they are "Leaving Mites" Behind...I'm all for the continued work, but has to be a better way .....in my experience from splitting yearly ,brood breaks aren't enough, their kinda a joke, soon as brood hatches they got high mite loads starting all over again, countering the brood breaks..I just think we are ALL trying what's been done over and over ,we need a new plan

Interesting that she says that APIs mellifera meliffera were the first bees imported into the u.s.a...i always thought it was Italians... I wonder if it's because the APIs mellifera need less feed and more suited for transport.

Unfortunately she is incorrect about loss rates in USA...nationally we lost between 40%-60% for 2014-2015...Maryland lost 60% of all managed colonies. That is NOT commercial operations, these are hobby beekeepers. I do like that someone within the American beekeeping establishment is FINALLY talking about treatment-free beekeeping. The conventional beekeeping establishment has been an abysmal failure with constant chemical interventions and artificial diets. Sadly our loss rates in the US are going to be extremely high this season for commercial and hobby beekeepers.

It really is the only way to get over this, breeding, breed your survivors, we need to let the bees get over it. We let the week ones die and let the strong produce. We have losses at first for couple years but once we get the stock we want our losses are less then treated. The problem is convincing people who make a living off bees to take the up front horrible losses. It's hard and I dont blame them. But until then the bees wont get over it on a global scale.

Superficial. We don't really need to know from juniors on the subject of beekeeping. The real knowledge comes from experienced beekeepers.
