Africans have so much to lose if we screw up the opportunity to live in a first world country and support our families from where we are. It's the same for Asians and any other third world citizen, the pressure on the oldest kids in the family to keep everyone else in he household afloat is extremely high because we understand that they depend on us to survive. Side note, culturally, family is the most important thing to us which is why we just can't conceptualize individualism(a western cultural thing). We will literally do anything for our families.

True, I think he means it's not solely a matter of mindset, he also mentioned the fact that Black Americans were redlined by banks in the United States. This is a very important point that shouldn't be overlooked. There's an interview where Muhammad Ali talks about how, after winning the gold medal in the Olympics, he wanted to go eat but was refused service at a burger spot in Louisville, Kentucky, because he was Black. However, there was a group of Africans wearing their traditional garments who were let in because they were not considered black but rather African. This example illustrates that Black Americans were not always treated the same as Black immigrants. My mom is from Louisville and she tells me stories about during Jim Crow's era like that all of the time. That burger spot is still there after all of these years of rejecting black Americans in the area, by the way.

It's wild how these immigrants love to generalize all blk Americans because they landed in a low income neighborhood. If I were to migrate to an African or Carribean country and speak down on the locals: "they complain too much", "too many excuses", "they don't try hard enough" I'd be seen as short sighted and ignorant. Where do they find the audacity? Also, are you not aware of the multiple HBCU's founded by blk Americans? The thousands of inventions? Civil Rights? We've never reached any kind of success in this country? No middle class and upper middle class blk neighborhoods? Really? Before migrating and reaping the rewards of my ancestors sacrifices, do some research. Educate yourself. Google is free.

As a second-generation Nigerian immigrant, what he is saying is right but also wrong in some ways. He said they might as well be white, which is a little racist as he is basically saying that African Americans are lazy and have terrible families, but I come from a family that was extremely wealthy in Nigeria, and we have a lot of connections to the point where my parents didn’t even want to move to America and planned to be there for a short time but just decided to stay and become citizens. A lot of African immigrants who came to America are wealthy in Africa in some way, as those who aren’t wouldn’t have the resources to get to America and may immigrate to a country illegally that isn't as hard to illegally do as Greece, which was a popular spot around the time my parents moved to America. Now it’s obviously not impossible to get to America from Africa if you are poor, but you basically have to be so lucky that winning the lottery for millions is more likely, and it will likely never be illegal as that is almost impossible to do. The only reason Africans left is because of the wars and terrible governments that are plaguing Africa, and they don’t want to raise their children in those environments. Immigrant parents are naturally pretty demanding of their children for them to be successful, but Africans just want to see results and success. Having African parents sort of forces you to be successful in the way we are raised... I have never heard someone say that we are closer to white people, though. Anyway, I hope you guys are a little less ignorant now.

that part ! him comparing us to white people really annoyed me. and you’re the first one i see talking about it 🙌🏽 i wanted to add my grain of salt but it’s important to remember that the conversation is centered around the us. as an afro-european who lives in a socialist country, my experience is different. a country that people seem to bring up a lot is nigeria (even though africa is diverse lol). people need to know that there is a immigration pattern. colonization is a factor to many african diasporas. people tend to immigrate to their ex colonizer. that would be the uk for nigerians, france for senegalese people etc. but yeah the typical destinations are western europe or america. as u said people who tend to migrate to the us are generally well off (according to the living standards of their respective country) but it’s not always the case. plus many people are tempted by the « american dream » or they see the west as an opportunity to succeed in life! anyways the comparison to whites was kinda brave. im assuming he is referring to demographical stats but still.. he’s just generalizing. i still think that yt ppl are the most privileged in the western society, BUT not every white person is wealthy.. this conversation is all based on generalizing anyway

Nah it's a culture difference and mindset. My broke ass parents came here from a hut in Africa and couldn't speak English but they beat our asses everyday to get good grades and work hard and avoid bad crowds. We started off in one of the worst communities and now we're in one of the best. We are more hardworking and driven . Both my parents worked 2 jobs and i started working at 16. We had goals and understood what it would take for us to get it. Hardwork not crying about the difficulties of our lives. Yes. Yes. Yes.

@@rlroark2457 hey hello, I’m an African. I see ur question as genuine so i will answer genuinely and i will only speak for Nigeria as i am Nigerian and i have grown up there. Nigeria (and most systems in Africa tbh) are corrupt to its very core. They are rotten. And if i am going to be an honest person both the people and the government are to blame, more so the government though. They are cruel. This is not representative of every nigerians perspective its just mine. The next question naturally is “Why did we pick these leaders in the first place?” Good question, we did not. They put themselves there because of how influential and wealthy theyve become from our own resources. Fraud, money embezzlement, tax evasions you name every form of corruption under the sun, our leaders have done it better than the average human being. And there isnt any consequences for their actions cuz almost all forms of authority are in on it. Including the authorities responsible for taking these people to jail. You see, trying to make the system better is like trying to count each and every grain of sand our planet. Technically its doable but if we are going to be honest, would you really count each grain of sand in this world? You will be what? exhausted. See where I’m going? Everyone in my country has exhausted all their drive on trying to make the country better but our so called “leaders”make it a living hell for many of us. So much so that our drive rn is to leave the country and find hope somewhere else. Some people in africa have that drive to make the country better and they are blessed for that, but their efforts unfortunately will be in vain cuz theres always someone powerful that doesn’t want that change because of the benefits they get from being corrupt. Try to make a change? Suddenly, you were in a car crash or funny enough you become like one of them. Corrupt and rotten. The drive for most is dead. We are tired of fighting, we are exhausted and we want peace of mind. Hence we move to other favourable countries that allow us to grow.

A lot of those kids where very educated and had a very strong work ethic because they grew up privileged and also seen some of the worlds worst poverty. They're families back home where usually rich government officials or successful businessmen and sent them off to america to get educated. Out of desperation to not fail there families and not have the same fate as there lower classes, they work there asses off. They always tell me stories about how they lived in luxury and was highly respected. They also told me stories that just a few blocks away they'll see beggars, starvation, poor housing. It's like a constant reminder not to fail and keep there wealth by any means. Those kids had way more pressure on them because there families back home was relying on their success. The only people that are able to immigrate to the US are those that were able to overcome the material conditions necessary to do so. All of those that couldn't do that, obviously don't immigrate to the US. It's a self-selecting sample that's disproportionately exceptional people. Most people are not exceptional, by definition. Yet, a body of people that are normally distributed are being compared to a subset of exceptional people from a different group from another region. And when the normal distribution is out-performed, people accuse the normally distributed group of having an exceptionally poor "mindset".
